CLEFT (photo) & QUITE A PACKAGE (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

QUITE A PACKAGE

she's all dolled up
sexy's never been her wont
yet here she stands steaming
in a black sheath, platinum wig,
and cleavage baring lace bra

but she wants what she wants
and this is the way to go after it

as she'd known he would
he responds immediately
delighted by her come-on
little does the poor sap know
her interest is only physical

their intimate embrace
with all its heat and fuss
makes no declaration of liking
him at all, and only broadcasts
her final defeat, her giving in

getting what one desires
well, she's finally accepted
it's all about appearances
about how one packages one's self
and she's now quite a package indeed!

[free verse poem on a dream of 8-1-13. I've said this here before across the years but it bears repeating: sexual dreams are not necessarily about sex. As with most dream imagery the sexuality is often a metaphor, and this is true of the above referenced dream. Not that sexuality isn't one of the levels being addressed by it. Just that the more encompassing issue is "getting what one desires" in any aspect of life. I'd like to be able to say this is a very cynical dream and leave it at that. However, it's also a very anxious and sad one beneath the hype. Photo "Cleft" by Roswila]

BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO DREAMKU (& PHOTOS): The dream-based poems posted on this blog -- dreamku, tanka, two-liners, and monoku -- are offered in the spirit of collaboration. I have done my part. Now it’s your turn to jump in and see what comes up for you. I.e., there is no right or wrong way to relate to any of these dream offerings. Even my own understandings of them change over time. And it gives me joy when a reader sees something in any of them that I have not.

Also please note that a dreamku is not intended as an interpretation of a dream, or even a complete and accurate rendering of one. A dreamku is my attempt to get down dream imagery/action that grabs me and, as I write about it, elicits my conscious written association and response. Nor do I believe that one has to remember dreams in order for them to do their work. In my understanding, we are much more than our conscious selves.

You may also note in any further reading on dreamku you may do, that in the beginning I stressed "showing, not telling." However, that has been changing for some time now. I now tend to "show" (the dream narrative) and cap if off with a "tell" (some reaction and/or insight I've had to the dream as I was writing about it).

FAIRYLAND DAWN (photo) & SONG FOR SUNRISE (dreamku series) by Roswila

SONG FOR SUNRISE

we find one person,
an ailing dark haired man,
who knows the song --
he promises to teach
it to me tomorrow

his smile is fragile
but bright as he lies down
for the night's rest
I pray he'll make it through
to sing the lost song

once deeply asleep
his breathing becomes disturbed
"we may have found him
too late" I think, "the song may
die along with him into this night"

an ephemeral woman
an angel? a vision?
hovers above him
although not of this world
she's his last link to life

and she, too, knows the ancient song
they will sing it together at sunrise

MOUTHING OFF (photo) & SOMETHING OTHER (dreamku series) by Roswila

SOMETHING OTHER

human kids abandoned
to the care of non-humans:
invaders from Mars

we sneak through their camp
seeking to save the children
we retrieve them all

one young boy tiptoes
past a huge mother alien
on alert in front
of her wide open striped tent
calling out in sonic waves

her mouth spirals
outward filling her roundness:
“We become something
entirely other when you
pay us no mind at all”

SEEKING GUIDANCE (photo) & ON VOLUNTEERING (dreamku series) by Roswila

ON VOLUNTEERING

the new volunteer
runs himself ragged checking
in on everyone
"Thoughtful, but is it required?"
I say to his boss, who stays silent

"Typical!" I think
and turn to my own poorly
defined assignment:
to do the final typing
of a new romance novel

it's like pulling teeth
to get any instructions
at all from my boss
who cares less for work quality
than on where the buck lands

she won't even say
"No" to someone's attempt to
give me other work
I have to be the one
to set my job priorities

so it seems responsibility
is the cost of freedom of choice

THE HUNGERING (photo) & TASTY FEEDBACK (dreamku series) by Roswila

TASTY FEEDBACK

what a delicious
surprise! she hasn't eaten
this in many years:
ground beef seasoned and broiled
with cottage cheese on the side

they used to call it the dieter's plate but
even then she ate it as much for the flavor

and she's delighted now for this dream feedback:
a taste for dieting's kicked in when most needed

[a tanka with two two-liners on a dream of 7-26-13. This makes an interesting contrast (at least for me :-D) to an earlier dream of the same night. I posted that one -- "All the News That's Fit to Pop" -- here yesterday. A note on taste and the related smell in dreams. From what I've read they tend to be rare in dreams. That is, when the dream is so real we feel we've actually tasted or smelled; as opposed to just having known what the taste or smell was. I've only tasted realistically once in a dream, decades back, and smelled maybe a half dozen times that I recall. Any other time I've noted taste or smell in a dream I simply knew what it smelled or tasted like. In this dream, I knew what the taste of those two food was, i.e. I did not dream-taste them. This is frequently true with color in dreams for me as well. I'll often not see the color in the dream, but just know what it is. And this "just knowing" is not even remarkable in the process of dreaming. I.e., nothing seems to be missing during the dream experience. It only becomes notable on recall.
