SWEEPING IT UNDER THE RUG (photo) & HE'S IN CONTROL (dream narrative) by Roswila

HE'S IN CONTROL

he's in control of the entire project
even though I've been assigned
the bulk of the actual work
to make it happen

before actually taking any steps
and wasting time and resources,
I seek his approval of my outline
for how I'll proceed but quickly
realize he could not care less

"Just do it!" radiates from his face
and body posture as clearly
as if he's actually saying it

yikes! I can't even get proper oversight
from this head honcho! and I lose it,
yelling at him how men have,
have always had, all the power,
giving example after example
of how this is blatantly true

then he casually suggests I join
him to visit a mutual friend
in hospital where he's being treated
for a mysterious illness

and I'm effectively sidetracked
(a time worn tactic of those
in power, I think briefly)
and agree to go with him

but once in the friend's room
I realize I don't want to be there,
don't really care all that much any more
what happens to the guy we're here
to visit as he'd never been much more
than a fair weather friend to me
(though I still don't wish him ill)
and as I start to leave they point out
a mountainous pile of his show
business paper work

before I know it my organizing talent
has been commandeered, and I'm
carefully weeding and straightening
out his humungous paper pile for him
on the hospital bed

will I ever learn? or is it more a matter
of some lessons do get learned,
they just can't be acted upon
without the power to do so

IT'S OVER (photo) & SCATTERED (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

SCATTERED

yes, my heart is broken and, yes,
by now most folks hearts
would be well on the mend,
but what you don't understand
is that my heart was never
whole to begin with, was shattered
and re-shattered, decades ago
when I was only a child,
and now I must search for fragments
of the last few fragments hoping
to construct some semblance of a heart
from the shards I find, that like those
of an ancient clay vessel have been
scattered across eons of strata
by floods and quakes

GOING IN CIRCLES (photomorph) & SKY HIGH (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

SKY HIGH

he's crashed again!
well, more the fool he
for continuing his career
as a race car driver after
his first awful smash up

and that he's a top winner
in his class of drivers
is no excuse to keep
tempting fate, he could
wind up dead

he paces at a distance around
and around the wreck where
it landed after rolling end
over end, he seat-belted inside

he mumbles to himself,
shaking his still dizzy head,
that it's going to blow up
any second, but allows
his orbit to deteriorate,
bringing him closer
and closer to the hot
mess that had been
his vehicle of success

his urge to move in ever
closer to it over-riding
his common sense:
there's something in it
he really needs to see
or must retrieve

maybe he'll luck out one more
time and escape the wreck of yet
another of his efforts before
its blows sky high

DEVILTRY (photomorph) & ALL THEIR HORRORS (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

ALL THEIR HORRORS

another day
another wrestling match
me against all my demons
hell, what wrestling?
they've attached themselves to me
like leeches, nay, more like huge
barnacles that weigh me down
and put other people off
with their sharp edges

saying that this has gotten tiresome
doesn't even begin to express
my exhaustion, like today,
when I feel myself willfully
stepping up to that razor
sharp edge I could choose to avail
myself of and the demons briefly
back off, taking a sudden
collective breath

I'd like to say they shudder in fear
at the sight of what I'm contemplating,
for after all, if I go over that dark
edge their grips would be broken,
they'd be peeled off to rattle around
seeking another patsy to bedevil,
but they save all their horrors for me

QUAGGY (photomorph) & ON MAKING CONNECTIONS (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

ON MAKING CONNECTIONS

"Yes," the successful businesswoman says,
"I voted for her. You do know that she
got Town Hall totally renovated from its
skeleton on out when no one's ever been
able to even get that issue on the docket?
I've always said, no matter how intelligent
or well-spoken or right ... to my way of
thinking, of course," she says, in a light-
hearted aside ... "one can't get anything done
without connections, and she's got 'em,
up the wahzoo."

And I stand there dumb founded that I'm
dumb founded. There you have it, I think,
the reason my self-lauded independence,
my insistence on going it alone, on doing
it myself, has gotten me exactly no where.

All those old reasons for being a loner,
those injuries suffered at the hands of others
and piled up, one on the other,
from childhood forward, don't amount
to a hill of beans out here,
where things get done and undone.

Or rather, they do add up but to a distinctly
soggy, uncomfortable mound on which I sit,
watching a world of people go by,
connecting and getting things done.

OUTSIDE THE WHEEL (photo) & FOR REAL (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

FOR REAL

I can't tell what his interest is in me,
but think it's for real, whatever it is. Then
he hands me his contact information
for when this series of classes we're taking
is over and we go our separate ways,
the feeling of genuineness confirmed,
if still cloudy.

When I notice his motorbike, he gives
me a mini-lecture on an old book he'd just
re-read and how it's message was exactly what
we're being taught in the classes. Before he
even says the title I've realized what book it is
and blurt out "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle
Maintenance!"* Adding that I read it ages
ago and although I can't recall details
it really effected me at the time.

Then it hits me: he likes me because
he thinks I have a lot to learn and he can
teach me, that I'm a lump of clay for him
to shape to reflect the aesthetics
he's been picking up along his way,
a block of marble from which
he can sculpt his own Galatea.**

I sigh out loud, getting a puzzled look
from him as he hurries to his bike,
and I think there goes another failed hope
to be embraced just as I am, for once not
to be buried beneath the hot exhaust
of another's driving purpose.

[free verse poem on a dream of 12-2-16. *Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance." After reading up on it at this link, I'm beginning to think I might really benefit from re-reading it. **In Greek mythology, Galatea (female) was the statue that Pygmalion (male) sculpted and fell in love with. A modern take on it is the musical "My Fair Lady." Photo "Outside the Wheel" (5-25-09 1729v6) by Roswila]

SEED DRAGON (photomorph) & WHAT SHE WANTS (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila

WHAT SHE WANTS

what she wants most, underneath
her protestations of "love," "safety,"
and "peace," is for the world to mend her,
to offer only what heals her wounds
and ameliorates her scars, so that she
can studiously ignore anything that rubs her
the wrong way or simply lacks a promise
of succor, leaving most of what touches
on her life to sink in the oceanic depths
spreading out below her narrow wake,
these unacknowledged layers beneath
her passage growing and glittering
like an ancient dragon's hoarded treasure
