UNREMARKABLE
(for a poet friend)

"An unremarkable rock," she says,
"this is my offering" and places it gently
in my open palm

And in truth I see no unusual shape,
no glitter, no seductive smoothness,
no wishing ring going 'round it

Just an ordinary rock
bearing the history of a land
fused in its heart
