PAINTING WITH LIGHT & SHADOW (photomorph) & OLD FOOLS (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

OLD FOOLS

my new friend, a large, soft-bodied old
man at least as ancient as I am, smiles at me
as he hobbles by to sit at a table behind me;
I feel him tugging very lightly on my long
white, braided pony tail but try to stay focused
on the dinner table conversation where I am
until something tells me I’d better check out
just what he’s actually doing behind my back:
LOL! he’s dipped my braid in a large glass of
lemonade and is flapping it lightly in the air
as if preparing a brush to start a painting or
calligraphy stroke! I instantly grab my tail
from him and splatter him directly: “Take
that, you silly old rotter,” I say, thinking
with a burgeoning affection that there’s
truly nothing like a pair of old fools

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

WELLING UP (photomorph) & THE INJURY (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

THE INJURY

it’s a life-long reality others
have noted, and often teased her
about as a child: she bruises all too
readily, the vast majority of the time
barely recalling the bump or blow that
brings an angry blue face with its puffed
cheeks to the surface, to give way slowly
to a sad simpering purple, and lastly to
a sickly yellow, as if the outed injury
no longer has the stomach for a face-
off with this churning world

[non-dream free verse poem written 6-25-19. I’m not sure that the “she” voice works in the first two lines, but couldn’t find a way around using “she” or “I” somewhere in any of the several drafts of this little poem. And I had a strong feeling against using “I,” for some reason. BTW, I did do some research on easy bruising years ago but nothing was helpful (all I recall now is a need for extra vitamin C, which I’ve always taken anyway.) This was drafted on my third long walk in a week and a half. I’d missed how poems pop on these walks. And not only their popping, their quality: it seems to be at least a little bit better than what I’ve been producing for some time now. Maybe it has to do with improved circulation to my brain from all the exercise? And that’s only partly a joke. Photomorph “Welling Up” (9-27-17 v4) by Roswila]

GOOD FENCES ... (photo) & "horse shoes in a line ..." (non-dream haiku) by Roswila

horse shoes in a line
on a chain link fence: luck
hung out to dry

[non-dream haiku written 6-25-19. Caught this smile inducing sight as I began my third long walk in a week and a half (there’s a regular horse shoe game in our retirement community’s side field/lot). Making progress with the walks! The first two were a week apart, and this third was only two days after the previous one. Photo “Good Fences …” (11-9-17 006v4) by Roswila]

BURNING BUSH (photomorph) & "dirt erupting from..." (non-dream haiku) by Roswila

dirt erupting from
under the dandelion bush … ah!
gopher moving in

[non-dream haiku written 6-22-19. “Meh” as a haiku, IMHO. But it was a fun experience. Not only that, but it happened on my second long walk after over a year of none, on a day that had been predicted to be foggy but was sunny and just the right temperature (for chilly-willy me). I just now googled for “dandelion bush” and didn’t get any clear answer as to whether that’s what it was; only a couple pix that looked like what I saw. One of which was titled with the same question I have: a dandelion bush? BTW, it was a tremendously hard walk (mostly due to feeling exhausted). However, I expected this. I remember how it went when I first built up to long walks a couple of years ago. Took several weeks. So, I’m focusing on the joy of doing it – which is considerable -- and not its inevitable attendant difficulties. Hm, that could be a good approach to my life in general, ey? Listen for the joy, and mute the rest. Photomorph “Burning Bush” (8-5-09 4956v2a[3]) by Roswila]
