CONTAINMENT (photomorph) & MONKEY MIND (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

MONKEY MIND*

like a dark thought
the crow swoops across
my line of sight, disrupting
my concentration on the elderly
eye candy of a man biking by:
isn't that just like monkey
mind to abscond with
the sweets of the here
and now before one
even catches a
brief taste

[non-dream free verse poem written 1-13-17. *Monkey mind = a Buddhist term, put simply, meaning "uncontrollable." Photomorph "Containment" (1-14-17 006v3) by Roswila]

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

ALL KNOTTED UP (photomorph) & THE DOOR (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

THE DOOR

she wishes for insight and suddenly
sees before her, hanging in the air
like an X-ray film, a vision of her entire
skeleton, all in shades of blue

every emotional and physical pain she's
ever felt and still suffers reflected
in some dark blue knot or twist or
tortuously stretched length of shadow
along a bone

and each vaguely spherical joint where
a transition's made from one length of her
skeleton to another, shining a wan blue,
like sephira on a monochrome
Tree of Life*

she stands there, acutely feeling each ache
inside herself that's mapped in the air in
front of her, wondering if she could
at least change the color of it all

even for a brief while, maybe to a
joyous soul freeing golden yellow, or
a passionately fulfilling flaming red

she's long given up on any belief
in transformation

but momentary surcease of bone deep
blues, like a door springing open on
a glorious, yearned for vista? that
might give her the strength to bear every
one of these knotted bones with grace
when the inevitable hurricane winds
of life slam the door shut again

[free verse poem on a dream of 1-12-17. *Tree of Life, very briefly put, an ancient Hebraic vertical map of how our souls progress; the sephira are where the various paths meet and are represented as globes. And each path and sephira has its particular qualities and tasks. Photomorph "All Knotted Up" (4-20-09 v4a) by Roswila]

NIGHT EXPOSURE (photomorph) & TWOFER (two mixed format dreams poems) by Roswila

TWOFER

One:

why I'm stark naked
to begin with, I don't know,
but despite an "ick"
factor, I put on a nightgown someone
forgot in this large public bathroom

I'd rather be covered right now than further
expose all that's going (and gone) south

Two:

Madonna arrives
with her usual high energy
hustle and bustle,
barely saying "hi" and going right to
reminding me of her play opening

a new one I'm in
that she wants to be quite sure
I'm prepared to do,
especially the arm movements:
a body builder's muscle display

I assure her that I've learned my lines
and rehearsed the strong arms posture

thinking, why am I doing another show,
I've never liked Madonna at all

yet I always go along with her,
she somehow fully engages me

odd to so dislike the very personality
who manages to keep me showing up

[a mix of tanka and two-liners on two dreams of 1-11-17. Yes, it's that Madonna in the second dream, the performer. And I really have never liked her, though in the early years, I did like some of her music. There's a lot in this "twofer." One thread between them is the body. Also the idea of covering up. In the first dream with a nightgown and in the second, by putting on a show (i.e., putting on a good face). I also associate the name Madonna to "mother," a rather loaded association. TRAWLING FOR STARS (photo) & AT THE HOUSE PARTY (dream narrative) by Roswila

AT THE HOUSE PARTY

the staff of the new talent agency throws a huge
house party to trawl for wannabe stars
to sign with them

I wander the rooms, an invisible, uninvited guest,
and quickly (given I can't be seen) discover it's all
a scam: the staff has no intent to even try to get jobs for
the wannabes who sign up, but are doing a great job of
faking it, with much noise and ballyhoo, and at the same
time covering the legal aspects with the disclaimer: "We
can't guaranty anything, except that we'll work harder
than any agency you can sign with."

I watch the CEO and founder of this phony agency
receive a very important call, and follow him to his
private office where he makes the now familiar sales
pitch, saying he had to get away from all the hustle
and bustle of business being done in order to even hear
himself think (of course, all of it fake noise and hustle,
to fake out the party attendees)

a youngish man who looks very worried, has also
followed the CEO and now knocks, and without waiting
for an answer enters the office; he quickly and very
anxiously asks for work, saying how hopeful all the
hoopla of the party sounds, especially given he's
desperate for work; the CEO gives the youngish man
his most impressive smile, saying, yes, we'll get on this
right away! and, of course, you will remember we
cannot guarantee anything

the youngish man leaves, a despondent slump to his
shoulders, he'd needed more than a speech and a disclaimer;
the CEO watches him exit (his cell phone still pressed
against his ear) and thinks that there goes a probable suicide;
and so the CEO closes the door and turns the music up very
loud, especially the bass line, so that he won't hear the gun
shot; why should he be concerned, he thinks, after all he
informed him up front that there's no guarantees

yes, I think, he and his cronies cover their legal asses, but what
about the mine field of their consciences? it's all too much like
a twisted re-writing of the Emperor's New Clothes:
there's nothing there even to disclaim

CIRCLING THE NIGHT (photomorph) & EVEN IF (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

EVEN IF

even if what I so desperately
want to be true actually is:
that you return my desire,
what good is this?

what use is a truth that finds
no expression, no concrete action?

such a truth is nothing more
than a ghost wandering the inner
realms, lonely and sad, coming
from nowhere and having
no place to go

I would rather not be so haunted
by a requited desire that never roosts,
like two birds circling each other
on aching wings, forever at a distance

MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING (photomorph) & COLORIZED (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

COLORIZED

most of the dream gets lost along the way,
peeled away from memory like muddy
clothing, leaving watery sludge smothering
recall in a thin translucent layer that
reveals the shapes beneath but not
how they got that way:

... she arrives at last at the gathering place
in the out-of-the-way corner of the city's park,
and to her deep surprise finds her father alone
there, and more surprising, that he's willing
to hear her out; and so she tells him how it's
felt never to have been invited to speak,
to have been effectively silenced by judgment,
itself silent but as impactful as some omni-
present neon color that makes her wince
(and worse) with its edgy vibration; and how
this new color, this pale, salmon sunset pink
that's now the trim for the all the building
facades and rooms, is a welcome change,
asking him if it's permanent or just another
teasing and quickly passing aberration,
emphasizing with fervent hand gestures
that she'd really like to know before she
follows it down another garden path, making
way too much of its hopeful beauty just
before it winks out, leaving her
feeling shamed again

WHAT GOES AROUND, COMES AROUND (photomorph) & "tree hollow ..." (non-dream haiku) by Roswila

tree hollow: bed of
fallen leaves turning to mulch
the New Year begins
