THE FLOOD THIS TIME (a dreamku & photo by Roswila)

THE FLOOD THIS TIME

the flood this time
from the small backyard stream
covers a wide swath
a married man and I work
side by side shoveling out

we each express our
love of living by the water,
just knowing it’s there
feels healthy and comforting
despite the occasional flood

as I dig and clean
I describe the wall of water
as it fell downstream:
two stories tall and frothing
furiously like snarling mouths

“...but the sun feels good"
I add to my commentary,
“and there's peace in hard work" –
the man smiles, whether to himself
or in agreement I don’t know

PLEASE NOTE that in most browsers you can click on the above image for a larger version. Also, that the photo accompanying a daily dream poem or non-dream based poem is not necessarily meant to illustrate it, but to reflect some small, even slant aspect of the verse -- similar to Japanese haiga (illustrated haiku). I've also recently realized that although the dreamku (i.e. dream based poems) posted here tend not to have metaphor or simile, the accompanying photos almost always act as such. And to write a metaphor or simile into a dream scenario is something I rarely do. It can be confusing: did it really look like a hand, say, in the dream, or am I just being poetic to make my conscious point? As these dreamku act as a dream journal, my over-riding tendency is to try to stay close to the actual dream scenario itself. Admittedly making for a tendency to less "poetic" dreamku. Then why pay attention to any haiku, tanka, or monoku parameters at all when writing about my dreams? Because I find in even attempting to adhere to them I'm making choices that relieve my dream recall of a great deal of chatter so that I can get down to some important dream aspects. Here's a link to THE AREN'TS OF DREAMKU & ACCOMPANYING PHOTOS in which I go into some of the basic parameters for dreamku and the photos chosen to go with them (and with any non-dream based poems I post here, as well).

The archives in the sidebar hold years of the daily dreamku, tanka, monoku and photo posts I've made, grouped in one post by month. As I no longer post dreamku (or non-dream based poems) strictly daily, each post will appear below and then in the archives by the day on which it was posted.

There are many other sorts of posts here, not all dream-based. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non-dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers than myself), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

EAT YOUR CARROTS, HONEY (photo) & BIG BABIES (dreamku)

BIG BABIES

nothing remarkable
the men’s pregnancies
develop apace
they expect all women’s help
and unquestioning support

as usual I’m
the only woman to rebel
ever hear of Self Help?

[a tanka and dreamku on a dream of 1-11-12. LOL! Clearly my own big baby got triggered by someone else’s (actually, several male someone elses). Photo “Eat Your Carrots, Honey” by Roswila]

LAST FIRE OF WINTER (photo) & EVEN THIS POISON (dreamku)

EVEN THIS POISON

she swallows poison
to kill the disease raging
through her hot body
a cure more deadly than
the destructive malady

all energy gone she
decides to curl up, right there
on her living room rug
her embrace of death more
gracious than of life

her embattled life
fought on all fronts at once
it’s time to give up

her hands and knees
barely reach the floor before
she realizes
“I need the bathroom, and now!”
laughter bubbles up

she rises like an
awkward and befuddled phoenix
from her would be grave
life’s imperative overcoming
even this poison

ON THE EDGE (photo) & ABSTRACTED (dreamku) by Roswila)

ABSTRACTED

that which connects us
draws out thinner and thinner
an umbilicus
fed by my yearning and
refusal to let go

this abstracted cord
drapes across the years as
surely as an old
cable fallen from askew
and long abandoned poles

on my end puddles
of garish neon colors
flickering on and off –
on the other, a cooked egg
with a yolk of blue delftware

fully exposed
the yolk bares a convoluted
landscape of Holland
its tulips blooming only blue
against a crazed white sky

[four tanka on a dream of 1-7-12. Blue delftware is ceramic pottery made in the Netherlands; usually blue on white. I have clear childhood memories of being given various blue delft souvenirs – imitation, no doubt. Photo "On the Edge" by Roswila]
