EMBELLISHING THE VOID (photomorph) & BETTER THAN (free verse dream poem) by Roswila
BETTER THAN
she once cried out in a poem to have her father
sing to her, sing to her, sing to her of being
loving father and child; maybe that yearning
for even the fleeting comfort that could be
found in the generational center to our hollow
family heart -- the act of singing -- maybe
this is why when pain totally takes over her life
she finds herself singing in her dreams, night after
night, filling the abyss where, at least as the stories
go, love should reside (but never has); tonight,
it’s a sad old country western song that slips
more readily off her imagined tongue than it ever
could in waking life (would that tune, harmonies,
and lyrics could come to her waking memory,
and her vocal chords, as accurately and artistically
as they do her sleeping recall); tonight, it’s an old
country western song she’s always liked
but rarely thinks to listen to
…"the only thing different
the only thing new
I've got your picture
she's got you…”
well, she murmurs in her dream,
(somewhat sardonically)
I have always had to settle
for small comforts and I suppose
they’re better than unremitting
emptiness

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.
