A NEW SUNSET (photomorph) & THE DOG AND THE MONKEY (dream narrative) by Roswila

THE DOG AND THE MONKEY

it's the filming of a foreign movie and happening
in real life simultaneously (you know, the way emotional
life has its distinct reality within the manifest world)

the usual Felini-like characters populate it: charming
and dark, clowns and innocents, with a less usual string
of vibrant children and one small dog (well "small"
depending on how you think of it, as it's large
for a chihuahua)

two children currently being filmed bring the movie
smack dab into the reality of now when they get lost
and then found, and sent to take the classes
they'd almost lost out on by going missing;
however, the star here's the dog: how to train
it to a leash without breaking its joyful energetic
spirit that still radiates despite the wounds
its many tattoo-like scars attest to

the final scene of the movie is at the beach, the dog
just having learned to accept a lead when needed
but happy to have been set free for now, to leap
around the small dunes, trailing puffs of sand
in its wake, its shy new monkey companion
gamboling along at a little distance

when they reach the water the monkey clambers
onto the dog's back, embracing it belly down
with its long arms and legs, then loosening
its grip just enough to slide around and under
the dog to hang there, its own back lightly splashed
by the surf's retreating froth, as the dog ambles along
the sea's edge in the sunset's waning glow

the video camera frame holds this all in its eye,
maybe a still will eventually be made of the best
second of it as it cannot last, but maybe not,
for to freeze even the most minute portion
is to desert life's creative flow as it rises
and ebbs, rises and ebbs

and now is as good a time as ever to leave off
the telling of this story, and join the endless flux
from which it's drawn, leashed and free, movie and reality

[narrative on a dream of 7-5-16. BTW, I'm a monkey in chinese astrology, and I recently posted a poem called "I Hate Men" in which I compare them to dogs. Hm... Photomorph "A New Sunset" (10-1-09 7249v3b) by Roswila]

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers, as the above is), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

HIVE DANCE (photomorph) & EYES SHUT (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

EYES SHUT

the world around without sight muting
its profusion: more alive than a hive of bees,
with a sweet aromatic sting and abuzz
with mysterious purpose, while she,
the lazy queen bee in the center of it all,
not quite napping, nor quite awake,
opens wider and wider to a dream of a huge
honey pot, hers only for the asking
to dive into and let her tattered iridescent
wings for once stay softly furled against
her achingly proud back, soothed at last
by this silken slide into a golden pot of honey

JACARANDA (photomorph) & THE JACARANDA (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

THE JACARANDA

sadly, very few jacaranda blossoms
remain on the tree, but there's always
the memory of it in full bloom
the year before, its flowers crowding
the branches, the wind scattering
their overflow of violet gems
on the bright green lawn below

and if not this memory, then the expectation
of a full to bursting blooming and cascade
next year to capture imagination and camera

but why, when here these few precious
pockets of pale purple shine soundly out
of the darkly leafed branches like the faces
of dear friends at their windows watching
for a wanderer to come home
to the eternity of now

CAN'T SEE THE FOREST FOR THE TREES (photomorph) & I HATE MEN (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

I HATE MEN*

"...he may have hair upon his chest
but sister so does Lassie" ...

yep, they're all dogs (even the ones
without chest fur), yes, one entire
half of the human species
gives canines a bad name

but, then again, maybe I'm just a bitch
who's been barking up all the wrong trees
my entire life, lost in a forest
of deep voices, earthy smells,
and tantalizing sights

nah, it feels so much better to blame the male
of the species, my anger hot and stimulating
as I sit here filing the nails I've broken
or torn to the quick trying to climb
unwelcoming trees

[non-dream free verse poem written 7-4-16. *The title and line in quotes are from the song "I Hate Men", from the musical Kiss Me Kate, which is based on Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew." Photomorph "Can't See the Forest for the Trees" 6-28-16 001v5a) by Roswila]

SHOOTING STARS (photomorph) & FALLING STAR (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

FALLING STAR*

"Catch a falling star
and put it in your pocket
save it for a rainy day ..."

she reaches for each word
of this delightful old song,
plucking one after another
from the familiar and not unfriendly
darkness around her,

adding each in turn to a growing bundle
held gently in the curve of her arm
against her heart, a bouquet
of incipient songs

"Catch a falling star
and put it in your pocket
never let it fade away" ...
never let it fade away ...
fade away ...
away ...

[free verse poem on a dream of 7-3-16. *The phrases in quotes are from the lyrics to the Perry Como song "Catch A Falling Star". I was singing it as part of the dream and woke up singing it in my mind. And last but certainly not least (if unrelated), HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY! PHANTASMAGORICAL (photomorph) & PRAYER TO THE WIND (dream inspired, free verse poem) by Roswila

PRAYER TO THE WIND

it's said that here, way out west,
they call you Mariah,* but whatever your name
I cry out to you from my becalmed mind
that cannot move beyond its obsession,
cannot dump its useless burden overboard
to plummet and drown in the depths

and worse yet, cannot stop the actions
of the body in which it's stored
below decks like a shameful secret,
cannot prevent the continuing efforts
to manifest what is not happening
no matter all the tip-toeing barefoot
across creaking floorboards
crusted with dried tears and shedding
knife-sharp splinters, to raise
artful but painfully ineffectual plans
like sail after empty sail

Mariah, whistle or rage or howl down
through my mind's narrow passages
and blow away the crowding fantasies
and yearnings as if they were
no more than spider webs stuck
to my dry and thirsty soul,

be the herald of a cleansing rainstorm

[free verse poem on dream fragment of 7-2-16 (posted 7-3-16). *A reference to the song from the musical Paint Your Wagon, "They Call the Wind Mariah." I was singing this song, on and off, in my dreams all night, though I don't recall anything of the dreams other than the singing. BTW, this poem is ninth in a "Prayer to..." series, all posted here (Prayer to the Sun, ... to the Haze, ... to Empty Moments, ... to An Other, ... to Surrender, ... to Deep Sadness, ... to Pain, and ... to the Left Brain Interpreter) so just search by title (search box is in the upper left of this page) if you're interested.
