THE PERSISTENCE OF GREY (photomorph) & NOTHING LIKE (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

NOTHING LIKE

I angrily tell
the would be molester
that I need to pee
he reluctantly lets me go
I rush off to take a leak

I quickly slip on
a coat, planning to get as
far away from him
as possible -- now to find shoes
or slippers or even just socks

blast it all! those feral grey kittens
are nesting on my closet floor again!

(nothing like having kittens
about being p.o.'d, is there?)

[two tanka capped by two two-liners on a dream of 4-10-15. This dream was an answer to a question of my dream world before I fell asleep. I wanted to know more about my recent bout with surges of anger. (Kept to myself, but there nevertheless.) As soon as I recalled this dream I realized that I've been getting upset at myself for getting angry at all. And that this overlay is what's keeping me from dealing effectively with whatever is angering me to begin with. Which this dream does give me some very clear clues about. BTW, peeing in a dream for me (and other dream workers I've known) can represent anger -- as in being "pissed off." And there's that old expression "Don't have kittens," meaning calm down. BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO DREAMKU (& PHOTOS):

But first, a request: please let me know of any typos or other sorts of blunders in my posts. As my eyes age I'm finding more mistakes are creeping into what I put up here no matter how many times I proof it all. Thanks for any help!

The dream-based poems posted on this blog -- dreamku, tanka, two-liners, monoku, free verse, dream narratives -- are offered in the spirit of collaboration. I have done my part. Now it’s your turn to jump in and see what comes up for you. I.e., there is no right or wrong way to relate to any of these dream offerings. Even my own understandings of them change over time. And it gives me joy when a reader sees something in any of them that I have not. (This all applies to any of the non-dream poems posted here, too.)

Also please note that a dream poem or narrative is not intended as an interpretation of a dream, or even a complete and accurate rendering of one. It is my attempt to get down dream imagery/action that grabs me and, as I write about it, elicits my conscious written association and response. Nor do I believe that one has to remember dreams in order for them to do their work. In my understanding, we are much more than our conscious selves.

You may also note in any further reading on dreamku (the specific forms of dreamku, tanka, two-liners and monoku) you may do here, that in the beginning I stressed "showing, not telling." However, this has been changing for some time. I now tend to "show" (the dream story) and cap if off with a "tell" (some reaction and/or insight I've had to the dream as I was writing about it). This also pretty much applies to my free verse dream poems as well. As to what I have begun calling dream narratives, they are a different animal, probably most akin to prose poems.

UNDERGROWTH (photomorph) & THE GAME (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

THE GAME

if transparency's
the name of the game, pray tell,
why's she hiding away
I'd never have come into
this forest if not for her

chasing clarity's
a scary deal when it's down
these dark and narrow
paths, with only the memory
of her moon white face as guide

and will my old eyes
ever adjust to starlight
saving me from snags
and collisions, yet do I even want
to see more of this frightful place

sigh, I think that's just
the point: she's only the bait
there's something else
waiting in this dense dark wood
for me to keep walking on,

and to acknowledge it, even if only sensed
like a deft scent stirring beneath the close canopy

THE ROSE WEEPS (photo) & THE LITTLE BLUE RUG (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

THE LITTLE BLUE RUG

a bright powder blue,
like the sky in the window,
my small bedroom rug
slides around as I vacuum
its thick, very dusty pile

that chore completed
I stroll into my friend's room
where she's cleaning, too
and there she is, vacuuming
my little blue rug, again

OK, maybe she sees
stuff I've missed, or her machine
has better suction
puzzled and patient, I wait until
she looks at me, then reclaim my rug

she has much else to attend to this morning
given her timely but sad breakup last night

the debris of a long time engagement
cannot just be vacuumed away

[three tanka capped by two two-liners on a dream of 4-8-15. This dream was (at one level) an answer to what I was maundering about just before falling asleep: Why has stuff I've thought long settled and cleaned up, been surfacing again. On another topic altogether, a note on that word "stuff." I clearly like it as I use it often enough. It covers a wide range of possible issues (another word I use a lot) and can have echoes of being too much, as in "stuffed full." Even though every time I type "stuff" I can almost hear some other writer saying, Really? Can't you find a better word? :-D Photo "The Rose Weeps" (4-8-15a 028v5) by Roswila]

DISINTEGRATION (photomorph) & DREAM WORK (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

DREAM WORK

editing photos
on the screen of her sleeping
mind's very much like
her waking efforts: they jump
forward each time on a click

a few degrading
as they actually do
revealing little
boxes as if to object
to being fussed at so much

or maybe they're gift boxes offering the peace
of emptiness: there's nothing left to respond

[two tanka capped by a two-liner on a dream of 4-7-15. Not only was this dream photo editing session very realistic, but I kept coming back to dreaming it during the night. Some of the pix were even in color (not that common in my dreams) but I can't recall which colors. This editing session may have been influenced by the slew of pix I took yesterday afternoon. (Hoping to capture some good ones of all the rain drops bejeweling things around here. Yes! We had some rain. Nothing really as far as the drought goes, but every little bit at least helps to conserve on water usage.) Photomorph "Disintegration" (3-31-15 016v4d) by Roswila]

ORDINARY MAGIC (photo) & THE MOTHER I NEVER HAD (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

THE MOTHER I NEVER HAD

the middle-aged mom
turns toward me laughing
"Yes, dear" she says,
"me, too, I have to wash my old
slippers yet another time,

chores do come 'round
again and again, miniscule
foreshadowings
of life's biggest problems
and we deal with them, don't we?"

no glass slipper here
no magical birds to do the sewing
no Fairy Godmother
to whip up transport to a world
sparkling with ongoing glamour

but there's magic nevertheless in our comradely
complaining as we stand in the morning light

this mapping out of the on-going chores of the world
and the different ways to complete them for now

LIGHTING UP THE HEART (photo) & AFTER THE STORM (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

AFTER THE STORM

my friend and I sweep
up the shards of glass spread out
on the patio
the tiled pattern adds to the work
as it tends to obscure slivers

but between us we sweep it clean
amiably and very thoroughly

a neighbor walks by pointing imperiously
at the center of the brightly gleaming patio

look! she grouses, there's a lot of brokenness there!
not at all, I say, that's sunlight on the tile's rose pattern

[a tanka with three two-liners on a dream of 4-5-15. Well, now that the storm the full moon's arrival always causes in my emotional world has passed ... smile! And that's only partly a joke. Photo "Lighting Up the Heart" (6-27-09 2930ev2) by Roswila]

FANNING THE FLAMES (photomorph) & THE ETERNAL FLAME (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

THE ETERNAL FLAME

another betrayal,
sigh, it makes no difference
that I have long known
not to trust anyone, yes,
not one single person

at least not at any profound level
with anything delicate or unique

true, it's not as if
she'd directly betrayed me
but it was shocking
to stumble over those papers
listing her as a foreign spy

and since I was shocked
it means I was at some level
suckered by her sugar-
won't-melt-in her mouth act and in
imminent danger of trusting her

so now I have to
pack this distressingly
hot knowledge away
with everything else I know
but dare not speak out about

let it start an eternal flame, the burning
will remind me betrayal can come from anywhere

[several tanka with two two-liners on a dream of 4-4-15. I keep wanting to let this speak for itself and at the same time wanting to explain. The issue of trust is one of those that gets thoroughly bandied about and yet infrequently actually respected when it comes time for action. This dream/poem largely reflects my own fear of betrayal. I also own my own behaviors that at times were experienced by those in my life as betrayals. Some were, many were not; and so also, I'm sure, some betrayals that I have experienced. Lastly, what I most fear? Betraying myself. And that's the heart of this dream/poem. Photomorph "Fanning the Flames" (3-21-15 010v6) by Roswila]
