THAT FERAL LOOK

“yeah,” I repeat, “for someone who’s been ‘on
report’ more than anyone, ever, it’s surprising
…no, stunning…that you’ve not been ‘invited’
to move out or at the very least been called
unceremoniously on the carpet numerous times
…oh, you say, you don’t understand why
anyone would report you to begin with? well,
that ignorance points to a probable explanation
for all those reports (if not for their lack of impact
on management): you don’t know diddly squat
about human interactions … not that I’m setting
myself up as someone who knows all that much
myself, but I do know there are times to speak up,
to take a firm, unyielding, even aggressive stand,
and times to shut up, cut one’s losses, and run
like hell … just as now, that look on your face
is decidedly feral: I’m outta here!”


[monologue based on a dream of 12-3-19. I’ll leave it unexplained. Suffice it to say, in the actual dream I was the person “on report.” And in order to express what I needed to from this dream, I changed points of view in the above writing, but not the dream content or trajectory.
