BAD NEWS (photomorph) & FALLOUT (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

FALLOUT

he's very polite
as he tells me the bad news:
the department store's
going to sue me even
though I'd not made the charge

and despite the fact the account's long closed
"It's just a matter of policy," he says

he has no answers
for any of my ensuing
questions that explode
down the old fashioned line
from my clunky ancient black phone:

how did she get away with it! and how,
pray tell, do they know who she is!

but he does listen
as long as I keep bursting,
honest sympathy
reaching me in place of
the knowledge I crave

and then I see:
too often it's only under fallout
that one is heard at all

[three tanka interspersed with two-liners and capped by a dreamku on a dream of 10-31-14. Photomorph "Bad News" (10-7-14 009v3e) by Roswila]

BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO DREAMKU (& PHOTOS):

But first, a request: please let me know of any typos or other sorts of blunders in my posts. As my eyes age I'm finding more mistakes are creeping into what I put up here no matter how many times I proof it all. Thanks for any help!

The dream-based poems posted on this blog -- dreamku, tanka, two-liners, monoku, free verse, dream narratives -- are offered in the spirit of collaboration. I have done my part. Now it’s your turn to jump in and see what comes up for you. I.e., there is no right or wrong way to relate to any of these dream offerings. Even my own understandings of them change over time. And it gives me joy when a reader sees something in any of them that I have not. (This all applies to any of the non-dream poems posted here, too.)

Also please note that a dream poem or narrative is not intended as an interpretation of a dream, or even a complete and accurate rendering of one. It is my attempt to get down dream imagery/action that grabs me and, as I write about it, elicits my conscious written association and response. Nor do I believe that one has to remember dreams in order for them to do their work. In my understanding, we are much more than our conscious selves.

You may also note in any further reading on dreamku (the specific forms of dreamku, tanka, two-liners and monoku) you may do here, that in the beginning I stressed "showing, not telling." However, this has been changing for some time. I now tend to "show" (the dream story) and cap if off with a "tell" (some reaction and/or insight I've had to the dream as I was writing about it). This also pretty much applies to my free verse dream poems as well. As to what I have begun calling dream narratives, they are a different animal, probably most akin to prose poems.

THE WAY OF WATER (photomorph) & FISHY THINGS (dream tanka series) by Roswila

FISHY THINGS

my aquarium's
over crowded -- not with fish,
but with objects,
castles and ferns, colorful
various size rocks

the few guppies swim
around almost forlornly
as if ungrounded,
as if searching for a clear
patch of sand on which to land

a young passerby
comments over his shoulder that
they'll never hatch eggs
they need much more open sand
in which to lay their ova

even the smallest
fishy things need a lot of space
to incubate in
or they simply float away
in the watery landscape

[tanka series on a dream of 10-30-14. I'm not sure this one comes across. It depends on that idiomatic use of "fishy" as something not totally to be trusted. In this case, not trusting (believing) everything one feels/thinks. I spent quite a bit of time trying to make the point more apparent in the early drafts. But couldn't do it in a poetic/suggestive, as opposed to obvious, way. So I'm leaving it be, even with my doubts about it's clarity. Photomorph "The Way of Water" (10-15-14 024v12a) by Roswila. And, in a totally different vein, I hope you have a HAPPY HALLOWEEN/BLESSED SAMHAIN!]

THE CONVERSATION (photo) & THE FACE-OFF (dream tanka capped by a dreamku) by Roswila

THE FACE-OFF

in the crowded aisle
of the new supermarket
she spies hoards of ghosts:
soap opera characters
ensouled by sugary shades

she forces a grin
and clings to her empty box
food aisle face-off

[tanka capped by a dreamku; dreamed, written, and posted in May of 2008. I've revised this for re-posting today. What drew me to it is how like Halloween it is. And, of course, how my haunts these days are still occasionally those of food. Especially during Halloween week with all the candy lying around! On the other hand, I almost decided not to post it. Not wanting to risk stimulating those old cravings. (Did I mention? I've now lost 76 lbs. at last weigh in almost a month ago. So it's most probably a couple pounds more than that by now.) BEYOND REPAIR (photomorph) & GLASS WORK (dream tanka trio) by Roswila

GLASS WORK

he lifts the panel
of glass aside so we can all
get on the terrace
he places it thoughtlessly
leaving it to wobble badly

it's quite a stretch
but she manages to grab hold
of the large glass sheet
to keep it from hitting the tile floor
even as she yells out for help

no one responds
each looks away on passing by
and she's left again
holding the bag for an imminent
shattering they're blithely ignoring

[three tanka on a dream of 7-25-14. I've had this dream poem on the back burner for months, very unsure how I feel about it. Not the writing, but the content. It might be just a little too transparent (like that sheet of glass). I'm accustomed to a certain level of exposure in sharing my dream poems, but this one may go further. I certainly catch of whiff of self-pity wafting from it. However, nothing ventured, nothing gained, so I thought I'd post it today. It's the season to let things go and look to fresh starts. (Halloween in the ancient Celtic tradition is New Year's.) Hm, I just noted that the photomorph of mine I've chosen to go with it is called "Beyond Repair" (4-7-12 11647v2c). Maybe the ultimate point of the dream was that what the glass represents is already broken/unfixable and to let it go.]

A TALL TALE (photo) & A CERTAIN COZINESS (dream tanka pair) by Roswila

A CERTAIN COZINESS

it barely registers
that my friend's been deceased
these many years,
yet how readily she's made
a new friend stirs my envy

the great difference
in their heights only adds
a certain coziness
my friend bending like a giraffe
to drink in her new friend's smile

REACHING FOR THE MOON (photomorph) & ON YEARNING (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

ON YEARNING

"Full moon and empty arms..."
the old song echos as I worry

carry six horses?
how can I hold on to these
shetlands I've plucked
from earth's satellite, that shine
and cast silver blue shadows

not when my arms burn from the effort
and the moon frowns mournfully down

full arms ... and empty moon ...
some yearnings are better left unsatisfied

[a two-liner, a tanka, and a pair of two-liners on a dream of 10-26-14. The first line is from the 1945 song by Kay/Mossman, based on Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2. I found myself singing/humming it most of the night (before, after, during this dream, and every time I woke). I'd just heard it yesterday on The Lawrence Welk Show. Yes, I blush to admit I sometimes tune into it on PBS. I like hearing the old familiar songs. Guess that's another symptom of advancing old age. I suppose I should also mention again my life long love of horses. Photomorph "Reaching for the Moon" (10-24-14 015v14) by Roswila]
