ON APPLE PLUCKING

from a crowded bowl
of plain red apples
she chooses a stand out globe
whose shiny red skin radiates,
dotted with many tiny yellow suns

a vision/memory rises of a grove
of apple trees in New York City's
Central Park that bore fruit
with sun-patterned skin,
globes just as quirky and as pleasing
to her eye, though she never made
the stretch back then to stand on tip toe
to relieve an over laden bough
by plucking one

the large apple she holds today
with the brilliant suns all over
its fleshy sides, sits invitingly
in the palm of her hand
as if having made the long trip
from way back there and then,
to here and now, just for her
to finally grasp and enjoy,
in all its firm,
sensuous heft


[free verse poem on a dream of 8-14-17. This was an ever so vaguely lucid dream (knowing one is dreaming, as one is dreaming) when that "vision/memory" entered. I was quite aware there has never been such a grove of trees in Central Park (I lived in New York City up until 9-1/2 years ago when I moved here, to CA).
