FOOTPRINTS OF THE FERAL (photomorph) & THAT FERAL LOOK (dream-based monologue) by Roswila

THAT FERAL LOOK

“yeah,” I repeat, “for someone who’s been ‘on
report’ more than anyone, ever, it’s surprising
…no, stunning…that you’ve not been ‘invited’
to move out or at the very least been called
unceremoniously on the carpet numerous times
…oh, you say, you don’t understand why
anyone would report you to begin with? well,
that ignorance points to a probable explanation
for all those reports (if not for their lack of impact
on management): you don’t know diddly squat
about human interactions … not that I’m setting
myself up as someone who knows all that much
myself, but I do know there are times to speak up,
to take a firm, unyielding, even aggressive stand,
and times to shut up, cut one’s losses, and run
like hell … just as now, that look on your face
is decidedly feral: I’m outta here!”

[monologue based on a dream of 12-3-19. I’ll leave it unexplained. Suffice it to say, in the actual dream I was the person “on report.” And in order to express what I needed to from this dream, I changed points of view in the above writing, but not the dream content or trajectory. There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

IT'S TEMPTING TO CALL THEM STARS (photomorph) & A NEW SONG AT AN OLD COUNTRY WESTERN BAR (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

A NEW SONG AT AN OLD
COUNTRY WESTERN BAR

“old flames…can’t hold a candle to you…”*
resounds from the juke box as I squeeze
by it to leave this night of dancing and song
behind; yeah, I think, can you imagine that?
another meltdown and she’s bragging about it?
I begin to slow waltz (country western songs
are often wannabe waltzes, aren’t they) out
the long narrow, side alley entrance to this
dive bar, singing a country western ditty I’ve
begun composing as I swirl: “…the cowboys,
the lovers, the tramps…” as a trio of laughing
emoticons rises in my mind’s eye: a grinner,
a winker, and sideways looker; I wonder as I
slow waltz (it’s a lengthy exit, just as it took
an entire song to enter) how many more ways
can I represent my feelings on love with
the opposite sex? well…I stop short and look
up at the thin strip of stars I can see between
the building tops above…how’s about trying
the literal level for once? there’s no one here
to challenge or correct or talk me out of or
into anything: I lay it out for the stars and
myself in whispers, with a cowboy you’re
one of a herd, with a lover you’re just another
ego trip, and with a tramp he’s here today and
gone tonight; I’ve clearly reached the end of
my long waltz, and the stars have nothing
to add as I settle into walking on into
the deepening night of the city streets,
alternately singing and silently
pondering my new song

[free verse poem on a dream of 12-4-19. *Old Flames written and sung by Dolly Parton. I’ve mentioned here before, I’m sure, that I’m a major country western music fan (classic, not what passes for it nowadays that’s mostly glitzy pop with a dash of country you might just catch if you’re quick). As I’ve been saying here for a few weeks, I’ve been doing a lot more singing in my dreams than is usual for me. This one is even more unusual in that I was writing a song in the dream. Although I have composed tunes/chants in dreams in the past, it’s not been anywhere near as frequent an occurrence as my singing a known song. I got much further long with “my new song” in this dream, but lost all on waking but the little I mention above. I have found writing (words) and tunes to be the hardest to retain in detail on waking. Though they always leave deep if usually rather shapeless imprints in the wet sands of morning. BY MORNING'S LIGHT (photomorph) & ...TO SEE THE LIGHT (dream writing) by Roswila

…TO SEE THE LIGHT

the dream’s completely taken up with funerals,
not actual ones, but an on-going comparison
of the various types; what it ultimately boils
down to are three important aspects common
to them all (and there does seem to be a great
many styles in which people can be sent on
their final ways); as these three aspects found
in all funerals are repeated so as not to be
forgotten, a voice like that of a small
child starts softly singing “I’m…
beginning to see the light”

[on a dream of 12-3-19. Another dream with a song in it. This time, though, the dream “I” was not doing the singing, but observing the entire scene. In a dream I had last night, though, “I” was not only singing, but writing a song as I did.
😊 (I’ve drafted a poem on it and will probably post it tomorrow.) When I googled for the full lyrics and listened to various versions of the song referenced in the above writing, I was delighted it had come up in a dream. I’d forgotten what a lovely song it is! Click here to listen to Doris Day’s rendition. (Yes, her singing of it is right up there with Ella Fitzgerald and Peggy Lee, as far as I’m concerned.) BTW, I still haven’t quite gotten a handle on this dream. Right now, I’m thinking “It’s always darkest before the dawn.” But I know there’s more to it. THE CLAMORING (photomorph) & ORIGAMI PARADE (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

ORIGAMI PARADE

getting above it all gives one a different
perspective on things, or so it’s been said;
but, day after day, all I find here is memories
that like sentient origami figures, unfold and
fold and refold themselves in a never ending
perfect storm of new and ever more alien
forms whose languages I somehow under-
stand: maybe it’s the all too familiar agony
their morphing causes, like aromas hooking
and landing fish after fish, whatever! they
do what they do and I suffer it; at least
most of the time the sun is bright up here,
casting, if only for a moment, a clarifying
light on each origami shape in the parade
as it rises in memory, folding and unfolding
and instantly refolding into some strange yet
familiar creature of opportunity and distance

WATCH YOUR STEP (photo) & "has it been worth it? ..." (non-dream tanka) by Roswila

has it been worth it?
this “long strange trip” we’re on?
spin your own answer
it’s all you’re likely to get
in this madly morphing world

[non-dream tanka written 12-2-19. Those words in quotes are from the Grateful Dead song TRUCKIN’. I’d begun singing it under my breath while sitting yesterday on the balcony that overlooks our retirement community’s pool. Photo “Watch Your Step” (5-25-09 1719[2]) by Roswila]
