NEON RAINBOW (photomorph) & IN THE SKY (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

IN THE SKY

dream one:

look! up in the sky
a huge ribbon of bright colors
no, not a rainbow
an actual paper ribbon
arching over the high roofs

will the small ribbon
I hold rolled up in my hand
display such color?
I let it loose onto to the wind
and watch it lazily unfurl

its many colors take quite a while to appear
popping one by one in their own good time

and what better thing to do this sunny afternoon
than to watch the advent of a would be rainbow

dream two:

like Superman sans telephone booth
he morphs from a plain Joe into Batman,
though his cape and tight onesie
appear in shades of light grey,
not his usual black

all this happens during his leap
from one building top to another,
his feet barely touching the second roof
before he takes off again into the air

from where I watch on the sidewalk below
my inner superhero quickly responds
and I morph even as I fly up
to meet with him in the sky

one might well wonder
what brewing situation calls forth
this convergence of archetypes

[2 tanka & 2 two-liners (dream one) & free verse (dream two), based on dreams of 9-4-15. As I've mentioned here before, sometimes a theme gets explored and/or clarified in an evening's dreams. E.g., I see several echoes of the first dream's images in the second's. BTW, that first line is straight from that famous line about Superman "Look! Up in the sky, is it a bird? is it a plane? No, it's Superman!" I didn't dream that line, but it popped the minute I placed pencil to blank page earlier this morning. Photomorph "Neon Rainbow" (9-2-09 6439v2h) by Roswila]

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers, as the above is), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

UP A TREE (photomorph) & SHE'S NOT HEAVY (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

SHE'S NOT HEAVY

omigawd!
she's trying to get down
out of that top level
of the bunk bed by herself

what can I do, though,
she's like a hippopotamus
trying to fumble its way
out of a tree and she'd no more
pay attention to, much less
understand any guidance
from me than a water horse

just look at her!
upside down and backwards
on that ladder, she'll land
on that old grey head of hers ...

well, at least I can be a living
safety net and hold her tight
from my standing vantage
as she inches her way along,
rung by rung ...

gawd! she's big, but I've got a good
grip on her, and she's not heavy,
she's my sister

[free verse poem on a dream of 9-3-15. Yes, that reference at the end is to the old song He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother. I didn't hear that song in the dream. But it was an immediate and strong association as I drafted this poem. BTW, the woman in the dream was a stranger, another old lady like I am. With vague associations to a couple of different old women I befriended in my youth, as well as some I know now. There's also a clear association to my actual younger brother (who died a while back). Not to mention a sense this scene is also about my own inner struggles. All of which makes this a jam packed little dream. Photomorph "Up A Tree" (9-2-09 6439v2gb) by Roswila]

AT THE EDGE (photomorph) & THE VERY NATURE (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

THE VERY NATURE

her part in the show:
to sing selected songs from
Elvis's sampler
leading off each dusty ditty
with a bit of its history

yeah, quite a challenge
she got handed there, isn't it?
a lot for even
a professional to handle
and she's way behind preparing

why does she always
do this with big things? delay
'til the last minute?
and now she can't seem to hail
a cab from atop this verdant cliff

how will she ever
get back to street level so
she can return home
where her notes and sheet music
lie in tall alphabetized stacks

as she's pondering,
the dark earth of the cliff edge
starts lowering her
ever... so... slowly... down to an exit
from this park at the center of the city

she holds her breath afraid to even move,
in awe of this generous gift from the earth

one she neither expected, nor earned, nor deserves
but isn't that the very nature of marvelous grace

FRACTURED (photomorph) & ON WRITING ABOUT DREAMS (mixed format poem) by Roswila

ON WRITING ABOUT DREAMS

should I examine
what's beyond the breach opened by
the dream's catapult
or simply brick the hole up
as usual with a poem

yet what response could be fully free of put-on:
just to recall is to have already made changes

EXPLOSION OF COLOR (photomorph) & STUMBLING AROUND (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

STUMBLING AROUND

yes, yes, that magic circle you cast
still stands in your inner world,
maintaining a safe space
and, yes, many years of hard work
have been done in its gently lapping
harbor waters, loading
and unloading cargo
from both near and far

but now it's time to cast another
circle, at the heart of this first,
in which to do the hardest work,
a deeper, safer haven
in which there's refuge
even from one's self

from those ancient fragments that lie
buried like munitions lobbed about
centuries ago in a war neither
lost nor won, that still explode
when stumbled upon

IN THE TEETH OF THE MOON (photomorph) & JUST AS THEY ARE (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

JUST AS THEY ARE

as if we were in the wild
my black wolf protects me,
his chosen human, from a pack
of humans roaming this world
that's tame only on its surface

and as always he feeds heavily afterwards,
while I, knowing his natural urge
is now to mate, seek a private room

I will accommodate him
and quite willingly, but only away
from the prying eyes
of other humans who would
never understand

as I approach the chosen room's door
a teenage boy grabs at me,
prattling on about power,
clearly believing he understands
it all and that this in itself
holds even greater power

my black wolf snarls
at this passionate deluded young man,
but as soon as I think I agree
with my protector's toothy assessment
I recall a zen quote that cools
my defensiveness:

"If you understand -- things are just as they are.
If you do not understand -- things are just as they are."

THE LAUNCH (photomorph) & IN THE SCHEME OF THINGS (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

IN THE OVERALL SCHEME

"I'll be seeing you,"
I tell her, and she assumes
way too much from that,
as usual I'd been thinking
only metaphorically

and she, concretely,
believing I'd meant I'll be there
at the sunrise hour
of her long planned departure
to wave her off into the sky

but I won't let her
down now by not showing up
for one more good-bye,
though there's little time at all for
me to dress and go the distance

in the overall scheme of things, it's really not much to
do for a dear friend, even if based in misunderstanding
