FOR CRYIN' OUT LOUD... (Cartoon)

["For cryin' out loud, let go of the stick!"]

I don't even remember how old this cartoon is. This is an umpteenth generation xerox of it, the original clipped cartoon long since having crumbled to dust. It's been on my refrigerator in this apartment for many years. Recently I've been noticing it a lot and laughing, as it's how I've been feeling even more than ever. That is, what good is all my awareness (extra-sensory and otherwise) when all I do with it is cling to it? When is it time to let go and do something with what I know? But dare I let go as what unknown might I now be dangling above? Maybe posting this cartoon will help end the suspense. LOL!

For those not familiar with dowsing, which is what this cartoon is poking fun at, its an "Occult practice used for finding water, minerals, or other hidden substances. A dowser generally uses a Y-shaped piece of hazel, rowan, or willow wood (also called a dowser or a divining rod). The dowser grasps the rod by its two prongs and appears, while walking, to be receiving transmissions from beneath the earth. If the rod quivers violently or points downward, some buried substance has been located. First practiced in Europe during the Middle Ages, dowsing is most often used to find water but may also be employed to locate precious metals, buried treasure, archaeological remains, or even dead bodies." TANKA: Response to One Deep Breath Prompt of 4/16/07

knees weakened
by the horrendous news
of the massacre:
the instinct
to pray

One Deep Breath's prompt this week is to think about the potential energy (or lack thereof) around/in us. The horrible tragedy at Virginia Tech University early this Monday morning is much with me, as it is with us all. When I heard the news report, I could barely stand before my T.V., weak and stunned. My prayers are with all those effected by this terrible tragedy.

P.S. A few hours after posting the above I began to wonder why the reports of deaths in Iraq do not impact me in quite the same way. Not that I am not deeply saddened by them. I am. But is it the level of awful familiarity that buffers those statistics? I have no answer. Only the painful question.

A DREAMKU, & A PROBLEM WITH ENDINGS (Poem)

Mandala courtesy of Zodiac Arts

A PROBLEM WITH ENDINGS

She tried again to explain her problem with
my poem’s ending, “Too pointed,” she said.

Years later a friend takes a different tack
“Let the opening image have its head,”
gently making that point I’d come to dread.

Today I see what they were saying as
I sail through poems by many others,
wincing when the occasional pointed
ending nails a vital image to the pier.

Here, hop on and release that mooring line....

The dreamku and the dream it's based on are several weeks old. The poem I wrote a couple days ago. I was not thinking at all about the dream/dreamku when drafting the poem. But once completed, the poem opened the dream a bit more for me. Unfortunately, my mood today has me "nailed to the pier." Maybe it's that NorEaster that's on the way. Yes, I'll blame it on the weather. :-)
