AT THE END OF THE TRAIL (photomorph) & TIME FOR A BREAK (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

TIME FOR A BREAK

the fractious old horse
arrives at the home ranch
it's time for a break --
in her rider's mind, Tarot cards
grow from the trees like leaves

he keeps her reined in to a comfortable amble
next to the fence along the dusty entrance road

the dream "I" follows
a sudden thought sparkling:
they're body and soul!

[a tanka, a two-liner, and a dreamku on a dream of 4-3-15. A full moon night, full of dreams about horses and Tarot cards. Yup, this was only the last of the dreams and the one I recall most clearly. BTW, I did not write in that dreamku ending. That was part of the actual dream, and it's not surprising, given how much I care about both horses and Tarot. Oy, even as I type this I'm having all sorts of feelings and associations. This is one of those dreams I'll draw some Tarot cards on (see?) later today to further explore it. BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO DREAMKU (& PHOTOS):

But first, a request: please let me know of any typos or other sorts of blunders in my posts. As my eyes age I'm finding more mistakes are creeping into what I put up here no matter how many times I proof it all. Thanks for any help!

The dream-based poems posted on this blog -- dreamku, tanka, two-liners, monoku, free verse, dream narratives -- are offered in the spirit of collaboration. I have done my part. Now it’s your turn to jump in and see what comes up for you. I.e., there is no right or wrong way to relate to any of these dream offerings. Even my own understandings of them change over time. And it gives me joy when a reader sees something in any of them that I have not. (This all applies to any of the non-dream poems posted here, too.)

Also please note that a dream poem or narrative is not intended as an interpretation of a dream, or even a complete and accurate rendering of one. It is my attempt to get down dream imagery/action that grabs me and, as I write about it, elicits my conscious written association and response. Nor do I believe that one has to remember dreams in order for them to do their work. In my understanding, we are much more than our conscious selves.

You may also note in any further reading on dreamku (the specific forms of dreamku, tanka, two-liners and monoku) you may do here, that in the beginning I stressed "showing, not telling." However, this has been changing for some time. I now tend to "show" (the dream story) and cap if off with a "tell" (some reaction and/or insight I've had to the dream as I was writing about it). This also pretty much applies to my free verse dream poems as well. As to what I have begun calling dream narratives, they are a different animal, probably most akin to prose poems.

THE BRUSH-OFF (photomorph) & AS USUAL (2 dream tanka w/2-liner) by Roswila

AS USUAL

she really should have
known better, just because they
believe she witnessed
the murder doesn't mean they
accept who she knows did it

trust in her vision
always gets snuffed out when faced
with their fearfulness --
no, they loudly reiterate,
turning their stiff backs on her:

we know him, he'd never, no never, do something
so heinous! as usual, your imagination's run amok

[two tanka capped by two-liner on a dream of 4-2-15. I think this one is partly due to pre-moon syndrome (what I label PMS, i.e. my difficulty under the waxing gibbous moon phase and this is a really rough one), mixed with some flotsam and jetsam from the wreck of my youth. The latter of course still having some resonance in my present life. I'm tempted to say this dream/poem is hyperbolic. But in the emotional world's depths things are often of much greater significance than up here, on the material plane. Photomorph "The Brush-Off" (3-31-15 0164a) by Roswila]

AT THE CROSSING (photomorph) & THE LITTLE MAN (2 dream tanka) by Roswila

THE LITTLE MAN

what an annoying
little man, disrupting the edge
of my lazy gaze --
go away, I think, as if
he were crossing some line

and in truth he is,
though when waking or dreaming
a border line lasts
only as long as it takes
to draw it across a moment's flow

[two tanka on a dream of 3-31-15. Hm, seems the issue of boundaries and lines are really up for me right now. (Yesterday's dream poem is called "Drawing the Line.") Synchronistically, something very like "The Little Man" actually happened to me the next morning as I was just sitting, enjoying the sunlight. CROWDED CORNER (photo) & DRAWING THE LINE (dream tanka series w/dreamku) by Roswila

DRAWING THE LINE

asking for a lift
with my large old quilt's no fun --
swallowing my pride's
never easy, especially
not when he's involved

but I do, and he
doesn't hesitate, saying
yes, of course, just meet
him in a few minutes
by the cottage front door

I take advantage
of the waiting time to rush
off and gather more
stuff of mine that I most want
to take away with me

I'd forgotten
how much I had stored here
the shelves look like
a mini-mart, filled with jars,
boxes, bags, what-have-you

time is short and I
don't want him to think I've gone
ahead without him
I decide to grab the closest
things I really wish to take

ah, shampoo for sure,
and this, and this ... my arms fill ...
no, I draw the line
at chocolates, they stay on
the still cluttered shelves

it seems certain wants
(and maybe even some needs)
best not be met

[tanka series capped by a dreamku on a dream of 3-30-15. This is the dream/poem that got put aside in favor of posting that nun dream poem yesterday. Together, they make an interesting contrast. Yet I also see similarities. One being that sense of moving on. As always, there's a lot more in both dreams (both similar and different from each other) but I'll stop here. Of course, I simply must comment on leaving chocolate behind. Good move, Kelly! On a different topic altogether, does one say "Happy April Fool's Day" or simply pull a joke on someone? I don't have any pranks up my sleeve, so I'll simply wish you lighthearted fun today. Photo "Crowded Corner" (3-31-15 007v2) by Roswila]

WINGS OF SUNSET (photomorph) & HOMECOMING (2 dream tanka w/a dreamku) by Roswila

HOMECOMING

nuns wander around
the sunny grounds of the retreat
singing joyfully
"Come and be near us, come and be
near us, come and be near us, now..."
I find myself
singing along silently,
following one nun's
billowing black habit,
into a small chapel
I have to fight back
tears when I learn this service
is for homecoming
soldiers, including those who've
gone on to the Greater Home,
as the little chapel's
air shimmers with the call
"...come and be near us, now"

[three tanka capped by a dreamku and run together, on the last dream of 3-30-15. I'd already drafted a poem on an earlier dream, in the wee hours of the night. But when I woke for the morning with this dream singing away I put that earlier dream/poem on hold. BTW, I can still even recall the simple melody my dreaming mind made up in this dream. EMANATIONS (photomorph) & LIVING WITH RADON (2 dream tanka w/2 2-liners) by Roswila

LIVING WITH RADON

two youngish women
enter her basement complex
one opens the door
to a large stuffed storage room
peering around it nervously

she quickly closes
the door as her companion
comments softly:
you know she's very tough
even after what happened,

determined to not only go on but thrive even though
there must still be much leaking up from the deeps,

her personal radioactive spill, or worse yet,
old injury rising like waves of radon

[two tanka with two two-liners on a dream of 3-29-15. Hyperbolic? Maybe. Or maybe just the measure of the personal work I have left to do. Ah well, I'm retired. It gives me something to do other than complain about arthritic pain, or worry about the on-going drought here in CA. (Not to mention what's going on world-wide.) TREE OF NIGHT (photomorph) & TIME TO GET BUSY (2 dream tanka w/1 dreamku) by Roswila

TIME TO GET BUSY

the dreams elude her
she stops short, letting the vague
images fade away
yet one remains suspended,
a large pen and ink drawing

its branching black lines
resolve into a large tree
she feels her love
for Standing People* respond,
warming her waking body

time to get busy
coloring in this spreading sketch
the day's Tree of Life**

[two tanka capped by a dreamku on a dream of 3-29-15. *Standing People, one American Indian term for trees. **The term "Tree of Life" is loaded with associations (just try Googling it). But the most immediately relevant for me is its centrality in the ancient Hebraic esoteric wisdom system, the (Hermetic) Qabalah. Which I studied many years ago, as the Tree of Life and The Tarot have been fruitfully corresponded. Photomorph "Tree of Night" (3-21-15 020v5) by Roswila]
