ONE BEAT OF THE DRUM (photomorph) & EMBEDDED IN THE NIGHT (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

EMBEDDED IN THE NIGHT

that smart ass nerd (really, genius smart)
sings his heart out ... a sad song about loss
and yearning, accompanying himself
on a very small (unusual for the type)
idiophone;* drawn to stand by him
I play along with my own even
smaller tongue drum; the warm
wooden voices of these mini-
drums like embryonic hearts
embedded in the night

[free verse poem on a dream of 5-26-17. * Idiophone (from wikipedia), the more accurate term than "drum" for slit and tongue drums, which were closest to what I saw in the dream. I kinda, sorta like the word "idiophone" also for its vague echoing of the word "idiot" (:-D). I "actually" heard and felt these drum beats, as has happened in some really old dreams about drums I recall having. Photomorph "One Beat of the Drum" (7-3-13 008v2c) by Roswila]

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

THE SHOUT OUT (photomorph) & SWEET RUCKUS (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

SWEET RUCKUS

birds raise a sweet ruckus of song
as I come closer to the bushes,
an attempt to distract this invader
from coming any nearer
to their hidden nests:

beauty struck from the golden bell
of the heart by danger

CROWDED SKY (photomorph) & DREAM IN WHICH I ACCEPT THAT I'M NOT THE ONLY ASS IN THE WORLD (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

DREAM IN WHICH I ACCEPT I'M NOT
THE ONLY ASS IN THE WORLD

I'm bare assed in a tiny bathroom with another ass
close by on my right; yeah, only that, a large human
butt standing somehow on its own; then I look to my left
and see an even larger, nay, humongous bare male ass
that fills what little space is left in this windowless
toilet cubbyhole; I laugh, thinking we're like a visual
homophone of the three bears in the Goldilocks tale,
and I'm the baby bear with her ass exposed (as always);
then again, what asses we must truly all be to have crowded
into this water closet together; but what's wrong anyway
with some light hearted competition (you know, like,
"Hey, I'm the biggest a-hole around these parts,
pardner...") and even some close supportive company
when times get rough as we go through life's
exposing and necessary eliminations

KEEPING SECRETS (photomorph) & THE LIVING CONNECTION (dream narrative) by Roswila

THE LIVING CONNECTION

the little dragon, carved from shiny dark
brown wood in an ancient Chinese style,
comes readily out of its hidden wall
holder when I stumble across it and reach
out in joy; I'm surprised and delighted
that the curators of this secret wall museum
are allowing me to touch and examine it
closely to my heart's content, running my
fingers over all its small artful curves
and crevices; when I finally manage to let
it go and put it carefully back in the hidden
shelter in the wall, I turn and look up right
into the black eyes of my temporary
roommate; he's standing in front of the huge
and elegantly carved dark wood étagère
that's been loaned to us; his eyes shine
with the knowledge that this set of open shelves
is as beautiful in its own way as the little dragon
he's just watched me caressing; then we learn
that we are being allowed to keep the capacious
étagère; I almost gasp out loud at the sharpness
of hope that rises as I think: what does this say
about this big, dark bear of a man and me?
is our living connection going to be
on-going as well?

LOVE LINES (photomorph) & HEAVEN FORFEND! (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

HEAVEN FORFEND!

it would be rather nice if they knew I'm actually
going to be taking over this job, that I'm already
slated for it despite my young age and just
being (at least in their opinions) a pretty face;
for it's lots of mostly repetitive work attempting
to be supportive, as I self-train for the head
position, and all while I deal tactfully with
the recurring sotto voce comment that it's
really none of my business (they should only
know how much our business overlaps ... but
they will, soon enough); the biggest challenge,
however, is to cope with that man, the one
closest to my own age who needs more care
and attention than anyone else, and runs away
faster and further, as if shame were always
lighting the fuse of a rocket in his back pocket
... but my work now is to learn what my new job
will require and that means caring where it's
required when a need crosses my path (even if
it rockets right away) and so I do this work in
the void of no acknowledgement, salted only
by a bit of gossipy backlash; maybe when
the time comes I'll actually be ready and able
to do my new job decently; after all, I'm not
looking to teach anyone anything, nor even
(heaven forfend!) to set an example:
I'm just trying to learn how to love

SEEKING LIFE ON THE WING (photo) & A STALK OF GRASS (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

A STALK OF GRASS

the long thin grass stalk I pull
to tie the wild flowers I've picked
into a gratitude bouquet for the ocean,
falls apart when I wind it around
the gathered blossom stems;
its wheat-like tufts breaking into
V-shaped seed-wings with tiny hooks
that attach tenaciously all over the lap
of my skirt: do they know something
I don't? hm, maybe they sense the last bit
of fertile ground yet left in this stubborn
old woman with her child-like streak

LOVE KNOT (photo) & WRITING AS AN EROTIC EXPERIENCE (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

WRITING AS AN EROTIC EXPERIENCE

sidewalk shadows of trees and cars and people's
leggy forms aren't any more visually compelling
than ever, nor is the wind's re-shaping of these
ephemeral patches demanding more than
a casual glance, yet they keep fingering
my attention like a shy new lover, raising
my level of interest to an uncomfortable
and pleasurable high, enough that I
simply must release that pen from its
zippered prison, grasp it firmly
in hand, and bring it to the empty page
