NIGHT CLIMB (photo) & THAT SMARTS (dreamku series) by Roswila

THAT SMARTS

a poster proof sheet
appears suddenly in the air,
dozens of versions
of the same basic design
for a new smart phone campaign:

a woman’s huge fingers,
just the well-manicured tips at
an artsy angle,
hang over the city-scape
as if it were a keyboard

the theme implied by each poster:
the entire city at your fingertips

an unintended
association rises
like a miasma:
King Kong clinging to the top
of the Empire State building

trailing this old movie image the thought:
loss of proportion can be dangerous

BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO DREAMKU (& PHOTOS): The dream-based poems posted on this blog -- dreamku, tanka, two-liners, and monoku -- are offered in the spirit of collaboration. I have done my part. Now it’s your turn to jump in and see what comes up for you. I.e., there is no right or wrong way to understand or interpret any of these dream offerings. Even my own understandings of them change over time. And it gives me joy when a reader sees something in any of them that I have not.

For more in-depth exploration:

-- very brief comparison of dreamku and haiku: DREAMKU ARE NOT HAIKU

PRAISE SONG (photo) & EMPTY (dreamku series) by Roswila

EMPTY

“You light up my life…”
I laugh as I recall I’d heard
this song in my dreams

it’s a sardonic
laugh, especially given
the sentimental
lyrics that trailed right after:
“…you give me hope to carry on”

just who invaded
the echoing attic of my
sleeping mind last night,
stashing songs like chachkis
for a future garage sale

and just why did they
bring up that retro theme song
“…a man called Zorro” –
foxy my foot! more like a fox
casing an empty hen house

[a dreamku with three tanka on a dream of 3-11-13. Full lyrics to “You Light Up My Life.” Chachkis is a common spelling of the Yiddish word tzotchkes, which means a bunch of bric-a-brac, novelty items, stuffed animals, vases, any sort of over the top ornament, etc. (It can also be plural without the “s,” or at least I’ve seen it used that way.) And zorro is the Spanish word for fox. There’s an old T.V. show about Zorro on a retro-T.V. station here, and it was that theme song I heard in the dream. Photo “Praise Song” by Roswila]

RUMORS OF SPRING (photo) & AT WHAT PRICE (dreamku series) by Roswila

AT WHAT PRICE

how can I ever
help her with her resume
a third friend dumped all
my suggestions in the trash
without even reading them

invited and rejected in one fell swoop
all too typical of these two relationships

I decide for once
to hang in, simply to go
along for the ride
but even this new tactic
of mine is doomed to failure

as the car the three
of us sit in turns a corner
one drops a code word
it lands so hard on my ears
I can’t help but grit my teeth

they’re at it again,
trying to make me over
in their own image

my butt cannot find
a safe purchase on the car’s
slanted bucket seat
clearly not the place for me
I get out before the highway

I’d have loved to watch the tides of spring flowers
rolling by the roadway, but at what price beauty?

THAT OLD GANGLIA OF MINE (photo) & NEUROLOGICAL HANDIWORK (dream tanka pair) by Roswila

NEUROLOGICAL HANDIWORK

there was a baby
in my dreams last night, and why
that five hundred dollars?
neither were mine but both
land in my hands to handle

and why this poem?
sigh, to stop would’ve been
a bit like trying
to end a rain, palms stretched up
entreating the sky

POINTS OF VIEW (photo) & THE CONTEST (dreamku series) by Roswila

THE CONTEST

three distinct versions
of the submitted photo
hang on a dark board
each lives and grows along
its own unique lines

one atop the other
they each unfurl past the right edge
colors don’t matter
it’s the shapes as they swirl
that garner attention and votes

the winner’s announced
it’s a three-way dead heat
the Best of the Future
goes to the bottom picture
(that keeps fading in and out)

the Best of the Past
goes to the one on the top
(not a lot clearer
but its changes anticipate
what the viewer feels)

Best of the Present
goes to the one in between
(like a pointillist
painting, dots of deceptive
permanence highlight its flux)

blue ribbons don’t stick to these fluid three
just as well, the spoken word is more their style
