WHIRLIGIG (photo art) & THIS SPINNING OF THE WHEEL (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

THIS SPINNING OF THE WHEEL

the wheels on the bike go 'round and 'round...
my long deceased mother and I, each a minuscule
figure clinging to the inside of the front wheel rim
in a different place, ride high... then low...
then high... as the bicycle rolls on...

ah well, another dream
spelling out the almost cliché
"what goes around comes around,"
but maybe this one dips a bit deeper

one might question, for instance,
who follows who in this scenario:
I could easily assume it's I trailing after
my deceased mother as she revolves
out of reach and unaware of me,
a resonating symbol
for how unwanted I feel,
have always felt

and there's another way to look at it,
a hot flush on my cheeks suggesting its truth:
how can I expect to really see, much less
deeply connect with any fellow traveler
when so totally focused on my own ride
on this spinning of the wheel

[free verse poem on a dream of 5-5-14. My immediate association on recalling this dream was to The Wheel of Fortune in The Tarot (Rider/Waite/Smith version):

PLEASE NOTE: in most browsers you can click on the above image for a larger version. Also, the photo accompanying a post is not necessarily meant to illustrate it, but to reflect some small, even slant aspect of the verse, similar to Japanese haiga (illustrated haiku).

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers, as the above is), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

IN THE FIRE'S WAKE (photo art) & THOUGH DECEASED (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

THOUGH DECEASED

she's deceased these many years
and I'm accustomed to her
occasional visit in a dream
yet this one's surprising for look
how young, slim, and beautiful she is

heads turn in a whispering wake
as she sails through the huge party
thrown in her honor, nodding
to each person with a bright smile

I, too, am stunned by how gorgeous
she is, but more so by how totally
she ignores me, the one who took care
of her while she died, as if
I'm not even here

I quickly subsume my hurt to a wry
acceptance, after all what can I really
expect after a lifetime of seeing
needful things that others often
can't or won't, and of not being taken
seriously when I could use it most

before I can retreat to steep
in the sustaining cauldron
of my inner world, I see she's now
huddling next to me, silent and close,
hiding behind my considerable bulk
from the hubbub in the room

though deceased these many years,
she's still very much alive
and just as needful

[free verse poem on a dream of 5-3-14. This was mildly lucid in that I knew I was dreaming again about my deceased friend. It was dreamed the same night as the one posted about yesterday, "In the Dog House." "Though Deceased" was the first dream of the evening. Things only seemed to go further down hill after that. By the way the "she" in this dream was an actual friend that I did take care of as she died of cancer, decades back. I should also note that here she's symbolizing an aspect of current relationships I have (at least as I understand them), as well as of myself. SINK HOLE (photo art) & IN THE DOG HOUSE (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

IN THE DOG HOUSE

something wakes me suddenly --
as I roll over to get to my feet
I land instead on my back on the floor
with one of the several dogs living here
nudging me insistently

I'm too tired and sleepy to haul myself
back into bed so curl up with the dog
and its mate -- a lovely female
with pale silky hair -- the three of us
forming a tangled nest on my tufted
baby blue rug

as I'm falling back to sleep the female
whispers in my ear as if it were
a bedtime story by the brothers Grimm:
You do realize we sometimes leave
a leather strap on a home's doorknob
to let our hunters know a human
lives there for the taking, don't you?

wide awake I struggle free of the no
longer comfortable nest of long limbs,
claws and teeth, and race to the front
door: a whippet thin golden collie
poses there pointing to the ajar door
with its open latch as if it were a quail

I rapidly shut and re-latch the portal
wondering if this stretched
collie was really warning me
the front door was open,
or had I simply caught it in the act
of unlocking and it was covering
its butt (so to speak)

then there's a clamor out in the hall,
muffled as quickly as it rises: what
can possibly be going on out there
at this pre-dawn hour? and what's
that minuscule scratching and bumping
now against my door?

on high alert, I hold my breath, a determined
if very sad guard against two worlds:
the unknown outside and the untrusted within

CLOUD COMPUTING (photo art) & MESSAGE FOR THE DREAMER (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

MESSAGE FOR THE DREAMER

look past these blowsy petals
waving the rumpled colors of night,
into the caravan of seeds
at the off-off-center:
there! do you see it?
steadily traversing the unchanging
unknown, crowded with all the wares
of the possible and the won't-ever-be?
now, work while waiting patiently
for this constant caravan that never
arrives and you may someday tap into
a slim surprise of art

[free verse poem on a dream of 5-2-14. I started writing this about a dream image as I was dreaming. And before it started morphing, the dream image itself was very much like the photo of mine above, that I edited yesterday. As I drafted this poem (once awake) it moved way beyond any of the elements I was vaguely chasing in the dream writing. It then occurred to me that, more and more, I'm riding without the training wheels, if you will, of a dream's recalled images/structure. I've always tended to do that in the closing lines of a dream piece. But find now that I'm doing it occasionally even as I first begin recalling the dream and then set pen to paper. Guess that's just a fancy way of saying that my way of writing about dreams may be changing (again). Sigh. I also find, more and more, that once I get behind the appearances of the images/metaphors of my dreams and poems, there's really nothing all that profound. (I may not like hearing some of what's beneath, but it's rarely profound.) It's the image/metaphor forms themselves that give me the pleasure. As if the vessel means more to me than its contents. How odd! But maybe that's one explanation for my enjoyment of poems by others that have no (readily, at least to me) apparent "meaning," but are filled with glorious images. THE EMPTINESS (photo art) & THEIR BUSINESS (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

THEIR BUSINESS

their business now? they seek
out dogs to train to be gentle,
obedient companions

she proudly puts two small
high energy mutts through their paces
in the workout cage, the air laden
with her unexpressed expectation
that I'll now return to the fold

but it's too late for that, my physical
wounds may be healed, the scars
like little dollops of silver, however
that biter should never have been
allowed to stay back then

and failing an admission to me now
of their culpability back then
a simple acknowledgment
that I was wounded could go
a long way toward healing
the deeper bites

yet this will only come to pass
when life on this planet ceases
and I'm stuck here now watching
pride and denial dance with dogs
I can never trust

maybe I'd do better to put my neck
between a raw recruit's glaring teeth
and let it snap away

ASHES, ASHES (photo art) & WHAT'S THE POINT (free verse dream poem) by Roswila

WHAT'S THE POINT

annoyance at him, masking a deeper
disappointment, flits across her drawn face

yes, I think, he still doesn't get it,
doesn't even really make an effort
to see the point underpinning
everyone of these newly published
two and three word haiku

but does she, or even I, "get it" either?

how many moments have already
died on the vine, their passing
not even noted as I judge her judge him
