RED MOON RISING (photomorph) & IN MY FRIEND'S HAND (on a dream) by Roswila

IN MY FRIEND'S HAND

there's a complicated mess in the otherwise
nearly empty room where my friend says
she receives a daily visit from a shy
hummingbird; it's clear there won't be
any visit today (maybe the novelty of my
presence, and the mess is scaring it off) so
I think to help her by packing everything
away in a flat hinged plastic box, including
the bright red plastic ring that the hummer
always lands on and picks up; then a smile
beams on her beautiful old face as she points
around in the air "There, do you hear it?
Do you see it? My hummingbird's
coming in for a landing anyway!" And
indeed, I do, and quickly ask her if she
thought to take out that ruby colored ring
I'd put inside the box; she looks at me
as if to say "Don't be silly, of course I did..."
as the hummer picks up the almost glowing red
ring and flies to drop it in my friend's hand

[on a dream of 6-17-16. This is probably one of the most straight forward dreams I've had in ages (the imagery is all, directly or indirectly, from one actual waking life situation). And I'd like to think the reassurance I get from it is all there is to it. Though, of course, as with most dreams there's probably at least one other less apparent level to it. But I'm not going to plumb the depths today. I'll take the reassurance and run! Smile. (Ack...I didn't run soon enough. I just caught a really painful other level, having to do with my failures.) There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers, as the above is), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

IN THE FACE OF IT (photo) & CONCERNING ISSUES (on two dreams) by Roswila

CONCERNING ISSUES

a middle aged man's quite concerned
that this lovely woman's way too young
for that man (after all, she's only 14);
another adult man tells him not to worry,
that he knows the guy who's pursuing
her and he really does like her
(that he's not just being a horn dog
after a tasty morsel), that they should
simply leave this May/December pair alone
in that small room and let nature
take it's course, for what was it
that old T.V. commercial said?
ah, yes, "You can't fool Mother Nature"

* * * * * * * *

an elderly woman's male friend
and I are very concerned about her;
I take a chance and say to her that
maybe she needs to see a doctor
(given my distrust of all medical folk,
that's a good indication of how disturbed
I am); she responds with one of her
most pleasing smiles (the kind
that usually goes right to my heart),
saying she'd just spent 14 hours
in the hospital having some issue
(other than the one worrying me)
checked out, and she was told she's fine,
that all shall be well, and all manner
of thing shall be well*

[on two separate dreams of 6-14-16. *Even in the dream I knew these last two lines to be from a quote by Julian of Norwich (an anchoress, a woman who set herself apart for God and lived isolated in a cell): “All shall be well, and all shall be well and all manner of thing shall be well.” I note the number 14 appears in both dreams and that the date of the dreaming was the 14th. That feels like a clue that these dreams are largely, maybe even entirely about current issues. I also googled for the esoteric meaning of the number 14, and found this phrase to be most relevant: a "... great need in life ... to achieve balance, harmony, temperance and prudence." CRADLE OF EVENING (photo) & PRAYER TO THE PAIN (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

PRAYER TO THE PAIN

help me not to reject or numb or analyze you
all out of shape or sense, but rather to embrace
you as the gift you are, hot and damp
with the pulse of mystery like a newborn

help me, pain, to breathe open these narrow
horizons of habit and certitude to cradle
your blessing of innocence

[non-dream free verse poem written 6-15-16. Seventh in a "Prayer to..." series, all posted here (Prayer to the Sun, Prayer to the Haze, Prayer to Empty Moments, Prayer to An Other, Prayer to Surrender, and Prayer to Deep Sadness) so just search by title (search box is in the upper left of this page) if you're interested. ROSE IN ABSENTIA (photomorph) & THE EMPTY DOORWAY (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

THE EMPTY DOORWAY

he knocked at the doorway
of yet another dream last night
and as always did not wait for me
to hobble to the door and open up
but walked quickly and silently away
how will I ever know what he has to say
if he won't take a stand? either at the door
of the unconscious or here in waking life
where his absence swirls in the air
whenever I answer what I take
to be his call

BUGS IN THE MACHINE (photomorph) & THE APARTMENT ALCOVE (on a dream) by Roswila

THE APARTMENT ALCOVE

the small alcove's been set up
as a sickroom, hospital bed and all,
its resident a young, dark haired
woman friend of mine who's
totally bed-bound, her friendly cat
checking out each visitor before
they enter the neatly packed space

as I stand before it, there's a huge
kerfuffle, her cat challenges a new,
smaller cat's arrival in that way of cats,
more fuss and fur than any real hurt

as I watch the fur settle I decide
to finally do a much needed
vacuuming of the entire apartment,
briefly pleased that the man
I'm currently quite attracted to
is around to watch me, my awareness
of his look like warm hands on my back
as I bend to the considerable task

when my vacuum hits the outside
edge of the alcove I see that it's now
completely empty but for dust
and dirt, somehow I know my sick
friend's condition advanced overnight,
and she's been moved to a temporary
better equipped space in New York City,
awaiting entrance to a fully suitable facility

I swallow my sorrow for the time being
and go about vacuuming the alcove,
chasing down a sudden flood of bugs
as they scatter wildly before
the vacuum's noisy maw

[on a dream of 6-13-16. These images are from a couple of current situations, and the memory raised by one of them (I took care of my best friend many years ago as she died of cancer, in the apartment we shared). There are also the usual twists and embellishments dreaming adds. Photomorph "Bugs in the Machine" (6-12-16 001v6b) by Roswila]

FIRE FALL (photomorph) & ONE HOT MESS (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

ONE HOT MESS

hey, I didn't choose to wear this, all I did
when that hot wind hit me like a proverbial
ton of bricks, was to stumble backwards
and fall into this skirt's sensuous ambush
now I can't get it off, its voluminous
fire engine red velvet clings,
its waistband with no stretch, no zipper,
no buttons, no way at all to pull it off,
while what brains I have left go
into meltdown, my breasts peak
on high alert, and everything below
my waist heats, melting my knees
and curling my toes, I can't even heft
this flaring for a cooling breeze
will I be stuck forever beneath the torrid
fallout of this one stumble

LIFE AT THE EDGE (photo) & AS DECEPTIVELY SIMPLE AS ONE ... TWO ...THREE (dream writing) by Roswila

AS DECEPTIVELY SIMPLE
AS ONE ... TWO ... THREE

(1)

she wants to know where I got my new sneakers,
though I don't think this means she likes them
as they're rather different, a hybrid I grew
from the seeds of two other pair: bright red up front
with variegated floral embroidery, and pink
in the back with darker spots that morph
as I walk; I try to explain how I went about
doing this: first gathering seeds from one of each
parental pair of shoes, then soaking them together
in water before planting, but I don't even get
to describing the fun harvesting process
before our fragile connection's lost

(2)

being her employee doesn't seem
as much of a challenge as it might have
a couple years ago: I'm unruffled by her hidden
anxious oversight and unconscious judgment,
and simply go ahead with the many projects
she assigns me in my own peculiar fashion,
moving back and forth, from one to the other
as the spirit moves me and even adding
creative flourishes if I so desire, after all
I'm retired and don't need to work,
and will only do so as long as it's enjoyable,
though I blush to admit, I also like
this feeling of being needed

(3)

what a magnificent old tree, I think, as I look up
at the roof of the several story building on which
it grows, a tremendous windblown cedar, but immediately
feel sorrow as I can see it's barely clinging to that edge
all life comes to at the last; it's such a difficult shot
almost straight up against the bright light of the sky,
but I scramble for my camera anyway, hoping my lack
of technical skills won't ultimately leave me
in front of my computer screen
filled with regret
