RAIN SLIDE (photo) & ON FAILURE (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

ON FAILURE

"Failure!" ... all I can think is "What a failure I am!"
even changing that mental wording to an "All my
efforts fail" doesn't really help, I'm still alone
and endlessly frustrated; but at least the sun's efforts
are steady (if slow) today and I find myself wishing
I could content myself with this ... stay here
... in this now, get all the images and ideas down on
this scratch pad for this poem about this hunger,
and take it someplace else on the wings of metaphor,
but all I find is the same galactic emptiness agitating,
spreading like wisps of cosmic radiation ... "Failure ...
failure ...;" yet as in most galaxies the sun does have its
brighter moments and it expands its reach just in time to
highlight a young woman in a Little Bo-Peep costume,
urgently staring at her smart phone as she wanders
crookedly beside Embarcadero del Mar: what a delightful
anachronism, a fairy tale shepherdess on a cell phone, and I
suddenly recall the new meaning I'd found for the Tarot
deck's Seven of Pentacles the night before: "Not failure,
just a backslide;" and I let go into the slide with a sigh
of relief, warmed by the sun and a bit of fairy tale humor

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

AFTER THE LAVENDER (photomorph) & PRAYER TO THE JACARANDA (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

PRAYER TO THE JACARANDA

oh oceanic tree, shelter me
beneath your great green reaches
from the unblinking eye of God:
it burns far too brightly
for this small
broken soul to bear

AT THE EDGE OF NOTHING (photomorph) & THROW ME A BONE (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

THROW ME A BONE

throw me a bone with even the slightest
shred of meat left on it, and I will content
myself with gnawing away, hungry though
I may remain; or how's about this for
a metaphorical hook: toss me a good
sized piece of cork and along with my
furious paddling I'll be able to stay above
water, at least for now; but all that's ever
flung my way like an afterthought
is the nothingness of knowing nothing,
of not having a clue as to what's going on:
hey, even the idiocy of an "alternative fact"*
teasing me with it's doomed hope would keep
me afloat for a little while, with my
dizzy, throbbing head above the roiling
waves (while my heart goes on drowning)

BEYOND THE RAILING (photo) & MODUS OPERANDI (dream narrative) by Roswila

MODUS OPERANDI

that neighbor I've had a quiet respect and fondness for
but never quite connected to, approaches me as I'm
waiting impatiently for the elevator; he stops at a
distance, backing up against the outdoor railing beyond
which is a precipitous fall; just as I think that distance
and backing up are his usual modus operandi, the
railing breaks apart with a loud crack and he tumbles
through backwards to the concrete below: oh hell!
I yell for someone to call 911 as I rush around the
jagged railing pieces to see if he's OK, deeply worried
not only for him but that somehow it's my fault he fell,
thinking as I hurriedly hobble toward him lying on
the ground that this is typical of me: to feel
responsible for everyone and everything

FISHING FOR STARS (photo) & OH, TO BE SO DRIVEN (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

OH, TO BE SO DRIVEN

oh, to be so driven by my deep hunger
that I would dive like that pelican,
straight for the bait of your body,
no thought that I might miss
and only a dunking if I do,
but what a catch if I don't!

AT THE EDGE (photomorph) & DESPITE (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

DESPITE

despite many years of evidence to the contrary
she continues to believe there's a bottom she
can build she can't fall through, but ... here
goes another one, crumbling from beneath
her hobbling feet with each step; maybe
she's just not yet found the right materials
with which to construct a solid
underpinning, or equally likely, she
doesn't know enough about architecture
and especially how to build for load
bearing; then again, maybe she simply
needs to give up on creating a ground
floor she can't crash through and simply
embrace living in free fall from one
chaotic wind swept surge to another,
an air diver in training
