BEYOND THE FENCE (photo) & COOPED UP (non-dream free verse poem) by Roswila
COOPED UP
for once it's a happy bit of memory; it's doorway,
spontaneous recall of what would be a 65 year old
photo had it survived the turbulent trip into now:
a small, square black and white picture with
rippled white borders, its dark shadows long
faded into pale sepia; one first notices (at least I
remember I always did) the 8 year old girl (me)
looking up at the camera and grinning widely,
another smaller girl to her right grinning also;
then one notices these two small suns are seated
in a little chicken coop (the chicken wire around
it's ramshackle sides being a good clue) and they're
craning they're heads back and up through
the door-roof at the photographer as if just found
out; to be honest I don't know what I felt that day
but it's a lovely fantasy to spin the memory
of this photo's two dimensions and say that,
harbored by that lopsided chicken coop,
my friend and I were having a very happy
time of it hatching trouble

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.
