DOWN AT THE HEEL (photomorph) & UNDER THE SUN (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

UNDER THE SUN

she's fought to survive for 73 years but
the upshot is it's all too much; she can no
longer bear the leaden, gait twisting burden
of her past, stuck to her like gum as if she were
the sole of some old shoe that's picked up
everything crossing her path with an impossible
finality, no matter how she pulls and yanks
at it all; so much so that she does little else
these days but dream endlessly of scraping this
horrendously sticky past off, balling it up,
and throwing it over a cliff; but even this dream
of relief gives her a scary pause: who then would
she be without her past? without all these misshaping
and misshapen understandings and happenings
that wove her with their long twists, final cuts,
and knotted dead ends into this motley tapestry,
triggering the fervent wish to toss her torturous
past over a cliff edge; or, what if she's so stuck
to her past that she's completely unraveled when it
plummets over the edge, leaving nothing behind
at all? this tattered tapestry of self she mends
and patches and re-colors daily, trailing its
threadbare existence down through the empty air
stuck to her plummeting past; and yet, even on days
like these when everything under the sun clamors
of its own beauty, "leaving nothing behind"
sounds most beautiful of all

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

IN THE FOG'S EMBRACE (photo) & LOVE POEM (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

LOVE POEM

the tall, golden green, wild grasses
on the distant hillock bend gently
in the breezes; I yearn to stroke
them like the thorough wind,
the way I wish I could caress
you: brushing all the rises
and falls of your body,
the warm lay of your land

PROMISES, PROMISES (photo) & IT HURTS (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

IT HURTS

it hurts, doesn't it?
to be caught on your own
hook, to stand over there
at a great distance, sucking
on that little bleeding prick
like a baby it's thumb, a hurt you
never expected to get when
you oh-so-casually tossed out
that seductive lure
I all too readily snapped up

RIDING DOWN THE NIGHT (photomorph) & THE HIGH HORSE (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

THE HIGH HORSE

why am I getting up on
my high horse?
well, maybe because I feel
far safer up here,
out of reach

or would you prefer
that I crawl inside
this hollow ride
and rock my way boldly
into your world, only
to split open like that
wooden horse of myth,
spilling the danger
that's extruded
by unrelieved fear

NO WAY OUT (photo) & THE INCURSION (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

THE INCURSION

there he stands, all tall
and slim, his usual handsome
charming aged self,
yet I really don't want him moving
into my apartment, no way!

but the best I can
do, I figure, is put him off
'til July sometime,
that'll at least give me a few months
to get used to the inevitable

before I can tell
him this, he goes on happily
about how simple
it's going to be for him to bring all
his stuff over here by next Tuesday

yikes! that's only days away, and I know
my landlord won't buy my desire to delay

and so I accept what can't be changed
(dang that Serenity Prayer* for sneaking in)

I've wanted a man in my life,
if not in my actual living space

but here he is! I just wish I felt more
capable of handling this incursion

[a mix of tanka and two-liners on a dream of 3-20-17. *"God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change // Courage to change the things I can // And wisdom to know the difference." Photo "No Way Out" (12-31-10 10202e) by Roswila]

DANCE FOR END OF DAY (photomorph) & "waiting for twilight..." (non-dream haiku) by Roswila

waiting for twilight
gilded palm fronds unmoving
in a pale blue sky

[non-dream haiku written 3-19-17. Yay! The weather's warmed enough now that I can sometimes sit for a while after dinner in my favorite place: an outdoor balcony overlooking our community's pool. The palms inspiring this 'ku are two very tall ones at poolside. Photomorph "Dance for End of Day" (5-16-11 10977v3e) by Roswila]

MAY GRAY IN MARCH (photo) & NOTHINGNESS (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

NOTHINGNESS

no horizon on the sea today, just
a vast pillowing emptiness; one might
think that the possibility of sailing off into
nothingness would be more than welcome
after month upon month of sharp edges
delineating here from the yearned for but
unreachable; and yet sadness sinks any
brief relief at the sight of nothing, rolling
its wreck over and over on the busy
tongue of thought like the surf at high
tide with nowhere left to go: is this
distant nothingness anymore
attainable than the sky
beyond a horizon line?

[non-dream free verse poem written 3-14-17. Photo "May Gray in March" (3-14-17 017v2) by Roswila; May & June are famously foggy here on the CA Central Coast, but this was just taken a few days ago, and the poem was written that same day.]
