IS THIS THE EXIT? (photo) & "the plastic swan floats..." (non-dream senryu) by Roswila

the plastic swan floats
down the pool behind its shadow
... bassackwards

[non-dream senryu written 10-21-15. Don't know why I get such a kick out of the plastic swan usually floating around in our pool. Maybe because for an inanimate object it often has such "life" to it. Today's accompanying photo was taken a year and a half ago, but it's the same swan, same pool as in the senryu. Photo "Is This the Exit?" (6-14-14 009) by Roswila]

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers, as the above is), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

UNDER THE BED (photomorph) & NEVERTHELESS (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

NEVERTHELESS

why am I checking
under my bed, like a child
afraid of the dark?
omigosh, a baby horse
barely the size of my hand

so young that standing
is still a bit of a problem
first I steady it,
then I pick it up carefully
so as not to frighten it

I'm concerned about
its health for it appears
weak and way too pale,
and wonder why its mother
abandoned it under my bed

what do I know about caring for baby horses?
but nevertheless, it's now in my hands to deal with

LOST IN MEMORY (photomorph) & NEW EMPHASES (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

NEW EMPHASES

nothing stays the same
not even the photos I so
carefully edit:
each time I come back to one
it's morphed, one way or another

even as I've heard
a waking memory changes
when called upon,
already pruned by tight storage
and starting to sprout new emphases

the memory's demonstration
of life's mysterious momentum

DIVING IN (photomorph) & OFF THE RAG (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

OFF THE RAG

why don't either of us find this odd:
to be setting up a huge backup supply
of menstrual pads for the women
in our retirement community

and odder yet, that outside
the window, a 96 year old resident,
nearly full-term pregnant,
swims laps like a racer in our pool

well, I suppose fecundity bubbles
below the surface at every stage of life

the trick, then, not to ignore
creativity's flicker in the face
of late life changes and assumptions,
but to welcome and nourish
its tickling urge

[free verse poem on a dream of 10-20-15. BTW, this dream also has something to say about death, but I've chosen not to highlight that in this poem. Also, about late life changes. Photomorph "Diving In" (11-9-13 075v2) by Roswila]

JUST PASSING THROUGH (photomorph) & THE STOPOVER (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

THE STOPOVER

the migration of the budgerigar
starts in a childhood memory
and glides with me into sleep

it stops briefly in my morning as I
recall its dreamy sea blue shape,
resting on the railing of a balcony
in early evening light
while I hold my breath,
hoping it will come back inside,
knowing it flew away this time
only to seek water

but sadly, where I live now
is as dry as its ancestral
Aussie deserts, and its thirst
still as unslaked as my desire
to find meaning in its welcome
if puzzling stopover in a dream

[free verse poem on a dream of 10-19-15. BTW, budgerigar is another name for parakeet. My family almost always called them budgies. Photomorph "Just Passing Through" (10-5-15 008v2) by Roswila]

WOODLAND SPIRITS (photomorph) & GETTING TO KNOW YOU (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

GETTING TO KNOW YOU

"It's some sort of maple," my new friend
says when I comment how I love
the old tree in his Inn's backyard

A field guide to trees unopened
in my backpack, I sit beneath the almost
leaping maple, and watch the shadows
its leaves make as they touch all
that comes within their compass

A nod here, a gesture there,
sometimes a ballet of branches,
the tree is rarely fully still,
its own life openly meeting
the wind's inquiry, the sun's bounty

Later, a privileged viewer, I watch
the tree from my room's window,
its branches bowing in the rain's grace
as if it were accepting a healing
or a mitzvah

I remember I still do not know
this maple's name, but stay the reach
of my hand toward the field guide,
for there is knowing
and there is knowing

And we are on the long path of trees,
one that opens slowly, naturally,
to flourish in its own season,
and needing no name

TRAWLING FOR LIGHT (photo) & LUCID DREAM (sort of) (mixed format dream poem) by Roswila

LUCID DREAM (sort of)*

How will I ever
write about these dream images?
They're aware they're dreams
and they're running away,
absconding with my recall

OK, let me try to
make this a bit clearer:
A passel of dream
images does not want to
become fodder for my poems

So they fade themselves
deliberately and quickly,
even while I rush
to beat them to the punch by
starting to write as I dream

But somehow I know
that the only thing I will bring with me
into waking other than the vacuum
left by these thieves, is an old haiku
of mine that I recall as I give up
the struggle to poeticize
what does not want me to:

writing haiku
catching the river
in a net**

[three tanka and a haibun (prose capped by a haiku) on a dream of 10-17-15. *Lucid dream, one in which one is aware of dreaming. **Actual haiku I wrote many years ago. It may have been dream based. And I can no longer find a record of it (other than in my memory) so am not sure about the second line. It may have been first written as "trying to catch the river..." If so, I like my dreaming mind's little edit. As to not being able to find a record of this 'ku, that's extremely unusual. Ah HAH! It disappeared, too, just like the dream images! And that's only partly a joke. Photo "Trawling for Light" (10-7-15 trawling for light) by Roswila]
