A NIGHT AT THE OFFICE

I

a much younger guy
shows his disabled old boss how
to stand up and walk
the old man resents this help
even from a disabled person

manipulated
into standing and walking
the old guy goes wild –
he leaps and jumps around
in an hysterical way

hitting an office wall
stops his vengeful frenzy –
that old expression
comes immediately to mind
“God protects fools and children”



II

an old CEO
is suspected of cheating,
of doing something
dishonest after hours
when he’s alone at his desk

I defend him
against these rumors as we
have no evidence:
maybe it’s personal work
or to help his secretary



III

a young dark haired boy’s
deep research is at a level
way beyond his years
the announcement comes at last
to gather for the results

office tensions rise
we’re told the boy’s research
upsets accepted
thought on survival rates after
a sweeping nuclear attack

it would be zero,
not five percent, not three,
but a flat zero
a path that leads to the end
nothing can grow from nothing

JUST BECAUSE

why, just because they’ve
made me Queen, do they insist I
dress so formally?
well, since it’s a job loaded with
“shoulds” I’ll have to go along

the big white poofy-
skirted ball gown itches, though,
and I’m afraid to
move my head and mess the bubble
hair style they’ve sprayed stiff

the only thing they’ve
plastered me with that I like?
these lavender studs,
small gem stones that glitter
on my nearly hidden ear lobes

there’s always something
to be grateful for, I suppose –
even when giving in

THE RESCUE (photo) & SOMETHING NIBBLES (dreamku series) by Roswila

SOMETHING NIBBLES

something nibbles and
scratches at my butt as I
sit on the toilet
what!! two baby dachshunds dark
against the white porcelain

I lift them right out
wondering how they got there
a third one, so pale
as to be translucent,
curls right around my wrist

then they’re no longer
in this changing dream picture
maybe they were birthed
by that pregnant dream dachshund
of so many decades ago

the dream goes on its obscure way
dropping no further attention grabbers


[three tanka topped by a two-liner on a dream of 4-1-13. I did think of that "pregnant dream dachshund" during the dream, and did actually have such a dream back in my late teens. Well, I've heard it said that the senior years are like a second adolescence in some ways. And for me this has proven, unfortunately, to be true. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
