REFLECTING

that man I can’t stand
in waking life who pesters me with
phony flirtation
leaving me feeling heavily slimed,
follows me into a realistic dream

OK, I can’t control him in waking life
but you’d think I’d not have invited him here

to appear in this theater of my mind, even if
all players here are subject to transformation

to being morphed by the weight of the message
they carry, like mutable camels or mules,

since (of course) he’s the same obnoxious guy as ever:
so, is he a straight-out warning to my waking self

or worse, a living mirror making an end run
around denial to reflect my own deepest shadow
