A TORRENT OF STARS (photomorph) & THE ADVENTURE (dream narrative) by Roswila

THE ADVENTURE

my father's driving us along the east coast
after a storm: the weather's cleared nicely
but we hear the main road of the small seaside
town we're headed toward has either washed
out or has a mudslide across it

as we approach the town my father wonders
out loud which of two roads to take to skirt the main
road's outage; I stare out the car window, watching
the thick green deciduous trees bob in the post-storm
breezes and suggest he just go with the one we usually
take, the right hand one that the truckers
and we always use

though which one we take doesn't really matter;
neither of us recalls anymore where in the town we're
headed or even why we're on this trip to begin with,
and any washed out or mud buried road will be
a further surprise, an adventure: there's no way
to figure out ahead of time
how to go around it

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

SWIZZLE STICK (photomorph) & MILLE FIORI (dream narrative) by Roswila

MILLE FIORI

on the counter of the new shopping mall
rests a profusion of mille fiori:
tiny individual yellow daisy* flowers
on the end of black stems, each about
the size of a swizzle stick or a lady's
hat pin, but surprisingly flexible, not
the usual hard glass -- they fascinate me,
drawing the salesman to come over and wait
quietly to see if he can be of service; now
I have something else to fascinate me -- him:
stocky and bright eyed, rather too young
for me, but that's not to say I can't enjoy
the interaction anyway; he's rather laid back
which makes me a little nonplussed since he
is in sales, but just as I open my mouth
to inquire as to the price of one of these
sweet mille fiori, he starts telling me
in great detail about how they are made
and I begin to feel his interest is in me,
as much as any sale he might make; I'm quite
surprised to know that these tiny daisy sticks
are edible, and once digested their component
chemicals spread softly outward from where
they wind up in the brain; he then shows me
an illustration of this: it resembles
an impressive inkblot in pastel aqua, yellow,
and pink: like a water color painting, I think,
a biological work of art, lighting up the brain,
even as my own brain must be lit up like a neon
sign, seeing his clearly flirtatious smile as he
gallantly hands me one of the mille fiori, saying,
here, for you it's free

[narrative on a dream of 8-2-17. *Symbolism of daisies, basically daises are said to represent innocence, purity, and true love. Awww! Talk about a wish fulfillment dream! BTW, daisies are actually edible (and can be used medicinally for various ailments). I may very well have known all this in decades past when I was very interested in herbalism, but if I did I'd totally forgotten all this lore until googling daises with respect to this dream. This is an aspect of our dreams I really like and find helpful: how it can resurface the consciously forgotten. Photomorph "Swizzle Stick" (6-20-16 012v3) by Roswila]

SPLASH! (photomorph) & THE SLIDE (dream narrative) by Roswila

THE SLIDE

the adolescent girl and I ride at break neck speed down
the long steep water slide; it's clear that stopping's
going to be an issue: no brakes exist for our
separate rushes to the bottom of this wet
ride; she reaches the end first and much
to my relief manages to come to a full
stop employing only a minor crash
that tumbles her lightly,
ass-over-tea-kettle;
I come up behind her at a speed
that brooks no slowing, and any
crash I might use to brake will
not only hurt but make a mess
of the white gate that stands at
the end of this water slide ride,
not to mention of me;
I make a wide
left-hand turn as I curve
into the course's end, hoping
this might slow my too rapid
approach a bit, but to no avail,
my own ass-over-tea-kettle
ending goes on in roll after
roll, bouncing me off
the gate
and
rattling it loudly several times,
but at least I'm able to steer
clear of a collision
with the girl,
who's
rather amused at my braking style;
then,
even though we're still
way too wet behind the ears,
we start rehearsing the show tunes
we're to perform later on, each of us
doing ourselves prouder with our heart
felt renditions of a series of favorite old
songs, than with our messy endings
to this break neck slide down hill

[narrative on a dream of 8-1-17. Why these line breaks? More and more, I'm bored with how a poem or narrative looks on the page/screen. This one was particularly difficult to get the lines in any sort of pleasing shape. So I decided to go further out than usual with my experimenting. And still at least vaguely hint at/support the content's action. Photomorph "Splash!" (8-1-17 002v2e) by Roswila]

WILLOW BY MOONLIGHT (photomorph) & SEPARATION (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

SEPARATION

the only real difference is directions:

the white haired Eloi* are irresistibly called
to feed the blanched bodies of the secretive
Morlock in their lightless underground caverns,
meeting the ravenous hunger that comes
with separation

while the lying gibbous moon inexorably
drags me by all I bear that's still unconscious
and unmet under my own colorless
skin,** into the sky to satisfy
its horrendous appetite

until it grows to full size, to leer down
at the constantly renewing earth
like a dirty old man still seeking
his visual jollies

[free verse poem on a dream of 8-1-17. *Eloi: half of the human race -- the Morlocks being the other half -- in the far future of the short story The Time Machine" by H.G. Wells that was made into three different movies over the years. **I have no pigment left in my skin. A condition called vitiligo. It's not common to lose it all over one's body, but I have. The in between phases were odd looking, but for a great many years I've just looked like someone with a very fair complexion. BTW, the gibbous moon image comes out of the PMS (pre-moon syndrome) I suffer, that I've mentioned here many times: I get crazy/wonky, to one degree or other, under the waxing gibbous moon phase. Which is the phase of the moon right now (it'll be full on the 7th, when I'll start to feel a bit better). Photomorph "Willow by Moonlight" (8-1-17 003v2e) by Roswila]

STEALING MY BREATH AWAY (photo) & THIS SHADOW (dream narrative) by Roswila

THIS SHADOW

Captain Picard* has taken a job as a CEO
and I'm now his Administrative Assistant;
my massive crush on him has only grown
over the years and I decide it's about time
I not wimp out and instead let him know
I am totally warm for his form

I slip a carefully composed brief letter to him,
outing my affection and desire, in with office
memos he'd dictated to me earlier and the mail
I'd opened and made notes on for him to peruse

before I place the full folder on the corner
of his large, dark wood desk, I take one last
look at my declaration of desire to be sure
there are no grammatical errors or typos;
as I do I see an irritating female co-worker
has slipped in a note to him, piggy backing
bluntly on mine: she's hastily scribbled
"I want to sleep with you, too," marring
my carefully composed and typed note

will I ever shake this shadow, this woman
who keeps trying to steal my life?

DISCONNECT (photo) & THREE (dreams based free verse poem) by Roswila

THREE

groups of three keep invading the night's dreams
as they have the previous several evening's sleep;
some consisting of a trio of objects, others of people,
and all attention grabbing and annoyingly so as they
pull my awareness from the dream currently playing
out; and, hell, I have never done well with numbers,
they don't add up properly, and their significance --
especially the number three! -- tends to the painful;
yeah, just think of the Three of Swords in the Tarot
(it's most common glyph is a heart pierced by three
swords), or the classically torturous love triangle
(a man at the apex who won't make up his mind),
or the Freudian Oedipal complex (father, mother,
and child -- need I say more?); I desperately want
to shoot this threnody of threes and all the others
flying about, out of the air of my dreams, nay,
out of the skies of my entire waking life as well,
like the flapping squawking alien birds they are,
before they can land to build their tangled,
thorny nests in my heart again

BIRTHING HUT (photomorph) & LABOR (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

LABOR

writing poetry taught me how to hear
the variegated rhythms informing language

taking photos gave me the vision to inquire
beyond the mask of the obvious

but it's this intense advent of loving him,
straight, with nothing watering it down,

no understandings or promises, nor even
physical expression between us

(no matter how this all might be yearned for)
that has brought me to this naked struggle

found only once before -- in the contracting
birth canal -- and forgotten until now:

this labor of love
