EIGHT

she sees the postage amount for the carton she’s mailing
in the upper right corner, scribbled in pencil; ok, good,
getting it weighed and then going online to find out the
postage amount would be one more hassle as this
carton’s heavy and big and hard for her to handle
given her arthritis;

then it’s mailed and she sighs with relief … uh-OH!
that wasn’t much postage for a carton that size and
weight, and she thinks back to what had been penciled
in the upper right of its addressed face: yikes!
it must have been 8 pounds, not the 8 ounces of postage
she put on the carton for mailing;

oy! now what to do, what to do? do they return
large cartons for postage due like they used to
do with letters? will they instead bill her? or worse yet,
bill the addressee? and how much more is due anyway?
her budget’s awfully tight as is, proverbial penny-
pinching counts (pitifully) for a lot these days …

and she finds her upset mind tipping to mulling over
the significance of the number 8 itself, it is after
all largely the number of the manifest, of all things
concrete and touchable;

sigh (yet again, and again) there's always more to pay
for the weight that she brings to her world


[free verse poem on a dream of 2-12-20. Interesting that I’d have this dream last night. I spent some time yesterday paying bills. ACK. My S/S money just came in yesterday and that’s when I pay all the rest of my bills. Good-bye S/S! Now I figure out how to make it through to when my little pension check comes in at the end of the month. Can’t you just hear those pennies squealing? BTW, I hasten to add things have actually improved (e.g., I’ve managed to pay off one credit card altogether, and am getting better and better at refusing to spend on anything not totally needed … and I don’t really need a whole lot).
