NIGHTSCAPADE (photomorph) & DANCING HALOS (dream & memory based poem) by Roswila

DANCING HALOS

even as she sings, she notes the painful
irony: “I could have danced all night …”
she can’t even recall the last time she truly
danced, not just bobbed and weaved to the beat,
by herself, clinging to her trusty, tall walking
stick, in the middle of a crowded Halloween
party; “… and still have begged for more…”
yep, some part of her is always begging, she
thinks, as she wakes and recalls having sung
this song, and suffers bitter-sweet memories
of doing just that: dancing all night, spinning
out to music at Barefoot Boogie, that large dance
studio she and her fellow poets had to climb five
flights of loft stairs each Saturday night to rock in,
sweaty and literally barefoot; then there was her
delightful winding down walk to the subway to go
home (unassisted by any “mobility device,” imagine
that!), past all the artists lining the Greenwich Village
sidewalks and selling their work, as basketball players
jumped and scrambled behind the high chain link
fence of the corner park, the air suffused with the
heady aroma of an endless mix of incenses rising
to dissipate in the electric light halos; sigh, no
more halos and no more dancing all night, not in
many, many years, and the memories of them,
no more substantial than the dusting of a
wild variety of long faded incense aromas

[mix of dream singing of 11-27-19, and subsequent memories it called up on waking. The song “I Could Have Danced All Night” is from My Fair Lady and one I pretty much can sing from conscious memory. (But it sounded a hell of a lot better in this little dream, for sure.) Greenwich Village is that famous area of lower westside Manhattan, New York City, known for its artists and musicians and writers, from the 60’s forward. (“Bohemian” folk was the expression often used.) I’m a former NYC denizen and often found myself in Greenwich Village from my teen years, well into my late 50’s, I’d say. (I’ve been here in CA only 12 years. And in case you’re not a regular reader of this blog, I am 75 and mobility challenged.) BTW, this dream song continues the recent trend of singing in my dreams. PLEASE NOTE: in most browsers you can click on the above image for a larger version. Also, the photo accompanying a post is not necessarily meant to illustrate it, but to reflect some small, even slant or contrasting aspect of the verse, similar to Japanese haiga (illustrated haiku).

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

until next time, keep dreaming,
