LIFE IN THAT OTHER UNIVERSE (photomorph) & A VERY BRIEF ENCOUNTER (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

A MOST BRIEF ENCOUNTER*

what's your story, man? all I know is what
leaked from every pore of your body as you
passed me by: the fumes of war mixed with
the sharp tang of self-medication; but beneath
all that, what was there remaining that hadn't
gone up in fire and smoke, or succumbed to what
you ingest in order to find relief from the unbearable,
to avoid outright self-immolation; am I imagining
it, or was there other life yet peeking out from those
dark and fogged in reaches like the eyes of hidden
creatures unknowingly reflecting the moonlight,
or as I say, is it just wishful thinking that some
fractured but still lively parts of us survive our
Hells, floating like those many seagulls today,
way out in calmer water, beyond the surf
that would grind everything to dust

[non-dream free verse poem written 11-7-17. *I happened to be thinking of Veterans day -- November 11 -- when this encounter occurred. I live in a retirement community with a goodly number of vets. Probably should hold this for a Veterans Day post. But it's the only new thing I have to put up today. Photomorph "Life in That Other Universe" (11-2-17 011v3k) by Roswila]

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

TWICE NOTHING (photomorph) & DOUBLE VISION (a pair of free verse dream poems) by Roswila

DOUBLE VISION
(two dreams from one night)

One --

I hand that man I find almost painfully
magnetic a photo I took of him; I'm not
sure how he'll take it since I've morphed
it into a surreal scene:
he stands in a clearing in a forest
in a rather insubstantial form,
one can almost see through him
he's so blurred and ethereal.

Standing next to him in a line stretching
to the left frame of this photo, is a series
of versions of him, each one smaller
and more ghost-like in appearance
as they get further away from his side.

This seems like an odd progression to my
dream's observing eye, to go from somewhat
surreal into even less and less real:
but what is the real, anyway?

It's ultimately what we make of it, photo
or feeling, thought or action:
it's perception and how we morph it
that's everything

Two --

she's finally had her nose operation,
which is both a relief to me, as she really
needed it -- it'd been way out of joint
for too long and clearly causing her an awful
lot of pain -- and a wee bit of quickly passing
worry, as she's extremely elderly and frail;
I'm actually more than a little surprised to find
I'm relieved, since I've never liked her a whole lot,
but it seems that we are attached at a deep,
non-judgmental level to others without even
knowing it until a flag of caring unfurls
in one's heart like a sigh of relief

[free verse poems on two consecutive dreams of 11-3-17. I'm going to state what may be obvious about this pair. I read them as saying that one can get lost in the forest of perception but one's heart will always hold what's real. BTW, I laughed out loud when I recalled that nose operation in the second dream: my own has truly been way out of joint for too long. And I was also a bit relieved (seems to be another point of these dreams, a wish for relief) to remember dreaming that that overly-magnetic man is becoming less and less substantial in my eyes. Though I was a bit annoyed at how the dream suggests he's just one in a long line that have haunted me. No s--t! I don't really need to have my nose rubbed in that -- another nose image :-D. And that just sent me off googling on the symbolism of the nose: "[The nose: representation and symbolism]. ... This representation is certainly related to the symbolic force of the nasal appendage, not only a vector of diverse and variable odours but also a passage for the spirit and to the heart. The nose is therefore a significative element of relation, of contact and of expression." Yikes! Pin me, or what?
