OUT OF DARKNESS (photo) & IN THE DARK (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

IN THE DARK

there's been an explosion and the tree-tall young
man who manages the buildings in this area
announces it was the electric lines in the walls
of the rooms, and that another blow up may happen
at anytime; and so he stands watch to warn us,
arms crossed like a latter day Paul Bunyan,
outlined against a huge full moon, scanning
this big city crossroads for any hint of electric
trouble; as I watch him, watch over the apartment
buildings, I'm relieved to recall the one in which
I live is in no danger: our power lines were blown
out in the last explosion; and for once, I'm grateful
that the active lines of power go right around me,
leaving me in safety, if also in the dark

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

DON'T GO THERE (photomorph) & DOUBT (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

DOUBT

why are you at me again?
poking into my most intimate aspects;
I thought we'd parted ways long ago,
each of us for our own unexpressed
reasons, and it's been so long I didn't
even recognize you by your looks
(you've aged as much as I) nor by
your actions (you're being openly
seductive, something you never
were back then, though I got the
message anyway), I only know it's
you by an immediate gut reaction
of mine to the come-on smile in your
dark eyes as you look at me, and the
suffocating doubt I instantly feel:
are you for real? do you actually
think I'd go back to being manipulated
and then made fun of behind my back,
a living (and all too vulnerable) toy
of yours? and do I even want to bother
figuring this all out: what you truly desire
at this late stage, or what your cronies
want (whom I know are somewhere
around here, they have to be, when did
you ever go anywhere without them
to egg you on) when I can just push
you off ... and so I turn my back on
you with a deep, solidifying breath,
hoping the stiff neck I suddenly
note is not also a metaphor

[free verse poem on a dream of 12-12-18. Hm, yesterday it was about second chances. And today it's about not wanting to repeat something. No pleasing some folk, is there? :-) Well, there is that doubt at the end today -- a warning maybe about being "stiff necked." Photomorph "Don't Go There" (10-27-15 021v4d) by Roswila]

BETTING ON THE LIGHT (photo) & ON SECOND CHANCES (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

ON SECOND CHANCES

he tells me I've been authorized to accept a
Second Chance win in the lottery* should one
come up among the losing tickets of his he hands
me; and that's the second myth I'm aware
of coming up against just now: one, that anyone
would feel, much less be this generous toward
me, and, two, that there are any second
chances for anything: a loss is a loss, they're
ultimately what undo a life's knotted weave
altogether; then the young dark-haired, dark-
skinned woman I have so admired from a distance,
who happens to handle second chance winnings,
tells me with a chilly, very unpleased tone to her
voice, that I have won with one of the losing tickets
with which my friend had gifted me; as we step
up to the window in the lottery hall to collect on my
Second Chance win she, quite surprisingly, begins
to warm towards me; as has happened before in
the past but I had long forgotten sometimes seems to,
I've gotten a second chance and she has decided
she likes me after all: now this is a kind of Second
Chance win in which I'd really like to believe

[free verse poem on a dream of 12-11-18. I don't buy Lottery or any of these sorts of tickets, but a friend does. I was quite surprised when he told me recently that there's a Second Chance Lottery website here in CA, for losing ticket numbers to register for another try. Surprised enough that it impacted a dream within days as a metaphor. :-) Photo "Betting on the Light" (10-27-15 012v6a) by Roswila]

FLIGHT TO THE SUN (photomorph) & THE BOY I WAS MEANT TO BE (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

THE BOY I WAS MEANT TO BE

the boy I was meant to be
has dark, almost black hair,
thick and curly
and short

and his energy reaches higher
than any kite, his curiosity
matching the flights
his energy urges upon him

I'd say he's courageous only
they say courage is going ahead
despite being afraid and he does
not yet know to fear his next step

he simply responds to the moment,
with full engagement or rejection,
without much thought either way,
just an intuitive aiming of the
energy that radiates from him
like the corona of a sun
around his shiny dark hair

[non-dream free verse poem, inspired by the recurring dream image I have of a young dark haired boy, written 12-11-18. See yesterday's poem post "Not Even Home" for the most recent; he also appeared two days before that in the dream poem post "Lopsided Loping." I'd initially thought to check out all the posts here over the years for dreams in which he has appeared (and there have been many since I started this blog in 2006). But then the first line to this poem burbled up. Photomorph "Flight to the Sun" (11-24-15 053v2i) by Roswila]

UP FROM BELOW (photomorph) & TAKING CARE (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

NOT EVEN HOME

a note's slipped under my door;
I have to bend just about every one
of my arthritic joints to retrieve it,
but even before I can pick up the small
sheet of paper I know it's more
information
about the danger
I've begun to recognize I'm in;
I back off from the door and the note
-- it radiates more and more like an
odd sort of ransom demand -- as well as
away from whomever I hear
moving about
outside my rooms;
I also back off from being in
this dream to observing it:
a young dark haired
boy is alone in a submarine with only
a black uniformed, adult male protector;
the adult's been rushing the boy
away from those
who'd kill him,
the submersible resting beneath
a stone arch in water that barely covers
the boat; they're supposed to meet up
here with some helpers, but the man
suddenly realizes it's a set up
and scrambles
to start the submarine and steer the boy
to safety; next, I see this lively young
boy arrive unscathed at his home in
a second floor apartment, his parents
are overjoyed
to see he's alive and well;
as the boy scampers into the living room
he tells them about what happened
and how his protector had been duped;
the parents freeze in their tracks, knowing
now they're also
in extreme danger
and have to get out of their home
with their energetic little boy, and toot sweet
if there's to be any chance at all that their little
family will survive: as I observe their furious
flurry to flee I think all too wryly:
"So, there's truly no place like home,
not even home"

[free verse poem on a dream of 12-10-18. This dark haired boy was in a dream/poem of a couple nights ago (posted here: "Lopsided Loping") and has been in dreams over the years. Though not always in dangerous situations, or post-apocalyptic ones (as in "Lopsided Loping"). I suppose I should do some searching through my blog archives as it might be informative to see when in my life, and in what dream scenarios he shows up. PET ROCK (photomorph) & "the gift..." (dream based monoku) by Roswila

the gift whose fault is it when the pet rock bites

[monoku [one line haiku] on a dream of 12-9-18. I haven't had this happen before ... I decided to open a folder of my photos at random today and pick one to write something on. I couldn't settle on a pic in that folder so began fussing at one particular photo, winding up with the new version above. As soon as it appeared in this form on my computer screen, I recalled a dream fragment from last night on which I then wrote the monoku. Photo "Pet Rock" (11-24-15 053v3a) by Roswila]

DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE (photo) & THE WAR BENEATH (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

THE WAR BENEATH

why the underpinning of the Vietnam jungles to this
forest edges dream? at least they resemble what I've seen
in faded, flickering old footage of that horrific war; odd
to label any war horrific: doesn't that three letter word
say it all by itself? but somehow this association to that
war feels that much more horrific; yet, the present day
scene of this dream that it lies beneath like unexploded
ordnance, is a genuinely peaceful one of forest greenery
in which a young man sits cross legged on the earth,
carefully and artfully organizing modern dangle earrings
around the outside edges of an antique Vietnamese wire-
wrought box, a box centuries older than that war
it survived to find service as a present day jewelry
display case; did I say this latter day scene is
peaceful? well, mostly and then in spite of the
rustling of branches that draw the young artist's
eyes every so often away from his detailed,
delicate work: here and there the bushes wave and
part, crackling lightly, then instantly closing over
the dark space they open upon, and always just
before the retreating stalker can be observed:
no bullet loosed or deadly pit trap sprung
from the war beneath it all, this time
