WANNABE RAINBOWS (photomorph) & A SILVERY THREAD (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

A SILVERY THREAD

that look on my deceased brother's face?
priceless! he clearly thinks I won't be able
to play the musical wind instrument
he's handing me since he couldn't,
yet he doesn't want me to know
that to his mind his challenge
has a foregone conclusion

well, old windbag that I am,
and to his dropped jaw surprise,
I immediately get a musical note
from this odd instrument,
and then another and another
until a rainbow of tones
flies in the air above our heads

and above them all a tune emerges,
the harmonic line, bright and slim,
a silvery thread winding 'round
and 'round us

until I wake up singing
"Edelweiss...
Edelweiss...
Bless my homeland forever..."*

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers, as the above is), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

Collage on old dream poem note book cover & DISPARATE (dream tanka) by Roswila

DISPARATE

that dream of making
a collage, a bit like a dream
about dreaming:
many disparate pieces in full league
with each other within one frame

[tanka on a dream of 1-14-16. Image: (old, poor scan of) a collage I did, bit by bit, on the cover of a dream poetry notebook many years ago as I filled the book. I may someday do a scan of this cover with my new scanner/printer. It would probably eliminate those stripes on the two Buddha faces (they're not on the collage itself). However, I've become accustomed to them as they echo the zebras on either side (smile). I'd be aiming for increased clarity of details with a new scan, as I've already done what I could with this one in Photoshop to brighten and sharpen it. Collage & Tanka by Roswila]

NOTHING LEFT (photomorph) & BACK TO ASKING QUESTIONS (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

BACK TO ASKING QUESTIONS

why's she so angry at...
ok, call a spade, a spade...
hurt by that old man

he obviously needed the help, and she?
she just as obviously needed to be helpful
seems to be a fair exchange, no ... yes?

but it rankles, it does, it does, no matter how she tries
to convince herself she doesn't need acknowledgment

or isn't feeling like the total fool to find out
he's now receiving the assistance he'd applied for
and never bothered to tell her about

nothing like being tossed aside
like an empty water bottle,
a bit of pollution rattling down
the sidewalk, a useless shell

[free verse poem on a dream of 1-13-16 (posted 1-14-16). Lest this be read as being about a particular person, let me say it's not. As I've thought about this dream while writing the poem it became clear it's a composite of (blush) too many (women and men, family and friends), going back decades. Ultimately, I think the dream came as a warning. I.e., that I'm vulnerable to a repeat right now.]

CLOSE TO THE HEART (photomorph) & MIDNIGHT FORENSICS (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

MIDNIGHT FORENSICS

that woman, the brilliant forensic
anthropology expert who resembles
my many decades deceased mother,
holds a dangerous secret

and a treacherous man's chasing her
to obtain it, though how he can
even know he wants it (I muse,
watching all this from a window)
I don't understand, given how
close to the chest she holds it
(literally, against her full breasts,
like the head of a very young infant)

then she picks up a similar sized
object from the shadows, and I
(trying to follow what she might
be planning) assume she wants
to leave a red herring for him
to pick up and be deceived by

and that's exactly what she does,
but so quickly I don't know if she
switched secret and red herring or not,
I can only see her drop one of them
to the tile floor of the courtyard,
she and whatever it is that falls
silhouetted in the colorless moonlight

and much like in "The Lady or The Tiger"
(I somberly think) one cannot know
which would be the better, or the worse,
for him to come face to face with
in this midnight arena,
her deep secret, or what's fishy

PANIC SPREADS (photomorph) & IN THE CLASSROOM (dream narrative) by Roswila

IN THE CLASSROOM

a youthful teacher opens
the classroom door before
I can turn the handle to enter

sigh, I'd hoped this classroom
in the long familiar
high ceilinged hall
with its dark wood walls,
was empty so I could ponder
my next teaching plan in peace

but not only is she in here,
all her second graders
are sitting at attention
at the old wooden desks

even as I notice the kids,
the boy I'd had to correct a while
back, rushes out of the room
in a panic as if I've caught him
at something

and he's gone before I can even say
that no one needs to leave,
that I just want to sit quietly
at the back of the room

I know any words from me now
would fall on little ears deafened
by imagined and exaggerated fright,
wondering also why the teacher's silent,
does she even know the score

for not the first time I think that I am
as much a second grader as the kids
when it comes to human interactions

not only do I not get what's going on,
but I, too, just want to flee

NIGHT DRAWING (photomorph) & ON HER FIRST NEW DRAWING IN YEARS (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

ON HER FIRST NEW DRAWING IN YEARS

do you see? do you see now?
just keep putting your pencil to paper
and the drawing flows

no more trying to follow those shadow shapes
decorating the wall of the unknown

drawings from life cannot be replications,
outlines of the shadows imposed
like dark stencils on a cave wall

those disappointing shades ultimately led you
into choosing non-doing,
cast as they are by the fantastical
imperatives of all that's past

now do you see?
life lines only rise of their own volition,
to become and to become undone,
within each moment of doing

[free verse poem on a dream of 1-10-16. This dream came in answer to my before sleep incubating question. And the metaphor it chose was a little bit of a surprise as I actually haven't done any drawing in years. BTW, I also take the metaphor literally (is that an oxymoron? :-D) as a suggestion to start drawing again; something I've had the vague urge to do for some time now. SKIRTING THE WALL (photo) & IT'S ABOUT TIME... (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

IT'S ABOUT TIME...

their comments on my blog post
climb my computer screen
like a time lapse video of ivy
up a winter wall

my latest response to theirs
ostensibly a clarification:
"It's actually about time..."
but which way that's intended
is not clear, even to me

and that image of ivy has taken over
my inner view, hanging there,
dark green against a cold blank wall

I wonder if I should edit this photo,
some warming yellow? no, it's winter,
increase the contrast? but why,
the shapes stand out just fine,
and then I write in my mind,
"like three pointed stars
frozen on the wall"

can't I ever leave anything
well enough alone?
ah well, so be it, how best to continue
to write poetry about this moment,
with all that's unseen, unknown,
the ivy invisibly busy inside
with photosynthesis while finding
holds in the stone wall my eye
can't even see, and then there's the wall's
hidden minute crumblings as it ages

it's been said to stay
with the unembellished mystery
of any given moment, but I've always
felt that to be an herculean task

a bit like finding foot- and hand holds
on a sheer concrete wall
