COSMIC CARP (photo art) & KEEPING ONE'S WORD (3 dream tanka w/2 2-liners) by Roswila

KEEPING ONE'S WORD

just as she lowers
her tired butt in her recliner
her friend sticks his head
in the front door to inquire:
"Did you mail my collages?"

"Oh, no," she mutters,
"they're such a deal to pack up,
how will I do it?"
how indeed protect his old,
fragile but still lovely art

and not only that,
they're rather large, a couple
feet wide of looping
colors and shadows that shift
even as one peruses them

she finally settles on sandwiching them between
new, stronger collages of her own for mailing

a risk well worth taking, after all,
keeping one's word must still count for something

BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO DREAMKU (& PHOTOS):

But first, a request: please let me know of any typos or other sorts of blunders in my posts. As my eyes age I'm finding more mistakes are creeping into what I put up here no matter how many times I proof it all. Thanks for any help!

The dream-based poems posted on this blog -- dreamku, tanka, two-liners, monoku, free verse, dream narratives -- are offered in the spirit of collaboration. I have done my part. Now it’s your turn to jump in and see what comes up for you. I.e., there is no right or wrong way to relate to any of these dream offerings. Even my own understandings of them change over time. And it gives me joy when a reader sees something in any of them that I have not. (This all applies to any of the non-dream poems posted here, too.)

Also please note that a dream poem or narrative is not intended as an interpretation of a dream, or even a complete and accurate rendering of one. It is my attempt to get down dream imagery/action that grabs me and, as I write about it, elicits my conscious written association and response. Nor do I believe that one has to remember dreams in order for them to do their work. In my understanding, we are much more than our conscious selves.

You may also note in any further reading on dreamku (the specific forms of dreamku, tanka, two-liners and monoku) you may do here, that in the beginning I stressed "showing, not telling." However, this has been changing for some time. I now tend to "show" (the dream story) and cap if off with a "tell" (some reaction and/or insight I've had to the dream as I was writing about it). This also pretty much applies to my free verse dream poems as well. As to what I have begun calling dream narratives, they are a different animal, probably most akin to prose poems.

For more in-depth exploration of the dreamku forms specifically and one post in which I also address my photo choices:

ALL THINGS PASS (photo art) & GRIEF NOT BURIED (dream tanka & monoku) by Roswila

GRIEF NOT BURIED

our pet house mouse dies
miscarrying -- this time
no one sugar coats
death or tries to minimize
our doubled sense of loss

grief not buried invasive roots not grown

COCKSCOMB (photo art) & HENNY PENNIES (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

HENNY PENNIES

ooops! the boss's personalized version
of the communal computer program
has disappeared completely,
and I never got around to writing
the letter I'd promised,
verifying no mistakes were made
on its newest innovations

at least no one's pointing a finger
at me (yet) when by now I'd usually
have been called on the carpet
for it all, guilty or not
(I've never been able to get rid
of that KICK ME sign pinned
between my shoulder blades)

and what's with all this fuss anyway?
why all these Henny Pennies rushing
around, clacking and scratching
at everything and rolling
their eyes at the sky?

all other copies of the program CD
have arrived with everything on them,
their slipcases in deep shades
of green and shadowy blues,
rustling like the woods lining
an unknown mountain path

I'd say onward and upwards,
ye chickens! it's this small,
all too familiar backyard pen of fear
you're scrabbling around in
that's the real problem

[free verse poem on a dream of 5-19-14. Though I see a lot more here, this is basically a sort of tough love pep talk for myself. And in that regard, it's also a bit encouraging to note that I'm not blaming myself (yet, LOL). I also note the third reference in very recent poems to a mountain path. PLEASE NOTE: in most browsers you can click on the above image for a larger version. Also, the photo accompanying a post is not necessarily meant to illustrate it, but to reflect some small, even slant aspect of the verse, similar to Japanese haiga (illustrated haiku).

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers, as the above is), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

HEAT WAVE (photo art ) & ANOTHER SAD DREAM (tanka pair w/monoku) by Roswila

ANOTHER SAD DREAM

another sad dream
fresh from the oven of sleep,
if anything can
be said to be fresh after
all that tossing and turning

and which came first,
aching joints and twisted sheets?
or that footless man
who nevertheless managed
to trample all over me

a heavy act, but more for what was missing

LEAVINGS (photo art) & LESS LIKE THUNDER (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

LESS LIKE THUNDER

at the high end of the wooded
mountain path cyan blue
sky winks in tiny patches
from dark green shadows

the sound of a single footstep
suddenly stamps down
from two different directions
at once, less like thunder
than one slam of the door
unsought and forever

[free verse poem on a dream of 5-18-14. This dream uses some imagery similar to that in the non-dream poem I posted here on May 17, "Every Time." I also suspect that my neighbors were slamming doors again on their ways to breakfast. :-) However, external sensory input does not by any means "explain" this dream or where I let it lead me in the poem. WHERE HAVE ALL THE FLOWERS GONE (photo art) & BARE BONES (dream tanka series) by Roswila

BARE BONES

ah, flower colors
once rich gold and hot orange
now paled to pastels,
but it's their languid shapes most
calling to my camera

I frame and focus
a shot of these intriguing
tissue paper thin
petals, as they lie stretched out
on the ground as if on a chaise

a friend passes by
but I choose to make believe
I haven't seen her
these shapes deeply compel me
and I'd missed this shot once before

I don't even care
why these translucent curves call
in whispery waves,
what message they dryly drape:
their bare bones beauty fills me

[four tanka on a dream of 5-17-14. I said in comments to a recent non-dream poem of mine here that I think sometimes I'm even more interested in the image/thing itself than in its contents (meaning or interpretation). This dream seems to be pointed that way as well. Then there's the quote I read last night on my Zen calendar: "...Zen's the unsymbolization of the world and all the things in it." (Frederick Franck, artist) I seriously doubt I'll ever forego the search for meaning altogether. But it certainly is a relief and pleasure to have an image/thing/experience be sufficient unto itself once in a while. Photo art "Where Have All The Flowers Gone" (4-24-10 10006 ev3) by Roswila]
