CROW HAVEN (photo) & THE INEFFABLE (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

THE INEFFABLE

it seems odd sometimes to turn to words
to express the ineffable, to fumble trying
to say what by-passes thought, running
wild through my body in an alternating
current of fear and delight, a demanding
and stimulating dialogue, like that one
just now between me and that agitated
crow as it paced me across the park from
tree to tree for all the world cawing
"Are we going to fly, you and me?"
my spirit and body responding
"Yes ... Ohhh, Yes! Yes!"

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

SYNCOPATED RHYTHM (photomorph) & POVERTY'S JUST FINE WITH ME (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

POVERTY'S JUST FINE WITH ME

he's a miner for a heart of gold*
but not for me that cold glittering ore,
give me the heat of a fleshly life

not for me a gilded perfection,
I seek a heart that proudly shares
its unique beat, syncopated or stretched,
wild or calm, and awash with messy life

not for me the teasing of gold,
with its wealth of slick promises,
poverty's just fine as far as I'm concerned,
especially when the rhythm's right on
and hot

FULL CONTAINMENT (photomorph) & WHERE THERE'S SMOKE (non-dream tanka) by Roswila

WHERE THERE'S SMOKE

waking from a nap
to an overheated room:
dreams curl away from
memory like the wildfire smoke
above the distant mountains

[non-dream tanka written 12-17-17. BTW, they're now saying full containment of the Thomas wildfire will be by January 7; it's at 50% containment at present. We here in Goleta/Isla Vista are still very fortunate. But all remains to be seen when the winds pick up again sometime tomorrow. Photomorph "Full Containment" (6-12-16 001v2w) by Roswila]

WHICH WAY HOME? (photo) & THE LITTLE ENGINE (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

THE LITTLE ENGINE*

even as she goes about her work
she worries at the thought like
a bone: why is she moving out?
and there's no doubt this is what
she's doing, body and spirit going
straight ahead dismantling and then
packing item after item; as if rolling
steadily down hill there's no
stopping it, no matter her mind
natters on, worrying, worrying:
why?! she doesn't even know
where she's moving to and there's
so little time! this much she's
quite clear on, the task of packing
would be humongous under any
conditions, but at this late time
when transport for everything's
about to arrive, it's nigh on to
impossible; but her spirit and body
impel her steady progress as if it
were the most sensible, nay even
natural thing to be doing; she
laughs to herself as she lifts a
thick sheaf of her photos and
poems and drawings: her poor
mind now trails behind like
the little engine that could, not
yet realizing it's no longer
pulling this train

[free verse poem on a dream of 12-17-17. * This title and the ending reference in the poem is from "The Little Engine That Could", a children's story, in which the little engine repeats "I think I can, I think I can" and accomplishes a thoroughly daunting task. Yes, I was quite puzzled by this dream on recalling it. But the more I worked on the poem about it, the more I realized it's actually quite positive. New engines (body and spirit) are taking me to a new place. The anxious engine of the mind got me this far, which was a tremendous, difficult haul. But time to let different engines move me ahead to a new place. And "moving" -- in my waking life -- I am doing, surprising and even scaring myself, but oh so excited to be doing so. TRYING TO HOLD UP THE SKY (photomorph) & INTO THE THIRD WEEK OF THE THOMAS WILDFIRE (non-dream tanka) by Roswila

INTO THE THIRD WEEK
OF THE THOMAS WILDFIRE

on T.V., water's
dropped in buckets from the sky
by helicopters --
out the window, smoke over Isla Vista,
echoing New York City skies on 911

[non-dream tanka written 12-17-17. As I've mentioned here before, I was living in NYC at the time of the fall of the Twin Towers. I've been here in CA for 10 years and each wildfire that fills our skies with sickly colored smoke takes me back to that day, and the days after.
