WATCH YOUR STEP (photomorph) & TAKING STEPS (dream) by Roswila

TAKING STEPS

“yes,” she says
to herself under her breath,
“I think I know
where I can get what it is
I want…” and she starts
the long dark climb
up the stairs to the apartment;
she fingers
the door key in her pocket expectantly
but is frustrated to find that both doors
on the shadowy stair landing
have multiple locks,
along with other small
obstructive devices taped
across them;
if it were
a better lit scene and she weren’t
on an almost desperate hunt
for something
in that apartment, she might
take a photo
as it’s like an artsy, latter day collage;
but
she’s upset and hot on the trail
of what she wants, so she
sets about figuring a way
through the doorway
on the right;
“Maybe it’s some sort of ruse,”
she thinks, “and my key will
fit every one of these locks…”
but how can she even see
in this darkness
to fit a key in one,
much less many small locks?
she realizes
the lack of lighting is probably deliberate,
part of how entrance
is being barred,
and goes about examining the other devices,
disguised as letter page-sized windows,
that have been taped up,
mostly on the door
to the left; she’s able to move
a few from the left-hand,
worn wood door to the shiny
dark wood door on the right,
but recognizes
rapidly this will have no effect on her being
locked out; this tape and paper tack is only
giving her something to do
as she stands here,
refusing to give up on her quest;
what an irony,
as she’s not even sure that what she wants
is in that apartment,
but she’d rather keep trying to get in
after this lengthy,
arduous climb, than turn tail
and clamber
all
the
way
down
in
dark
defeat

[dream of 4-24-19. Lots in this dream (and more I’ve yet to explore). To start, I incubated a dream last night before sleep with the repeated question: How can I find my way home when I’m lost like this?” Not the response I might have wished for. I.e., I’m locked out, in no uncertain terms. However, I have a lot more thinking to do on this jam-packed dream. Also, for many years (starting before I even moved here to CA 11 years ago) I’ve had a repeating dream theme of climbing stairs along which I’d always find a very difficult patch to get past, but I would. Where I was climbing to was rarely even part of the dream. And last, but certainly not least or even a final “last,” I have an extremely strong association to these stairs and landing to the apartment/building in lived in for 23 years in Elmhurst, NYC before I moved here. PLEASE NOTE: in most browsers you can click on the above image for a larger version. Also, the photo accompanying a post is not necessarily meant to illustrate it, but to reflect some small, even slant aspect of the verse, similar to Japanese haiga (illustrated haiku).

There are many other sorts of posts on this blog. I indicate which are about or influenced by dreams. Some non dream focused posts are book reviews, "regular" poems (some by other writers), scifaiku, writing exercises, Tarot haiku, photos, haiga, and so on. However, most of those are in much older posts. There's a listing by month going back to early 2006, at the end of the sidebar.

until next time, keep dreaming,
