GRANT PARK, CHICAGO, NOVEMBER 4, 2008, poem by Ginny Wells

Image from Daily Mandala

GRANT PARK, CHICAGO , NOVEMBER 4, 2008

Wave on wave they come--

Those who answered the call,

Rang doorbells,

Gave money,

Gathered the dreamers

From all points,

Organized,

Made videos,

Sent emails,

Until it seems

Victory is assured

For their candidate--

They fill the park

To overflowing,

Watching giant televisions

For latest numbers,

Standing for hours

Without complaint,

A sea of beatific smiles.

One state following another

Going their way.

Happiness grows

Until finally there are enough

Votes to claim Obama

The Next President of the United States !

Their work has transformed

A dream into actuality.

Their faith has made manifest

All their hopes.

Now the man himself appears

To the sounds of cheers

Unfurling like a flag in the breeze.

Smiling, waving, strong,

He expresses gratefulness

To all who have made this possible

Then speaks of the tasks ahead

And the crowd is hushed.

Around the president-elect

In the misty light

An aura of another man

Appears.

Tall, bearded, brooding,

Smiling.

This poem is by Virginia Wells, whose poetry I've posted here before:

The Glass Screen, & Aphrodite

Jim -- Last Spring, & Beginnings

I had intended to post the above Obama poem sooner, but life has a way of intefering while we're making other plans. :-) But I don't think there's any danger that the amazement of this election will wear off anytime soon. And isn't that ending image simply wonderful!

THOMAS MERTON QUOTE

"Then it was as if I suddenly saw the secret beauty of their hearts, the depths of their hearts where neither sin nor desire nor self-knowledge can reach, the core of their reality, the person that each one is in God's eyes. If only they could see themselves as they really are. If only we could see each other that way all the time, there would be no more war, no more hatred, no more cruelty, no more greed... I suppose the big problem would be that we would fall down and worship each other."

- Thomas Merton
