ALWAYS WAITING FOR GODOT*

... so here I am again, waiting for Godot,
and goodness (and even my darkness) knows
it's never been figured out for sure who that long
awaited figure is: though I have to admit I have
always been certain Godot is a man, maybe
because I'm always looking for a special male
to appear (even this late in my life); sometimes
sitting all too tight with a woman friend by
my side, as we sigh and laugh and occasionally
cry over the hopelessness of any male
of our species coming down that long dusty
road toward either of us; but today I wait
alone (as is most often the case) and for once
it's not all that lonely or sad to do so; folk
who pass by wave and some even pause to chat
a bit before moving on past the shade cast
by this beautiful old willow I sit under; but still
like Godot, no special man arriving at last,
to clear up the mystery at the heart
of the plot: will he ever appear?
