ALL DAILY DREAMKU, TANKA, & DIGITAL PHOTOS (by Roswila) POSTED IN APRIL 2010

Another extremely difficult month, but I’m slogging my way out I think.

a small square chap book
my poems with instructions
and flower photos

photos I’d not known
I knew how to take at all
roses, sunflowers,
my sketches of how to light
their centers from any side

[a dreamku and tanka written 3-31-10 on old dream notes of 7-4-07. I am tempted to interpret this years old dream as clairvoyant, predicting my digital photography passion because at the time of the dream I’d never taken any photos, and did not until March of 2009. I also did not know at the time that the light in which one is shooting is everything in photography. Nor that early on I would develop a penchant for extreme close-ups of flowers, especially roses. By the way, that not knowing how to take photos referenced in the tanka was what I actually thought in the dream. Image by Roswila]

COLD MOON

mobster’s daughter
she’s young dark and on the prowl
night-time alleyways

the man she’s after
and aims to kill alludes her
homeless and muggers
alike give her wide berth
as she shoulders her rifle

shadows retreat the cold moon sets on her rage

BREATHTAKING

we’ve seen film of the
breathtaking valley sunsets
planning a car ride
I check sunset times so as
to catch one at its best

to coast through the soft
pale purple valley shadows
watching the sky glow
red and orange and pale pink
as we’re bathed in lavender

we both admit
there’s no way to time this right
lavender shadows
are delicate and fleeting
but we take a chance and drive

LABELS

I try to copy
the fancy labels she’s using
translucent pastels

we both run out
of titles at the same time
we use initials

black and white and few we go on labeling

our wedding party
gets together secretly
inter-stellar ship

we’re in hiding from
the invading aliens
a sudden ruckus

a small alien
surprises us from behind
tentacles wave

when all quiets down
we learn it’s here to help us
can we believe it

majority vote
blow up all the aliens
along with this one

a spaceship explodes
all on board swirling space dust
humans included

[I'm not up to dealing with words, so here's a photo from last summer. One quick association: The Strength card in the Rider/Waite/Smith Tarot. Because, as on that card, one can't be sure if there's an opening or closing. Yes, technically its being a flower means it's opening, but given it's a frozen image the direction of motion is not captured. The eye can interpret it as going either way. Well, that's a nice thing in the middle of an awful day. I've stumbled across another Found Tarot card. I'll be posting the above as the Strength card to my Tarot Gallery & Journal soon. Still not up to writing anything new and feeling sort of tired of looking at my photos. So here's an old dream haiga (illustrated haiku) of mine. My drawing (reversed from black on white) was done in 1978 and the dreamku several years ago; that date in the lower right is just indicating when I put them together as a dream haiga. I could really use some of the resiliency of "standing people" (trees) these days. Drawing by Roswila]

Still no desire to write anything new or even just to rummage through my photos. So here's an experiment I tried two years ago; making a mandala with words. (Note: the design is an upside down peace sign.) The dreamku used is from April 2008 and says: danger lingers/my old friend naps, her head/on my shoulder. I had thought to work more in this word mandala vein and develop the idea further. Maybe I will.

This photo reflects pretty much how I've been feeling for months. Lots of darkness with little spots of bright color every once in a while. I love these flowers (Bird of Paradise?), and try to get photos of them whenever they're in bloom. Image by Roswila.

Wonder when I'll feel like writing anything new, or even posting an old dreamku. At any rate, in keeping with this daily post serving as a journal, this photo reflects how I'm feeling today. Image by Roswila.

Writing just doesn't seem to be "in the cards" (:-D) for me right now. Here's a photo of another of my favorite type of flowers. Image by Roswila.

all the new plants
pulled up and wilting
can we re-root them

Well, writing isn't calling me yet. But I did feel like searching my old dreamku for one to post. The above dream/ku is from August 13, 2006. Image by Roswila.

NOT READY

the smell of bacon
cooking in the large bedroom
wooden floor creaking
as I lift the black rod iron
hood of the heavy wide grill

where’s the bacon
it’s beneath and flattened by
some contraption,
this long slab of fatty strips
several layers deep

my mouth waters
I peel one strip on the left
it’s not ready

I reluctantly
decide to wait til it’s crisp
I smooth it back down

[two tanka and two dreamku on a dream of 4-15-10. Leave it to me to have my first new dreamku series in a while be about food. Image by Roswila]

COLD COMFORT

the young dark-haired guy
flirts with me on an impulse
I respond in kind
his close buddy interrupts
they walk off together

snowy winter streets
I continue my walk home
wearing summer shoes

under the El train
a block of fresh snow drifts
soggier sandals

frozen finger tips
I put them between my lips
huffing to warm them

KEEPING IT LIGHT

they gently tease
about the treads on my shoes
community of friends
“I’ll take the blame for starting
a trend” I josh, passing by

where a lake once was
I walk sure-footed on lush grass
between small towns
I head for the distant one
I’ve never been in before

suddenly I see
a T.V. news report on
a tsunami expected
from the now deep lake water
and here I am, in the drink

which town to swim to
the one with a familiar
path up the mountain
or the closer unknown one
with a spiral mountain road

I choose to swim
to the known town on the right
pulling myself by
the lake’s rough edge only hurts
so I stick to swimming

steady progress
a wave rises on my right
the tsunami?
no, only a precursor
I continue my dogged swim

trudging into town
I enter a doctor’s office
big baby and mom

the doctor pulls
something from the baby’s ear
smiles all around

“It’s a rare baby
that’s never put something there”
my parting light joke

NO MORE COMPOST

the blonde young man climbs
up willowy tree branches
shelter from the storm
we watch on T.V. gasping
when he tumbles straight down

the search turns him up
in a large dark compost heap
familiar big cave

totally unhurt
he greets me happily
“Remember?” he says
and I do recall we’d meet
here as young children

bouncing and then burrowing secret playground

now only a hollow
crowded and trashed tourist trap
no more compost

ENVY’S WAGES

they pay attention
only to the toddler boy
the family’s women

no argument
he’s truly adorable
envy stifled

then I notice the
women’s long dark eyelashes
my colorless ones
I say to Mother how I
wish I’d inherited them, too

I start cutting
my thickening old toenails
one won’t budge

knowing I could hurt
myself I ignore caution
fast deep flesh cut

I grab at tissues
preparing to staunch the flow
envy’s wages

A NEW POSITION

the long estranged friend
picks me up in her small car
my new job awaits

her driving scares me
I shift a long dark wood pole
from under my left arm
to my right so it’s out of
her way but it doesn’t help

I don’t want to say
I’m not taking the job
she’s driving me to
she doesn’t seem to care when
I do, and just plans supper

they all still believe
I’ve accepted the job
welcoming staff

I’ve just stopped by
to get my numerous files
how to carry them
their boxes have long since
crumbled with age and much use

my friend and I stand puzzling large airy office space

WHAT A PASS

my long-time good friend
drives us on the interstate
smeary sun-roof

I start cleaning it
so that I can take photos
centrifugal force
or the speed we’re going
but I’m forced against her

struggling over
to my side of the front seat
then plastered backwards
what a pass to try to get
a clear view of the sunny sky

[dreamku and two tanka on a dream of 4-22-10. Image by Roswila]

April 23, 2010

a dark young man
steps from behind the counter:
where’s the money!

fast food nuggets
ten tiny copper dimes
left by a plate

[No new dreamku for today and I slept very late after a good but exhausting day so don't want to spend time going through my older writing. I'll let a photo suffice. This is a new one from the grounds where I live. It's a very tiny orchid. I had no idea what it really looked like as I couldn't clamber in close given my bad knee and tender ankle. So I didn't really note anything but the gorgeous color until I saw this photo on my computer. This is not unusual and one of the delights of photography for me: seeing things in the photo I'd either not noticed "live" or not been close enough to see. Image by Roswila]

LOST

lost in the Bronx or
is it upper Manhattan
looking for a job
the employment agency’s
not where I recall it is

uninvited I
enter a stranger’s bedroom
I offer a buck
to make just one or two calls
on his phone which seems quite fair

in his living room
I can’t find the right number
he looks suspicious

dropping a cudgel
on the floor with a loud bang
he quickly mumbles
“...in case you’re not who you say”
I flinch but understand

UNHINGED

youthful handsome twins
break into my apartment
unhinged front door

my young son and I
try to figure out a way
to call the police
failing that, to talk the twins
into just leaving our home

one twin speaks for both
his arrogance frightens me
as he laughs us off

then they’re just gone
my son and I are alone
in our home again

as relief slowly
settles in I pass the door
it’s off the hinges!

the twins must be back
I rush to warn neighbors that
their door’s unhinged too

I’m afraid to check
my rooms for the awful twins
I just know they’re here

in a hushed phone call
first my son then I try to
get the cops to come
they refuse to help since we’ve
not actually seen the twins

I put the phone down panic hangs me up

OBAMA REDUX

Obama’s married
but spends the dinner party
canoodling with me
when I ask about his wife
I get charming double talk

[tanka on a dream of 3-30-10. It was President Barack Obama in the dream. I’ve had more dreams about this president than all the others together. Image by Roswila]

PHOTO REALISM

photos become real
when I glance at them quickly
new magic power

they stay real only briefly my amusement

someone whispers:
you need to look longer
for them to remain real
but then you risk revealing
your secret magic talent

"Do Not
Pick Off
Means You
Please"

The above is my contribution to The New York Times "A Moment in Time" global photography event that took place today at 15:00 UTC (8:00 a.m. here in Goleta, CA). Here's a link to all the information about this project: A MOMENT IN TIME.

Very briefly put, the idea is to have photos from all around the world that were taken at the same actual time. They will all be assembled and posted in a "mosaic" online in a few days. I will post the link to it here once it's up.

This poignant sign is in a corner cactus garden of the retirement community in which I live. We residents wait excitedly for each of the various buds to open and are saddened when one is occasionally then picked in secret for private viewing only.

I grumbled extensively when I had to get up at 6:30 this morning in order to be out scouting photo ops for the event by 7:30. But I'm now actually very grateful as I was re-reminded of how beautiful our grounds are in the early morning light.

‘til next time, keep dreaming,
