AVALANCHE! (photomorph) & ON THE SURFACE (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila
ON THE SURFACE
... and, so, she says to me,
envy informing her astonishment
that I could have anything
to complain about:
"But you appear so happy
with the choices you've made!"
I respond carefully,
as if crossing thin ice,
fearing a dunk
into unwanted intimacy:
"Yes, but there are choices
and then there are choices"
What I do not say spirals
briefly in my heart,
like the surface of deep snow
disturbed by a sudden wind:
"Had the price for being with him
not been too high, I would never
have chosen this loneliness"
[non-dream free verse poem written December 1993 with minor revisions 8-17. I've been thinking about this very old poem quite a bit recently. And finally went to the trouble of ferreting out what I recalled was the only copy I had. I remember a female acquaintance saying just what is quoted at the beginning. I don't recall how I responded except that I tried to make it clear that, in my opinion, being OK with difficult choices doesn't necessarily make one happy. That scenario about a man at the end was made up at the time to make my point within the poem. What's eerie is that many years later, it did happen. This is something I find sometimes with my oldest poems: my current life reveals them to have been, in some way, like self-fulfilling prophecies. Photomorph "Avalanche!" (8-15-17 003v3p) by Roswila]
There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.
