ROOF TOP PARTY (photo) & OUT OF SIGHT (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

OUT OF SIGHT

a slew of gulls, one after another,
lands on the flat roof, first their
orange-yellow feet disappear
from sight behind the eave,
then their wings and heads,
and all that squawking rising
as they flap furiously down,
must be quite a wild roof top
party going on up there!

[non-dream free verse poem written 3-12-17. I've had this one hanging fire for some time as other poems had more punch. But today feels like just the right time to post it. As the title literally refers to the seagulls being out of sight as they got onto the roof. But can also be read to reflect what's happening out there in Isla Vista (the University of Santa Barbara's town) right now while I type this. Things are rapidly becoming "out of sight" as Deltopia gets into swing. I know, I just got back from my walk. Gorgeous day, with lots of students in the streets and on house balconies partying with loud music. And it's only just begun. Photo "Roof Top Party" (3-14-17 008v2) by Roswila]

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

WAITING FOR THE SUN (photo) & THE DRONING (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

THE DRONING

like a bird she tilts her head toward the droning
in the sky; in the sky over there toward which
she tilts her head like a small bird in a bush,
tilting her head she looks again toward the rumbling,
for what will fly, gliding safely on by, and what
will storm endlessly down like the Trade Towers*

feeling as tiny as a bird among many tiny birds
in the shadowy, tangled bushes she wonders
and worries while she tilts her head toward
the droning, following its hypnotic demand
around and around the foggy sky

[non-dream poem written 3-16-17. It was fun to play around with repeat words and rhythms in this poem, something I rarely do. FYI, there's what must be a small tourist plane, that sometimes circles and circles the ocean overlook when I'm sitting there. *A reference to 9/11; I was living in New York City at the time, which horrific tragedy left me somewhat more sensitive to planes overhead. LIFE AT THE EDGE (photo) & PRAYER TO THE EDGE (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

PRAYER TO THE EDGE

thank you for the frozen times,
for the times when nothing
changes or can be changed;
for they offer the opportunity
to be thoroughly engaged by
the treasure of the now,
the chance to be wholly
here before we're
tumbled
willy-nilly
and headlong
over
the cliff edge
into the new,
into
the unknown
of another
tumultuous
rebirth

[non-dream free verse poem written 4-6-17. As mentioned in an earlier post, I've been pulling a Rune a day, in the early morning. Today's Rune was Isa, which is the Rune of ice and the frozen. This poem came out of that and what I felt/thought as I stood at the beach overlook fence at mid-day. After which I tossed a bit of a flowering branch into the ocean while visualizing a pentacle of thank you's. BTW, it was also a very chilly walk to/from the overlook today. :-) Sometimes oracle/divinatory systems address the obvious things we miss in our search for great significance. NO LOOKING BACK (photomorph) & SWEET HELL (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

SWEET HELL

how many times have I walked away from
the hell of this impossible yet sweet yearning
you've seeded in my all too fertile and hot
imagination? too many times now even to
begin to count; but, hey, maybe that would be
a way to distract myself from the impossibility
of you: one could entirely fill a lifetime counting
the stars and my failed escapes from this hell
must equal them in number by now; ah well, I've
never been very good at math, not to mention I
tend to bore rather readily, and so I'll dispense
with counting and go on walking away from
hell each time the heat becomes intolerable,
or the smoke and mirrors of your newest act
become so painfully obvious that I can no longer
explain them away or dress them up; I've been
lucky thus far, I suppose, that each time I've
walked away and then looked longingly back
over my hunched shoulder at the sweet hell
of you, I've not been turned into a pillar of salt

RUNE FOR THE DAY: The Solitary Camel (photomorph) & IT'S COME TO THIS (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

IT'S COME TO THIS

and so it's come to this, though
no surprise as I am 73 and rather
arthritic, but still I find it a bit
more than wryly amusing today
that the steed on which I escape
the confines of my life is a walker,
and how often I stop not even so
much to rest as to soak in the sun,
its heat reaching right through
my blue sweatshirt to the skin
of my entire torso beneath,
skin that's still lively and
responsive despite
a dearth of touch

[non-dream free verse poem written 3-26-17. Photomorph "Rune for the Day: The Solitary Camel" (4-3-17 009v2) by Roswila; I've started pulling a Rune at random each morning, so of course am seeing Runes [actual, or imagined like this one] everywhere I go. :-)]

COMMINGLED (photomorph) & SURRENDER (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

SURRENDER

stop it!
stop trying to fix it!
stop trying to rewrite this turbulent story
to meet your need
for calm
for clarity
for a sense it can not have,
there are just too many levels:
you cannot peel apart the excreted
layers of a pearl whose shape
you do not like and re-arrange them
to reflect what you want them to,
you simply must allow yourself
to give up
to be defeated
to go under the wheels of the juggernaut
yet one more time ... too often the only
fragment of free will left to us
by this struggle we call life
is to surrender

BLOSSOMING MIND (photomorph) & "mid-day meandering..." (non-dream haiku) by Roswila

mid-day meander
stilled purple blossoms beam
over shadowy green blades

[haiku written 4-2-17. This one may be a bit of a mouthful for a haiku, but I so liked that scene. Guess I'll just stet it, over fullness of images and all. Photomorph "Blossoming Mind" (3-28-17 2656v9i) by Roswila]
