FALLOUT (photomorph) & LIFE OUT LOUD (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

LIFE OUT LOUD

she remains outdoors despite all
the exploding bombs (and threats
of bombs) from the pale blue sky;
her only attempt to shelter any part
of herself? to turn her back on
what’s falling and soon to explode:
she’s nigh on to sick to death of
seeing the beginnings of carnage,
(her eyes burn and ache from all
she tends to witness); then (damn
her good peripheral vision) two
huge rocket-bombs launch and
even as she sees what she does
not want to, the disasters set on
happening slide down the sky;
it’s no real relief to hear a man
off to her right declare “Don’t
worry, they’re aimed upstate,”
and she abruptly wakes to more
than usually chaotic and loud
traffic noises from outside her
open window: OK, so there's
the source of the explosions,
but she’s still uncertain what
the dream might be saying
by its choice of metaphor

[free verse poem on the dream of 10-22-19. I’ve had this same concern on waking from a dream before. Also produced by loud noises around me as I slept: neighbors slamming their doors on the way to breakfast, that the dream turned into me getting shot in the back. There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

MAKE OF IT WHAT YOU WILL (photomorph) & DOLLOPS (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

DOLLOPS

a woman I’ve known since adolescence
and another I’d like to get to know, walk
up to me, stopping barely long enough
for me to say how much I respect the way
they manage their lives, by giving The Devil
his due as needed; I then add that I wish I
had that sort of ability to suspend what I
am and/or believe, so that I could have
a life more in keeping with that everyone
else seems to have; I can tell I’m losing
either their interest or their understanding,
or more likely, both, so quickly add
“However, please, continue to take note
of those little bits of odd knowledge that
tickle at your awareness, those dollops
of intuition that rise from beneath all
the ‘sturm und drang’ and don’t seem
apropos of anything, do not dismiss or
waste them: like the little stone that
took Goliath down, they each hold
a surprising power”

[free verse poem on a dream of 10-20-19. In one respect, I see the woman I know as the past and the one I don’t, as the future. I’ve been more than usually taken up with endlessly picking at my past and worrying about the future. So, at least in part, this dream could be heard to say it’s important -- even crucial -- not to forget about my intuitions during all this. BTW, quotes like the one ending this dream poem I rarely actually “hear” in the dream. They are gleaned from the dream’s action and images, and my dreaming I’s feelings/thoughts about it all. Of course, that assertion could just be the story my “left-brain interpreter” made up instantaneously as I woke and recalled the dream. I.e., meaning/quotes, etc. were not an actual occurrence in the dream, but came with waking. I think I’ve written about our brain’s left-brain interpreter before here. And how I wonder if it is not responsible for most, if not all, of the story lines/meanings of our dreams as it struggles to make sense of the memories of our brain’s sleeping activity. To my understanding that activity is mostly record keeping: connecting and “filing” various memories. BTW, this does not take anything away from the meanings we find in our dreams. It may just be that we didn’t dream those meanings. But that our conscious minds projected the import onto the screen of the dream as we woke and recalled it. Via the left-brain interpreter. Yikes! This is a difficult concept to get into words. Kinda like getting wrestling a dream onto the page.

DEFINING THE SHAPES (photomorph) & THE STYLE DU JOUR (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

THE STYLE DU JOUR

everybody’s got Joan Crawford* eyebrows these days
they march archly away from each other across
the hillock of a forehead, then pause pointedly
before a dramatic turn as if to say: this performance
will certainly earn an academy award

[free verse poem on a dream of 10-22-19. I’m not surprised I had a dream about over-manicured eyebrows. I’ve been finding today’s trend for dark, designer brows rather annoying and distracting. (Women’s tend to be the biggest offenders, IMHO.) I hasten to admit, some of that annoyance may come from envy. My own brows are getting thinner and thinner, and have been white (along with my lashes) for years. In some photos I look brow-less (and eyelash-less). *In case you're too young to have seen a Crawford movie, click here to see some pix of her and her famous eyebrows. WHICH WAY FROM HERE (photo) & THE HIGH ROAD (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

THE HIGH ROAD

maybe she’s dizzy so often these days
because she has to take the high road,
again and again, ride way above
all this small stuff people
(and to be honest, she, too)
whip up into an immobilizing morass,
a latter-day tar pit;
true, she feels much lighter and freer
up here, in the higher reaches
(as they say in 12 Step programs:
to feel good, you have to do good)
and she’d just get busy enjoying
the wider view,
but for this vertiginous fear
that she might be rising
way out of her element

[non-dream free verse poem written 10-18-19. Funny enough, I was looking down on my world when I drafted this poem. I was sitting on the library balcony that overlooks our retirement community's pool.
😊 I’d actually had the idea for this poem a couple days ago. That memory, combined with an especially dizzy day (I really am dealing with various intensities of vertigo episodes these day), may be why I recalled the idea. Photo “Which Way From Here” (ss-3 10-16-19[10]) by Roswila: This photo is a very old one of mine, taken on a second floor balcony of our retirement community, on the other side of the complex of buildings from the pool area. The photo title does not reference this but the many different directions, including up or down, one can go from there. I must admit that what drew me to take this pic many years ago, however, were all those shadows and lines -- love 'em (as well as that contrast to the puffy greenery).]
