GENESIS OF A WORLD (photo art) & TRANSPORTED (three non-dream scifaiku) by Roswila

TRANSPORTED

blasts from the past
all those B.E.M.'s crowding
the transporters

abducted from
the transporter matrix
talk about stalking!

the transported house
arrives cross-country inside out
bug in the upgrade

[three non-dream scifaiku written in 2006, 2007, and 2008, respectively. This post is in memory of my brother, Russ, who passed away on December 28th. It was he who first introduced me to science fiction when he was about 11 years old, and I about 16. I did not take his interest in the genre seriously at first, but have been grateful to him ever since once I finally read a book. For anyone reading this who's not a Star Trek fan, a transporter is a far future way of virtually instantaneous travel, say, from the orbiting star ship to the planet surface. A sort of disassembling "here" and reassembling "there." B.E.M.'s = what the term "bug eyed monsters" got shortened to; used for the sorts of alien creatures that appeared in the science fiction movies and pulp magazines of the 50's. BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO DREAMKU (& PHOTOS):

But first, a request: please let me know of any typos or other sorts of blunders in my posts. As my eyes age I'm finding more mistakes are creeping into what I put up here no matter how many times I proof it all. Thanks for any help!

The dream-based poems posted on this blog -- dreamku, tanka, two-liners, monoku, free verse, dream narratives -- are offered in the spirit of collaboration. I have done my part. Now it’s your turn to jump in and see what comes up for you. I.e., there is no right or wrong way to relate to any of these dream offerings. Even my own understandings of them change over time. And it gives me joy when a reader sees something in any of them that I have not.

Also please note that a dream poem or narrative is not intended as an interpretation of a dream, or even a complete and accurate rendering of one. It is my attempt to get down dream imagery/action that grabs me and, as I write about it, elicits my conscious written association and response. Nor do I believe that one has to remember dreams in order for them to do their work. In my understanding, we are much more than our conscious selves.

You may also note in any further reading on dreamku (the specific forms of dreamku, tanka, two-liners and monoku) you may do here, that in the beginning I stressed "showing, not telling." However, this has been changing for some time. I now tend to "show" (the dream story) and cap if off with a "tell" (some reaction and/or insight I've had to the dream as I was writing about it). This also pretty much applies to my free verse dream poems as well. As to what I have begun calling dream narratives, they are a different animal, probably most akin to prose poems.

For more in-depth exploration of the dreamku forms specifically and one post in which I also address my photo choices:

A STICKY WICKET (photo art) & PLEASE RELEASE ME (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

PLEASE RELEASE ME

"Please release me, let me go ..."
reverberates in her mind
as she visits the doctor
to set up care for her sick friend

the doctor reasonably enough
points out he can't help much
in the absence of the patient,
but listens to her reasoning,
to her explanations of caring
and of the past experiences urging
her detailed anticipation of what
she needs to do for her friend

then to her surprise, even as
"Please release me..." rises again
like a soundtrack, the doctor gently
questions why she has to do anything,
sharing how he'd ultimately freed
himself from murky entanglements
with angry confrontation

it's as if a multitude of flash bulbs
goes off and she thinks" Yes! I don't
have to do this!" and better yet she sees
she doesn't even have to get angry
to make the break

she thanks the doctor for his time
and as she walks away, starts phrasing
in her mind how best to respectfully set
the boundaries she needs
with her sick friend,

releasing herself yet one more time
from the ancient snare of over-responsibility

[free verse poem on a dream of 1-9-14. The title and snatch of lyrics I heard in the dream are from the old Jim Reeves song "Please Release Me." There's a lot more to this dream than just the issue of over-responsibility (in 12 step program terms, care-taking and co-dependency). It would require a massively long dream poem to get all the implications in. And I think the portion of the dream's import that I attempt to share here is sufficient to this morning's writing session. Photo art "A Sticky Wicket" (12-24-13 010v8) by Roswila]

ANNOUNCING the premier edition of "cattails" online

The premier edition of Cattails (of the United Haiku & Tanka Society) is now online. It's filled with original haiku, senryu, haibun, and tanka, as well as resources, contests and competitions ... and more. (I'm delighted to have one of my haiku and senryu appear in it.) In short, I highly recommend this new offering to the world-wide community of those who enjoy reading, writing, sharing, and learning about "Japanese short form poetry."

I'll close with a (non-dream) haiku I wrote in the late 1980's and have since turned into a monoku (one line haiku):

beyond the rusty gate crocus shoots

PLEASE NOTE: in most browsers you can click on the above image for a larger version. Also, the photo accompanying a post is not necessarily meant to illustrate it, but to reflect some small, even slant aspect of the verse similar to Japanese haiga (illustrated haiku).

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers, as the above is), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

DUSTING OFF THE DAY (photo) & UNTIL THE MORROW (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

UNTIL THE MORROW
(stealing from Shakespeare)

out out damn dust!
don't seed this time of rest with pain
at least until the morrow
when tears may wash
what light in yonder window breaks
and truth slicing like a bare bodkin
shall then be welcome
(if such a pointed blade
were ever thus:
both true and welcomed)

[free verse poem begun in a dream of 1-7-14. I was fooling around with snatches of Shakespearian phrasing in my dream, attempting to couch the dream's insight in an appropriate dramatic way. As I did so in the dream the details of the insight got lost beneath the words. But I do recall a habitual denial of mine that the dream was revealing and how uncomfortable it made me feel to hear it. So much so, I guess, that I ultimately distanced myself in the dream by writing about my reaction to it rather than the insight itself. Photo "Dusting Off the Day" (1-20-10 19102e) by Roswila]

SYNAPTIC REVOLT (photo art) & JUST HOW (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

JUST HOW

just how the aliens from another planet
have succeeded in taking over Earth
is rather puzzling -- oh yes their ways
are strange and mental communication
to humans is instantaneous, but thinking
isn't even their preferred conceptual mode

the one they prefer? we don't know
or even if it's one we humans possess,
we only know we bear the burden
of their irresistible commands
as they gather us in for their admitted
murderous purposes, layered with the scorn
they express toward thinking, even as they
control us with thoughts ...
but we humans refuse to give up

so it is I climb staircase after staircase
for secret meetings with fellow rebels --
what was impossible for me before
the aliens' advent has now become
wonted: I simply breathe deep,
taking each step up in my arthritic stride,
as my preternaturally intelligent toddler
triplets straggle behind bellyaching
"Not another climb!"

and rising surely with me each time,
making me giddy, is how I know
in that non-thinking way lightly warming
the pit of my stomach, that these aliens
will lose and that their defeat
lies in what they most scorn:
our ability to think

BLACK & WHITE STUDY (photo) & THEY CANNOT HANDLE (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

THEY CANNOT HANDLE

they cannot handle all she brings to the table
and swiftly box her (neatly, it's true) with care
that she fit comfortably seated in her wing
back chair, but they box her nevertheless

at least they leave one side off so that she can
see out and others see in (should someone wish
to take a chance and more than glance her way,
eyes at half mast), then back her up with wands
she'd made herself and lavishly decorated
(after all, they're not totally thoughtless)

but even with all this containment (as if she
were radioactive) and the distance the box
creates, they cannot tolerate all her colors
and wash her out into plain black and white

and so she sits in an ivory lace gown
trimmed with black, like some fairy tale maid
imprisoned for an unforgiven crime
(if indeed there'd ever been one), weaving
technicolor songs out of nothing,
both her rescue and release
