WARRIOR WOMAN (photo) & VEHICLE (prose dream poem) by Roswila

VEHICLE

maybe it's his resemblance to Captain Jean Luc Picard*
of the Star Ship Enterprise that draws me to him
but more likely it's his artistic nature

as I watch this multi-talented, middle aged man rush about
putting up his newest art installation, I wonder which
of his many talents this show employs, even as I begin
to sense its content is entirely about how to advertise

at first I judge this an inappropriate application for art,
but then relent, as someone with a "multi-media mind"†
such as his must feel great inner pressure to ferry
his worlds to as many folk as possible, and art's a most
capacious, far reaching vehicle:

whichever talent he chooses to use at any given time
like a Trojan Horse, and his strange, often unwelcome
and always vaguely disturbing messages,
like the warriors hidden inside

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers, as the above is), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

CATAWAMPUS ROSE (photomorph) & THE FULL STORY (dream prose poem) by Roswila

THE FULL STORY

my father's written a book about my mother's death,
both a surprising exposure of ultimate responsibility
and a defense, a sort of non-murder whodunit
that's already been publicized though not yet
distributed or even in production; early scuttlebutt
has it that the book will be a blockbuster,
but I remain rather inexplicably detached
from all the fuss, just watching at an airy remove
as Dad walks purposefully through present day
New York City streets, to retrieve the only copy
of the manuscript as he senses he's got straightening
out to do in it, like a deck of playing cards askew
after 52 pick-up; yes, I think, the full story's
always a work in progress isn't it?

[prose poem (?) on a dream of 3-2-16. In the dream this was my actual father (who died when he was 66) and mother (deceased at 34). Too much to go into here, but the dream was heavily influenced by my recent research on ancestry.com and having sent in my DNA for analysis. Ultimately, though, I think it's the implications of the last line that are most important. BTW, about that question mark after calling this writing a prose poem ... well, I'm having that frequent difficulty I have with what to call what I've written on a dream. And as usual I'm waffling back and forth between some sort of poem and not a poem. Photomorph "Catawampus Rose" (3-3-16 002v9) by Roswila]

WATCH YOUR STEP (photo) & ON MY PLATE (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

WHAC-A-MOLE

a gift or a curse? skidding
and wobbling into my 73d year
I stumble upon that half
of our species called The Male

yeah, I'd thought I'd left them all behind
in my rush to retire from that crazy-
making intra-species business ...
hey, I'd retired from just about everything
else anyway so why not men also?

and here they are once again popping up ...
you know, like that silly arcade game
"Whac-a-mole"? quick, bop 'em on
their dear little heads before they spread
and undermine my comfortable
late life denial

yikes! there's another mole, uh, rather
male, better watch my step or I'll turn
an arthritic ankle, or worse make full
female display with dilated pupils
and flushing cheeks

what a pickle! but I suppose I could simply
stop kvetching and choose to be grateful
that I'm still around to play
this dizzying but delightful old game

THREADS OF MEMORY (photomorph) & KEEPING AN EAR OUT (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

KEEPING AN EAR OUT

it must be my stuffed
achy ear making listening
for dreams difficult,
only the faintest impressions
pulsing against memory

or did the dreams themselves turn
deaf ears to me, and run right by

BROKEN MOON (photomorph) & EVOLUTION OF AN IMAGE (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

EVOLUTION OF AN IMAGE

Trees in this dense wood are tall
and hung with vines that choke all light
as dark succeeds in seeping up my spine

I clutch for balance and collide
with bars I cannot see

Terror suspends me,
an infant cribbed in ebony

And then the dark caves in

I dig out slowly, sorting through the shards,
building out of and upon the ruins,
carefully painting all darkness a placid blue

But dark bleeds through

I am an abysmal cage, through which
an occasional cold wind blunders

[non-dream free verse poem written in 1984. I checked to see when I last posted this -- I knew I must have -- and found the year was 2006, and that I'd left out a line! (Guess my aging memory is not too far gone yet. Smile) When I re-inserted that line I also deleted the period at each line ending, and made one very minor word tweak. The periods felt distracting (as I mentioned in another really old poem I recently re-posted here). Yikes! I just recalled that the tree memory I begin the poem with was from when I was 12 years old. And I can still to this day clearly visualize those vine hung trees, and recall how anxious and unhappy I was as a 12 year old. Photomorph "Broken Moon" (11-24-15 053v3) by Roswila]

GOSSIP'S WAGES (photomorph) & HAPLESS (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

HAPLESS

for the second time in as many days
The Pope takes an angry stand
on a human rights issue,
a bunch of folk immediately excoriate
him for doing so, even though
Popes in the past were criticized
for not taking stands at critical
junctures in history

then there's the matter of The Pope's
new, very small home, that he ordered
be built in the service of thrift:
these same folk buzz negatively
about its location under an urban overpass
that might flood in storms, which would only
lead to expensive, periodic cleaning and repairs,
so much, they say, for his tightening
of the Papal belt

sad, is it not? how it seems to be
some folk's nature to leave
no good deed unturned,
flipped on its back and left there
to flap around in the hot sun of gossip
like a hapless sea turtle

[free verse poem on a dream of 2-28-16. As to the metaphor of The Pope: I'm not Catholic, but I do have a lot of respect for the current Pontiff. Photomorph "Gossip's Wages" (7-17-10 10004ev7) by Roswila]

DEFLATION (photomorph) & PUNCTURED (a dream) by Roswila

PUNCTURED

he doesn't know how to use a telephone book
and as I teach him about alphabetization
I lightly tease, saying how much bigger
New York City phone books are, and however
would he handle one of them

although he says nothing, I still feel jazzed
about helping him find a musical show or act
for which to audition, though here, too, he's
surprisingly unknowledgeable, even his
girlfriend hasn't a clue, yet they came
to this city precisely to pursue
his show biz dream

then when, to my happy but huge surprise,
he's accepted in the chorus of a show,
it's clear he doesn't even know how to sing,
how to support his breath in order
to project, or use the caverns of his mouth
and sinuses to round out the tone

as usual I can't really tell what he thinks or feels
about all he must learn, only a vague questioning
look flits across his carefully blank face,
but I take a shot and quickly reassure him
that technique becomes second nature after a while

and I can only hope so, because his "first nature"
is a puzzling one, rapidly becoming off-putting,
for even when he does say something in his
radically minimalist way, his affect is totally flat
offering no additional purchase on what
is going on, leaving me to wonder sadly
what punctured it so badly

[on a dream of 2-27-16. Beyond more fully taking in my own ignorance, I'm really going to be mulling over that ending image today. It was only implied by the dream, not explicit. But when it came up in the writing of this piece I felt more than a bit punctured/deflated by painful empathy. BTW, the dream scenario itself holds at least a couple of generations of history from my father's side as he and his parents were theatre people. I haven't yet begun to search on ancestry.com for info on his side of my family. I have next to nothing on my mother, so have been focusing on her line. But I suspect my father's side will be a rich one once I get to it. Photomorph "Deflation" (1-23-16 8522vb1) by Roswila]
