THE GROWL (photomorph) & ...AGAIN! (dream narrative) by Roswila

...AGAIN!

my brother (as an adult, at least in years)
brings home what he claims is a scrawny
stray cat, then I see from a (fortunately) safe
distance that he's mistaken a raccoon for a cat!
yowza! we gotta get it outta the house!

I rush around, staying as far away as possible from
the raccoon while I (as usual, doing by myself
what others should be helping with) try to shoo it
down the stairs and out of the house

the spooked raccoon then turns on a dime,
running at me at a frightening full tilt, and I see it's
really a large, whitish, heavily muscled dog, maybe
a bull/great dane mix ... yikes! am I relieved when it
scrambles down the stairs, and out

but, what is this? a "ground hog day" dream?*
I'm back to having to shoo the same dog --
which is now at the head of a pack of smaller but
equally scary dogs -- down those same damn stairs
... again!

the scrabbling of claws on the linoleum-covered
treads reaches a screeching level, but no worse
than what strains against the constricted
muscles of my throat

will I ever get rid of these slobbering
hounds from hell?!?!?

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

THE LONG FALL FROM THE SUN (photomorph) & ON CERVANTES ROAD (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

ON CERVANTES ROAD

a woman's laughter radiates from behind
the high bushes as I roll by with my walker;
dry leaves and dying fuchsia blossoms
fall, released from suspense by the wind;
one pale pink bloom that would have been
a shocking red only days ago, lands on
the left shoulder of my black blouse
like a butterfly; the woman whose laugh
touched me emerges into the sunlight;
we smile in greeting as the faded bloom
flies from my shoulder on a sustained
breeze; we watch together in silence
as it joins the other dying blossoms
tumbling through their transformations

AT THE EDGE OF HER WORLD (photo) & LONG TIME COMING (dream narrative) by Roswila

LONG TIME COMING

what a long time coming!
but we finally hook up;
a mutual friend finds out about
what feels so right to me
and calls me aside:
you do know what he's in to,
don't you? our friend whispers,
a concerned look shadowing
her usually bright face

no, I don't, and am rather worried
it has to do with my brand new lover's
health given a recent topic of
discussion around the dinner
table had been about folk living
with life threatening conditions

but before I can even say anything
out loud to our mutual friend,
I'm assaulted by intense
telepathic images, loaded
with information

it's as if I'm watching a movie
about and by my new lover, he
doing the voice-over: I thought I
could just let it fade away, he says,
resignation and sorrow coloring
his voice, I really believed I could just
let it fall apart, he adds, un-lived in,
un-used, but it seems I'm going to have
to take up residence again, live
it out all alone

as if I were looking through a camera,
the view pans out to encompass a wide
empty prairie with yellowed grasses
bending in a sere wind

then the view slowly zooms back in on
a low sloping hill with a rustic dark red
farm house, next to which stands a huge
barn painted the same deep red:
in the hot afternoon light it's clear
that despite having been deserted a long
time, the buildings are in good repair *

at least he'll be comfortable
in his isolation, I think,
as my grief for him
and for me, sets in

[narrative on a dream of 6-20-17. *On waking recall this prairie farmstead setting immediately put me in mind of the famous painting by Andrew Wyeth, Christina's World, in which a handicapped woman is sitting/crawling across the grass toward the home on the hill. Even before I ever knew she was handicapped, what I took to be her yearning and struggle moved me intensely. I'm still working out what this dream is saying; it's one of those more than usually multi-leveled ones. To mention only one of those levels, the figure returning to isolation is myself right now, while at the same time, expresses a concern I have for someone in my waking life. WHITTLING AWAY THE NIGHT (photomorph) & WHAT IMMENSITY (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

WHAT IMMENSITY

dried and yellowed willow leaves
litter grass, sidewalk, and street
like wood shavings,
as more crisp crescents fall:
what immensity
is being whittled into shape
in the over-hanging shadows?

ROLLIN' ON (photomorph) & ROLLING BY (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

ROLLING BY

beyond the white lace
curtaining the night:
the distant surf of spinning
tires on tarmac

and I imagine the old moon, too,
rolling by above this dead calm
of sleeplessness

new spin after new spin
rising then passing

regular
as a heartbeat,
ephemeral
as cotton candy

[non-dream free verse poem written Jan. 2011; revised 11-13, & 6-17. This has probably appeared here in one of it's earlier versions (under a different title). But it's now finally whipped into shape. At least I think so, given I sometimes edit poems many years after writing them. Witness this one. :-) Photomorph "Rollin' On" (6-4-17 006v2i) by Roswila]

COALESCENCE (photomorph) & Y IS A CROOKED LETTER (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

Y IS A CROOKED LETTER

"Why?!" I keep asking the universe
(I gave up asking humans a long time ago)
"Why?!" But the only answer I receive today
from that mysterious and overwhelming beyond
is the same one my poor beleaguered father
would give to my peppering of why's:
"Y is a crooked letter,"
leaving me feeling embarrassed and dumb
just the way Dad's response always did,
as if like radio waves his silly answer
to my serious inquiry had beamed away
across the light years, to wait crouching
in ambush in a slowly coalescing swirl
for me to trundle by today
and bark my shins on

[non-dream free verse poem written 6-11-17. Didn't even think of it being Father's Day when I chose this poem to edit and post. So it's a sort of odd but nevertheless loving remembrance of my Dad. I also had not recalled it's Father's Day as I was working on the photo for today, but now note it's dominant color is royal blue -- his favorite color: Photomorph "Coalescence" (4-19-17 001v3d) by Roswila; BTW, you might want to click on the pic to see it in a larger version, it has lots of detail]
