SUNSET ETCHING (photomorph) & THE SAX (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

THE SAX

lying on a poolside bench
the sax glints in the ambient
light of the falling night
etchings winking from
its curved length:
a golden swan resting
before taking off again
to warm the chilly evening
with its radiant song

[non-dream free verse poem written 7-2-16. I observed this last night during a break in a live jazz performance by the Dennis Berger Trio at our community's poolside. Photomorph "Sunset Etching" (6-28-16 001v7) by Roswila]

PLEASE NOTE: in most browsers you can click on the above image for a larger version. Also, the photo accompanying a post is not necessarily meant to illustrate it, but to reflect some small, even slant aspect of the verse, similar to Japanese haiga (illustrated haiku).

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers, as the above is), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

CRACKING UP (photo) & THAT OLD TORTURE (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

THAT OLD TORTURE

fantasy after tumultuous, yearning fantasy,
each trailed and sometimes rudely interrupted by
a condemning or self-pitying thought (or, though
rarely, by the soft touch of compassion or reason),
each laying down a convincing claim to reality,
to being "the way things are" (or at the very least
should be) ... being of two minds fearful of flying apart
at any given juncture doesn't say the half of it,
it's more like that old torture: a horse tied to each
of one's limbs then whipped up by the executioner
to run off in opposing directions, leaving nothing
behind but a pulsating hot mess

THE GOLDEN BOUGHS (photomorph) & A CHANGE OF VENUE (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

A CHANGE OF VENUE

he gathers me up
(literally) in his long strong arms,
sensing I'd welcome it,
the white in his blonde hair
glittering under the ceiling lights

although we'd agreed
to meet here he's changing venue
to his upper crust home
where he drops me (figuratively
speaking) at his door and rushes off

but not 'til commending
me to his younger sister's care,
explaining he has
an unexpected and vital appointment
and will be back as soon as possible

his sister's a small blonde beauty,
well-educated and very classy

although I feel a bit intimidated, she's really rather
welcoming as she shows me around the building

I try to pay close attention to her but find my mind
wandering back to images of her handsome brother,

to hopes for what very well might transpire between
he and me once we are alone behind closed doors

she smiles lightly in a knowing way when I stumble
distractedly over an answer to one of her acute questions

I blush as I smile back, and think: of course,
strong intuition does tend to run in families,

and I start to relax, as she must also sense
that I do genuinely care for him

AT TIDE'S EDGE (photomorph) & WHAT IS IT (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

WHAT IS IT

what is it in me
that simply won't leave this be?
what demands I respond
despite a well-earned hesitation,
to land gasping, a beached fish
no longer even bothering to flap in dismay
at this painfully familiar stranding:
exposed again ... and still unnoticed

[non-dream free verse poem (basically a tanka, two-liner, and monoku, sans line breaks between) based on thoughts I came out of sleep this morning already mulling over. Photomorph "At Tide's Edge" (5-28-16 006v5) by Roswila]

FAMILY PORTRAIT (photo) & THERE'S A BETTER WAY (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

THERE'S A BETTER WAY

there's a better way
to do this, handsome Maks* says,
father and baby
together can do it without
the aid of medication

like natural child birth, infant/Dad bonding
has become another province of doctors

one in which how things should go buries
the uniqueness of each parent/child pair

creating hosts of problems where only a rare few
would ever have surfaced without medicine

as proof, Maks introduces all to his toddler son,
a beaming, free-spirited talented little tyro

but the observers whisper: well, you know
how it goes with foreigners and their odd beliefs,

and how they only see what they want to,
not what's right in front of their eyes

[one tanka and a series of two-liners on a dream of 6-27-16. *Maks was one of the professional dancers on T.V.'s "Dancing With the Stars," who's Russian/American, and (IMHO) handsome and very outspoken. Photo "Family Portrait" (3-31-16 003v2a) by Roswila]

IGNITION (photomorph) & COMBUSTION (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

COMBUSTION

she says I should smell
her baby's breath, it's always the odor
of high octane fuel
I agree and now understand why
he races so through everything he does

and why the occasional explosion
when she tries to muffle his nature

but a racer, is a racer, maybe she'd do better
to find a way to enjoy riding along with him

rather than try to put out the combustion
that drives his changing body and inventive mind
