QUESTIONS AT A TIME OF HUGE CHANGE

one after the other,
humans all, we change, we mellow;
we stand facing life
wearing identical smiles and practiced
postures, in a pale, balanced stack

then comes the last life
to mellow out, to become like
everybody else
and it’s not even human; it’s the sole survivor
of its kind, of any non-human kind

four-legged and furry, and, at least to my eye,
radiating a liveliness that will be lost,

irretrievable, when it’s morphed into human
form: can our bland, neatly stacked humanity

survive without deep difference? without
the edge of the unknown spurring us on?

do we really want to take the only
wild card out of the deck?
