SHELTERING THE FUTURE (photomorph) & THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME (on two dreams) by Roswila

THE SHAPE OF THINGS TO COME
(a play in two short acts)

Act One:

my brother's alcove area in my apartment
has been cleaned out, and I mean almost
entirely emptied, only his bed and one aqua
table/shelf remains; a large dark haired man and I
stand viewing it in surprise, he wondering out loud
if my brother will put more stuff in it, decorate it,
so to speak; I say it would be another surprise
if he did so and not for any monetary reason
(there's that Thrift Store just around
the corner) but because it's never been
my sibling's wont to care about appearances
or even, to some extent, ease of utility

Act Two:

the large dark man from the previous act
watches the selection process: a different
photo of Elvis Presley, from all stages
of his career, is being chosen for each day
of a full month; I'm doing this on my computer,
but once an entire month's worth is pegged,
I'll print them all, playing card size and,
oddly enough, round shaped; a cleaning lady
approaches, curious as to what's being done;
I'm not sure she understands though she
nods sagely when we explain; however, she
clearly knows her work and sets right to it,
carefully whisking a purple feather duster
all around my work station

[on two dreams of 4-29-16. It was my actual brother as a young man, and when Elvis shows up in my dreams he's a father figure. (My father was a singer and there are other associations. BTW, both my brother and father are deceased.) So it seems there's more work being done on my issues with men, going back to their roots. It's too much to go into here, but by a process of association I realized not only is more forgiveness of both my father and brother being asked for, but of myself for not having been what they wanted/needed me to be. I find it interesting that two colors show up, one in each dream, as I rarely dream in color. So I googled them and these are the meanings I see as probably relevant here: Aqua: Recharges our spirits during times of mental stress and tiredness, alleviating feelings of loneliness; helps to open the lines of communication between the heart and the spoken word; and Purple: Symbolizes the union of body and soul, which creates a balance between our physical and spiritual energies; inspires unconditional and selfless love and promotes sensitivity and compassion. There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers, as the above is), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

BURGHAL PYRAMID (photo) & THE PYRAMID SCHEME (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

THE PYRAMID SCHEME

go figure! she's actually bought into
a magazine subscription pyramid scheme,
albeit a new one started by a man
she respects who's highly intelligent,
and his partner (and wife) is that famous
pop singer whose songs she so likes

they're both very thorough and concerned
that as a new member she have all
the necessary support (and then some),
even providing info on virus protection
for her computer (like just about every-
thing else these days, most of the business
involved resides on the internet)

she'd known the man would make something
of himself when she first met him,
years ago, recalling how he'd been
developing this business plan
way back then, constructing it
despite few resources,

as if in the middle of a desert,
through which he'd haul the carved blocks
of granite determination,
fitting them creatively
and tightly together,

clearly a pyramid that would come
through any invasion or dust storm
to stand taller and shine all the brighter

FROM EACH ACCORDING TO THEIR ABILITY (photomorph) & MEN! (on two dreams) by Roswila

MEN!

the male of the species can't even stay
consistent! all day she'd been complaining
in her mind "Men!" filling that one word
with her frustration and irritation
like a huge water balloon and mentally
tossing it at any one of the several
male objects of her pique

yet in the night's dreams they're open
and easy to be with, clearly expressing
what they want from or to give to her,
stepping up to the plate of any
interaction with her

the first a group of artists, male war vets
whose wood working, nay, sculpting, appears
in an exhibit that, to use the clichè,
blows her mind it's so beautiful

especially the work of one soft spoken
vet, a golden brown wood container,
about the size of a bread box (remember those?),
not one nail used, all seams held together by
and part of the design itself, corners
and sides lightly curved inviting touch

then there's that younger man who reminds
her gently of what she'd forgotten to do,
his mouth tilted in the corners in what
she senses is an always genuine smile, and adds
that his wife reminds him of those things
he doesn't tend to remember or even notice

the trick being not to get hung up
on the disconnects or apparent forgetfulness
between them but to rely on each other
for any necessary reminders

well, the dreams told her, didn't they?
talk about necessary reminders ...
but she can't help releasing
one last frustrated "Men!"

[on two dreams of 4-27-16. I woke up singing part of that song "I Hate Men" from Kiss Me Kate. Especially the line: "He may have hair upon his chest but, sister, so does Lassie." LOL! Photomorph "From Each According to Their Ability" (4-15-14 037v6) by Roswila]

ROOM FOR TWO (photo) & WHAT A TRIP! (on a dream) by Roswila

WHAT A TRIP!

boarding the van/bus/ATF I wonder
just what it's for and where this guy
is taking me and the several others
getting on this odd vehicle

I feel relatively little anxiety about going
along for this ride to I-don't-know-where
but can see seating's going to be a problem
(no leg room and my long legs
with their arthritic knees need space)

just as I find a seat that can meet
my needs I realize this outing might be
a photo safari and I sit back hopefully
to look out the window

then an attractive man about my age,
someone I'd noticed earlier but not met,
sits next to me and before we can
even say hello another man flops into
the narrow space on his other side

yowza! that pushes the attractive man
right flat up against me, shoulder
to ankle (not that I mind at all,
mind you, a touch deficit goes with me
everywhere, even into dreams)
and when he apologizes for the accidental
mashing I say "Not to worry..."

to make a long story short, things progress
between us, so far beyond mannerly exchanges
that fellow passengers give us the back bedroom
I'd not known was there (I laugh in a somewhat
lucid* way, thinking it's far better than simply
being ordered to "Get a room!")

and now to draw a polite curtain on the rest
of this dream, it seems that sometimes
not knowing where we're going can take us
exactly where we need to be

THE FIRE BELOW (photomorph) & THE BURNING BARN (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

THE BURNING BARN

"I'm just like a horse running
back into a burning barn,"
I think as I embrace him

but there's no conflagration here
of any kind, simply the deep creature
comfort of holding and being held

for once he stands still for it,
no awkwardness or hidden
resistance, only wide open welcome
with a soupҫon of puzzlement
and well might he wonder why I'm
back in his arms because I do, too

then I happen to glance
at my carpet, wincing when I notice
all the dust accumulated at the edges,
my readily shed silver hairs tangled
throughout it in little tumbleweeds

yes, it's time for me to clean up
my own act and now, even for a burning barn,
I don't think it will be such a terrible task

AT THE BARRE (photo) & BOOKKEEPING (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

BOOKKEEPING

even in sleep
trying for the gazillionth time
to balance the books,
to make everything come out right

and me, practically enumerate,
still attempting to do mathematics
in my poor befuddled head

ah, there, now it balances,
though the debit's a humongous figure
standing like a blatant billboard
on a highway to nowhere,
while the credit (that pitifully small number)
crouches in the narrow right hand column
imprisoned in dark brackets

don't ask me how this can be balanced,
I certainly don't know, but I'm told
that it is in the larger scheme of things
and something beneath my anxiety agrees,
even as it trails an ironic footnote:
why keep books at all?

[free verse poem on a dream of 4-24-16. I blush to admit it. Although not totally enumerate, I have a devil of a time doing the times table in my head (thank heavens for calculators). Photo "At the Barre" (3-22-16 021v3) by Roswila]

SHATTERED RAINBOW (photomorph) & "empty vision..." (small non-dream poem) by Roswila

empty vision
a rainbow's promise
