BELLY DANCER (photo) & "the weeping willow's ..." (non-dream haiku) by Roswila

the weeping willow's
shadows drape its furrowed trunk
a soothing sadness

[haiku written 1-27-17. Published in Waterways (online archives), March 2017. Photo "Belly Dancer" (3-25-17 010v2) by Roswila, taken of the tree under which the above haiku was written, on a sunnier day and in a sunnier mood]

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

NO WAY OUT (photo) & THE 100 YEAR CURSE (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

THE 100 YEAR CURSE

sleeping beauty had it easy, man!

lying on the other side of all those
overgrown bramble bushes hiding
her castle, as she slept away
the 100 year wait for the dark fairy's
curse to end and for her prince
to arrive, all the while not aging
even one day

unlike me, doomed to wander awake,
hemmed in by this endless
wall of thorn bushes, all too aware
that should I out live this 100
year curse, I'll be way too
old and broken for even the most
generous spirited prince of a man
to do more than take passing note
of this hobbling old hag
whose resemblance to a witch
has always gone quite a bit more
than skin deep

[non-dream free verse poem written 3-4-17. Yeah, can you say self pity, children? I've had this one ready for posting for some time and just have not liked it's tone. Although it is a place I go to all too often. As today, so it's the perfect post. Photo "No Way Out" (1-13-11 10339v5) by Roswila]

SOAKING UP THE NIGHT (photo) & WALKING ON (dream based mixed format poem) by Roswila

WALKING ON

we employees have
not been working well together,
not for a long time

our middle aged boss
has ordered the five of us
to stay the weekend
in the office with him for an old-
fashioned encounter group*

only one of us
refuses, a youngish fair-
haired, anxious guy;
as records keeper, I have to
rush to give him his papers

he doesn't buy it
when I explain there's nothing odd
to having papers,
but he takes them and leaves in
a haze of insult and anger

sadly, I realize he's right: the boss had
abused his trust by writing those papers

as I accept this
about the about the boss I'd liked, a young
blonde slim woman sits
on my right; I start to chat with her
but know very quickly to stop,

adding only that I realize she needs some quiet time
to let her boyfriend's rejection "sift through the sand"

her gratitude for my understanding's clear,
as is her relief when her best friend arrives

her friend resembles
her a lot, but is very obese;
conversation now
seems possible, even welcome,
as the slim woman relaxes

I ask them where they're from, not at all surprised
to hear the names of two bread basket** states

I begin to sense a great deal of history agitating
among us: personal, familial, genetic

then I note the large aqua plastic basket the slim
woman brought with her has been filled with water

I undress so as not to wet my clothing,
then gratefully soak my aching legs in it

there may be no way to wash away a gene's effect,
or the many consequences of abuse and rejection

but sometimes letting them sift through the sand,
or simply soak, makes walking on more possible

[a mix of tanka and two-liners with an opening dreamku, on a dream of 3-19-17. *Encounter Group, from Wikipedia; I attended a few, full day encounter groups back in my 20's (the hey-day, if you will, of such groups). **bread basket states: "Parts or all of 10 states sitting within the Great Plains. These states are North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas, Nebraska, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, Wyoming, Texas, Montana and New Mexico." BTW, "sift through the sand" is in quotes in the 7th stanza because it's a verbatim quote from the dream. Photo "Soaking Up the Night" (3-30-17 009v2) by Roswila]

THE CRACKS PILE UP (photomorph) & ON THE SIDEWALK (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

ON THE SIDEWALK

the frowning, shoeless young
woman stops short, and balancing
precariously first on one foot and then
the other, quickly strips off her red socks,
and without looking flips each in turn
on to the green lawn at the edge
of the sidewalk, then thumping
heavily straight ahead, continues
down the sun-hot cement with nothing
left at all between her vulnerability
and the harshness of walking on

SECRET LIGHT (photomorph) & PRAYER TO THE EUCALYPTUS (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

PRAYER TO THE EUCALYPTUS

ah, dear old tree, strong arms
holding your portion of the placid
blue, lift me up, too, cradle
me as a baby against the wide
chest of the sky, out of reach
of the earth's turbulent dance,
peaceful for as long as it takes
to scribble down this prayer
to you, for I'm babbling away,
only a babe still learning
how to use the magic in words
to maintain my balance

[non-dream free verse poem written 3-28-17. Haven't written a "Prayer to..." poem in quite a while. (If you'd like to read some of the others type "PRAYER TO" in the top upper left-hand search box on this page.) Not surprising that prayer popped to mind today, though, given how much physical pain I was in on my walk. Photomorph "Secret Light" (3-28-17 004v4); the source photo for this pic is of the actual tree that inspired the above writing; I snapped it after drafting the prayer/poem; by Roswila]

SIGNALING THE TURN (photo) & BACKWARDS (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

BACKWARDS

an Old Man, his tricycle
turned backwards beneath him,
pedaling it oh-so-slowly
forward with a wide cargo platform
rigged in front of him across
what had been the back wheels:

Cool, Old Man!
to turn things around
to suit yourself
and then to build upon them
