WHAT SHADOWS WOULD HIDE (photo) & THE TASK (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

THE TASK

what's this long estranged
woman friend doing in my dream?
and why's she leaving
that lengthy thin black electric
cord lying on the grey carpet

yeah, there, snaking out
from under the end table
like a slim warning
"Don't Tread On Me" or risk
taking a sudden face plant

and why am I getting down on my arthritic knees
to push its snarly presence back against the wall

there are healthier knees around that could bend
to wrangle this messy cord out of everyone's way

ah well, it seems it's not who's ideally suited
to an urgent task, but who sees that it needs doing

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers, as the above is), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

FOSSIL IN PINK (photomorph) & THE TEMP (dream narrative) by Roswila

THE TEMP

she's really needed a job and now finally has one:
"baby sitting" for a bright pink, paisley print,
1950's convertible at the filming of a T.V. commercial;
what an easy job, too, she thinks, as a car has no mind
of its own so can't help but do what it's told,
meaning she won't be required to do more
than stand by and watch the filming

what she doesn't know: her temporary agency's also
hired a guy in a black leather jacket to steal the pink
convertible away; this will prove to the film studio exec's
that hiring baby sitters is an on-going necessity;
and, therefore, despite her best and frantic efforts
the black leather guy takes off with the pink baby, leaving
her mortified, her first job in months and she's messed up

what she also doesn't know: the studio exec's are delighted
with the film they got of the thievery, "like Keystone Cops"
they say, and pat themselves on their backs for having set up
the Temporary Agency; an unscripted, unrehearsed chase
always has such energy and, of course, reality to it

and the last and most important unknown: there's no way
ever to succeed in doing the work as one understands it
for it's always a multi-level set up; the best one can do
is attempt the work as one sees it, and enjoy the ensuing chase

SEEKING CONTACT (photomorph) & TWICE (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

TWICE

she's obviously
deeply worried about something,
her young brow furrowed
as she stares at the puzzle
made by her wringing hands

it's quite a relief
when she finally whispers (as if
it would be her fault
if it did) "But it can't happen
all over again, can it?"

going on to say
she'd just established a soul
connection to him
and to lose him all over again
would be far too much to bear

I'm all too quick to reassure her that it won't
happen to him another time: no one dies twice

BRANCHING OUT (photo) & BRACHIATING (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

BRACHIATING

which way to go now
the rocks to the left and right
nigh on to boulders
and straight ahead
far below the cliff edge
a wide heavily tree lined lake

grasping one of the many
tree branches the easiest
part of the journey so far
not only does it prove strong
but greatly flexible
swinging in long arcs

only worry about grasping
this branch long enough
for just the right arc
toward the far shore
and then the short letting go
onto land again
brings on these tears

yes, that must be it
for it's been said
that the human brain
uses an ancient area
for language that it once used
for navigating
arm over arm
through the trees*

and this speech
is joyful is it not?
a dunk in the lake avoided
the maze of impossible rocks
left behind

and this holding on
dangling in a wide
and gentle swaying
like a bell's clapper
against its lip
certainly
not that of sobbing

of grieving
the always sought
but never found
home

FOLLOWING THE PATTERN (photo) & LOST SHEEP (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

LOST SHEEP

Little Bo Peep has lost her sheep ...
or at least the sure footed ewe
who leads all her dreams
into the gated green pasture
of morning recall

one can only imagine them all
wandering aimlessly about
in the borderless wilds,
not even conscious enough
to know that they're lost

BREAKING THE SURFACE (photomorph) & HIEROPHANY (non-dream poem) by Roswila

HIEROPHANY

A curved black shape sheds water,
obscuring my excitement:
no whale here, only
the murky outline
of an off-shore rock

But by what am I
then briefly clarified
as it watches this world through me,
warm and alert inside my skin,
pressing outward against my roundness
as if I were an old bay window

[non-dream poem written in the mid-1980's, revised many times in the ensuing years. I've been going through all my paper copy file folders which are almost entirely filled with really old, uncomputerized work. I've been making an index by title, along with brief notes following it, so that I can more readily find individual "oldsters." They're filed by title and all too often I've forgotten what that is. I also wanted an idea of what each poem is about so when I'm searching for a poem on a particular subject or issue for here, or for reading in our community's talent show, I'll have an easier time of it. In this process, of course, I'm reading work I'd all but forgotten about, and finding edits I want to make, or a messy copy I want to replace with a couple clean ones after entering on the computer. All of this was true for "Hierophany." Photomorph "Breaking the Surface" (10-7-15 v5c) by Roswila]

FROM SHADOW (photo) & "Thank you..." (dream tanka) by Roswila

“Thank you for coming,”
she herds me out of her house --
where are my shoes?
a mouse-bug skitters quickly
through the deep shadows

[dream tanka written & first posted in October 2008. I'm choosing to put up a sort of Halloween-like dream tanka simply because I had such a great time at our retirement community's costume party last night. I.e., I want to stretch out that rare high mood for a bit. Not only did I dance for the entire party (kinda, sorta, mostly from my arthritic knees up, standing in place, :-D) but also won first place for my costume. All while enjoying all the other great costumes, and being social in a relaxed fun way. Photo "From Shadow" (10-24-15 011v5) by Roswila]
