DIRECTING THE DANCE (photomorph) & HOLE IN THE SKY REDUX (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

HOLE IN THE SKY REDUX

her dreams creep along
tiptoeing past the full moon,
flickering, not fully formed,
a series of frames in an ancient
silent movie in need of restoration:
here a computer screen page
at which she works assiduously
is it a poem, is it graphic art,
or maybe neither, but simply more
electronic flotsam, more
filler for that hole in the sky?
and there a woman returns
to her side, proclaiming
how ecstatic it had been
to dance once more, to be
fully expressive, but
how expressive can it be
to perform someone's else's
choreography? and no matter
the number of personal gestures
the woman claims to have snuck in,
the full moon swallowed
them all anyway,
along with that predictable dance

PLEASE NOTE: in most browsers you can click on the above image for a larger version. Also, the photo accompanying a post is not necessarily meant to illustrate it, but to reflect some small, even slant aspect of the verse, similar to Japanese haiga (illustrated haiku).

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers, as the above is), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

HUNGRY MOON (photomorph) & THAT BIG HOLE IN THE SKY (free verse poem) by Roswila

THAT BIG HOLE IN THE SKY

why do they call that big hole
in sky that keeps coming 'round,
full?

does it swallow
everyone else's dreams, too
on the nights it rolls across
the dark, as it does mine
like some pale pac man

leaving nothing more
than ephemeral impressions
of the night's images,
footprints at tide's edge
that wash away
when the turning
laps over them

[free verse poem written 8-28-15, inspired by another night of little to no dream recall due to the full moon's imminence. A not uncommon experience of mine in the last couple of days just before the moon is completely full. Photomorph "Hungry Moon" (8-18-15 005v2a) by Roswila]

SHADOWS ON THE MOON (photomorph) & ON CYCLING (free verse poem) by Roswila

ON CYCLING

ah, yes, the moon just shy
(ignoring that word's
other meaning) of full, rolls
blissfully along, straining against
her containment

little knowing that such blatant
fullness invites deflation

a slow leaking that ultimately
leaves a dark impression
of nothing

[Free verse dream poem written 8-27-15 that's (at least in part) about the absence of clear dream recall last night. An experience I often have when the moon is just about full. And it'll be full in less than two days. Photomorph "Shadows on the Moon" (8-18-15 005v7b) by Roswila]

INFLATED (photomorph) & ONE MIGHT THINK (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

ONE MIGHT THINK

... and so, after all the nearly unbearable
tension, like wading across a flooded
mine field, one might think that when
it ended again there'd have been
an horrendous bang

or at the very least a drawn out,
rather operatic whimper

but no, it was more as if the last
bit of air escaped the failed
attempt to pump it all up again,
in one tiny sigh of relief

a tepid raspberry

HANGING UP HIS WINGS (photomorph) & GETTING THE POINT (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

GETTING THE POINT

so that's it!
just more yearning for not only
acknowledgement, but appreciation

no matter how artfully the dream
dresses it all up, that's nothing new
under the hot sun of her neediness

all decoration and obfuscation
melting away, like Icarus's wings

leaving her with the naked
hollow shafts of her deepest truth:

she cannot fly unless she feels safe

she cannot feel safe abandoned
and ignored in a corner

BLURRED BORDERS (photomorph) & EVERYONE (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

EVERYONE

they visit me from the past,
each a former friend

two of them (what a pair!)
have brought me to this pass
and then deserted me,
as if that's what everyone does,
and maybe so, but then "everyone"
is "no one" I want to befriend

worse yet they leave me
in the company of him, that one,
definitely now a "no one"
but in this dream quite
a "some one," as he was way back

we curl up together
(not without a wee bit
of hesitation on my part, as I
think, at least I've got
that much sense left)
seeking the creature comfort
of body touching body

it's predictably delicious and
as long as it goes no further,
I figure, what the heck

but of course it does
(go further, that is)
yet even at this more intimate
level I keep my distance

determined for once to set
my own boundaries
(this far and no further)
finding the prospect
of a self-generated distance
even more attractive
than this man out of my past

ENDLESS SNARL (photomorph) & EVEN HEARTS CAN BE TAUGHT (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

EVEN HEARTS CAN BE TAUGHT

oy! how to recount
this dream, in any form at all --
the layers go on
and on, alternating question
then answer, then question

do I go into
the dream's actual images:
letting immigrants
stay in our home so they can
find gainful employment

and the ensuing
endless argumentation by
three generations
of folk, about why they made
certain major decisions themselves

all seems feasible
and all seems to be equally
unbelievable
conscious or unconscious,
faked or deluded or on the mark

and each one of these folk oblivious
to their own spiraling layers

their responses ingrained like old record grooves
the crack of the inculcating whip long forgotten

the word compassion rises: the ultimate answer

but even hearts can be taught varying values
the problem, it seems: teachers that differ
